  • Bike suggestion - Replacement for my Rx135 5Speed

    Hi,

I need to buy new motorcycle. Recently someone stole my Rx 135, 5 speed which i loved the most.

What bike will you guys suggest for a biker, had Rx for about 17 years and never owned anything else?

    Some details...

I am 168 cm height, 62kg weight. Not a speed rider. I always go below 100kmph. I had a back pain problem, somewhat sorted out but not fully gone. Usually will ride about 20kms in city. Very much passionate to go for touring with pillion rider(wifey). Ofcourse relaxed ride.

    My expectation....

    Maintenance free bike (like Rx)
    Decent mileage
Comfortable sitting position for a rider and pillion.
kind of unique bike like Rx and RE ( little attention grabbing )

Not much interested with regular 100cc commuter bikes..Please suggest around 1L and 2L both price range. So far I have some bikes in my mind. I am not sure these come under my expectation though. Thought of Rx again. Need atleast 70k for a decent bike. For that I can go for a new bike with nice spec.

List of the bikes in my mind...

    Yamaha FZ25 / FZ FI
    Apache RTR 200 Race edition,
    Dominar,
    RE classic,
    Himalayan,
    Jawa 42

Somehow Avenger/Intruder are not in my list. I can wait 2,3 months for any new bike launch.

    Thanks in advance.

I would suggest you to visit the showrooms of the shortlisted bikes and see what ticks your heart rather than ask for ideas - more confusion . But anyway since i have a RX135 5 speed my suggestion is if you plan to keep it long term go for a proven Japanese machine ,they age well and generally reliable. If retro looks are what you like Jawa is a good option though longevity is a question mark along with servicing not to mention the waiting list

What about Jawa or Jawa 42. Both have that retro charm and will get you the looks.

Hello sir.... You must definitely consider the Apache 160 4v. It will tick most of your boxes if not all. It has a surprisingly smooth engine and adequate power. Being a 160cc, it will offer a decent mileage of at least 40-45 kmpl. It is also suited for long rides. It is not heavy like the REs. Having a single piece seat, it must be comfortable for the pillion too. Being a TVS, it is low on the cost of spares and maintainance compared to the Japs. Take a test ride to make sure the riding posture suits you as you've mentioned back pain problem.

Edit: If you don't mind, wait for the ABS model. It must be available before April 2019.

P.S. I took a look at your website. It is really nice.

The closest in terms of raw performance will be Apache 180(I'm not too fond of Apache 200) and R15V3.0. Although none of these can replicate the legend, it can come closest.

Other options are FZ twins, Duke 250.

And the upcoming MT-15 should also be a good option!
A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.

Initially i thought of that...But now, it takes more time to get one. And the pillion seat is so small i guess. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I am not that aggressive rider to choose Duke 250. And due to my back pain, the riding posture of R15 may not be suitable for me i think. But I will look for Apache and FZ. Thanks

Since you mentioned you can wait, Yamaha MT15 is also being launched. It has the heart of R15 and it'd have the comfort too. Be sure to give it a TR.

Also, I saw that you mentioned you don't go above 100 kmph. I'd suggest an old gold bike with a smooth and durable engine. Also, it is the most comfortable ride in the segment. I'm referring to Honda Unicorn 150. I know it's an unexpected recommendation. But it is a worthy one if you want a simple reliable 150cc bike.

                            Greetings!

Dominar would be a great value for money product, plenty of power, latest tech, Bajaj service network availability and the cruiser of modern age. I remember you mentioned you don't want an Avenger but not only the Avenger has a class of its own it's like the most comfortable motorcycle available in this range. I'm personally not a fan of RE(Himalayan has a starting coil issue) and I recently cancelled my Jawa42. Well it's gonna be a while before they can set up a proper network to risk touring. I got a Pulsar RS 200 but you clearly mentioned that it isn't your type. FZ? I used to own a 2008 FZ-S and I did test drive the FZ25 but it did not excite me at all. While the motorcycle itself is more towards practicality and not so much on a style statement(too common now) it still has some serious quality issues which made me deviate from the product and get my third Pulsar. I'm not trying to sound biased but Bajaj is actually pulling out some good products. Another off option is a Honda CBR 250 R, a used one would cost somewhere between 70k to 1 lakh and the engine really lasts very long, there's people who have used the first edition for over 94k KM's.

                            Good luck and happy riding!

Ya.. I still have my love towards Dominar. I need to TD. BTW what is the Himalayan has a starting coil issue? Does it not get resolved in 2018/19 models?
                              Thank you very much.
