  • Bike for around 2 lakhs with peculiar preferences

    Hi everyone,

I'm planning to buy a bike under 2 lakh.
This would be my third bike, the earlier ones being Rx100 and FZ-S. I bought FZ-S as per the suggestions I got in this forum and really enjoyed my days with it. Done nearly 45k kms on fz-s and thanks to xbhp again for helping me back then.
Now that it went to my little brother, I'm planning to buy a new one. Below are my preferences/expectations:

    1. Budget under Rs. 2 lakh and can go till 2.3 max.
    2. My age is 35, height is 5.3 and weight is 75kg
    4. Primarily needed for touring at around 350 - 400 kms per day.
    5. Pillion comfort is also very important.
    6. Cruising speed of atleast 90 kph is preferable as I'm looking for an upgrade to my fz-s, anything below that would not look like an upgrade at all.

My only preference was Interceptor at first, but my family would kill me if i spend that much on a bike.

Below are ones I shortlisted. Feel free to recommend other bikes as well.

    1. Bajaj Dominar - It was comfy to ride and felt good but I'm always skeptical about Bajaj service and spares.
    2. Thunderbird 350x - this is what my family is pushing for, I too felt very good but my uncle said it won't do speeds above 80kph without punishing with too much vibrations.
    3. Honda Cbr 250r - had to really bend down to reach, i feel it's not for my age or something.
    4. Classic 350 signals - bit tall for me and feels heavy. I rode my cousins classic 350 for a month and still didn't feel confident.
    5. Jawa - i have to wait a year to get this.

Not really interested in Apaches or Avenger or UM.

Cbr 250 would be the best choice for your needs, second option would be dominar. Rest are not that great of an option imo. The 350's don't have good cruising speed and have a lot of vibes.

          1. Bajaj Dominar - It was comfy to ride and felt good but I'm always skeptical about Bajaj service and spares.
Dominar is a well tested bike but mind you it doesn't have the pillion comfort that you desire. It can cruise at 110-120 all day long without any issues.

          2. Thunderbird 350x - this is what my family is pushing for, I too felt very good but my uncle said it won't do speeds above 80kph without punishing with too much vibrations.
Thunderbird although being very old is not updated much and it being a RE it has crazy vibrations and although it is supposed to be a tourer it can't do speeds of 100kmph without straining the engine

          3. Honda Cbr 250r - had to really bend down to reach, i feel it's not for my age or something.
This I feel is the best bike of the lot although not been updated since it was launched back in 2011. Apart from the outdated looking electronics it's got everything you could ask for. You can cruise comfortably at 120-140 all day. Yes it is a bit committed than the nakeds like the Dominar but it's definitely not uncomfortable like the R15 on longer rides. It grows on you.

          4. Classic 350 signals - bit tall for me and feels heavy. I rode my cousins classic 350 for a month and still didn't feel confident.
Same as the Thunderbird. Won't recommend a RE (exception being the 650 twins)

          5. Jawa - i have to wait a year to get this.
          Won't comment on this

you should consider the Apache 200 4V, it's a brilliant machine albeit it's minor niggles

This was my first choice, which suited my needs and also I wanted to have a Honda. However, once i sat, it's like I have to bend a lot to reach handlebars. I'm afraid of getting a backache with this type of seating.

Most showrooms have just one show piece of it and test ride wasn't available in most Hyderabad showrooms. I have to try more stores may be.

I agree about TB's vibes. I've done 2 test rides and still wasn't satisfied except for handling and looks. Somehow people buy royal enfields anyway.

I may be suggesting something different but a Pulsar 220 makes sense.
It has semi fairing for protection against wind blast at speeds above 80, beautiful projector headlights, tubeless tyres, disc brakes at both ends and now comes with ABS too. It is dirt cheap to maintain a 220 and the BS4 versions are smooth.

I too hear great things abt Dominar. I was never a fan of Bajaj, be it their worst service or spares availability or constantly changing models. May be it improved or got worse now. Somehow Bajaj wants more than Rs.2 lakh for a bike with their brand value. If it was Yamaha or Honda, I'd happily invest that much.
Besides, i didn't get to test ride this heavy bike, may be stocks are over bcz of 2019 model coming up.

I have used classic 350 for many days. Do u say thunderbird 350x is worse than this or has same vibes and performance?

I agree. This was the same bike I considered buying back 7 years ago and chose fzs. It's awkward abt gng back again for same model, like going back in time :P.
As i said, I've to bend a lot to reach handle bars. If this wasn't the case, i would have already bought this and posted my experience. ( Didn't test ride this due to store availability)

CBR isn't selling in amazing numbers that it used to. It is simply overpriced for what it offers. Just slapping a Honda logo and asking 2.3L isn't going to justify. CB300R is going to come soon so this may kill CBR 250R afterall.

As for the case of Dominar, Bajaj has improved a lot and spare parts are cheap and easy to get.
You can wait for 2019 Dominar or wait for Yamaha to launch ABS equipped FZ25. It will feel similar but fast compared to FZ-S.
If you were happy with Yamaha spares and servicing cost, FZ25 is the one you should think about.
                  Regards,

Re: Bike for around 2 lakhs with peculiar preferences

As a current gen D400 owner most of the things are solidly built and it has never ever troubled me in my one and half years of ownership. Yes the service centres and showroom response to this premium product is still terrible but I can vouch for the quality of the bike and if all those rumours about upcoming dominar is true it's gonna be one hell of a VFM machine. Yes it is a little heavy as I came from HH glamour to this monster but after time you understand to adjust to the weight.

My suggestions, suggest you to pick bikes that have 780mm-800mm seat height only. Anything higher will only lead tip-toeing.
                      1. Bajaj Dominar - I feel it'll be on taller side with my own personal experience, heavy for city use and manoeuvring the city. It is same as what you quoted "bit tall for me and feels heavy.", you'll feel the same here with Dominar.
Again you have to take the call if you are ok to managing the bike. Apart from that aspect it's really good bike.
                      2. Thunderbird350x/Classic 350 - Himalayan will make better alternative than both TB350 and Classic 350, mainly Himalayan for it's highway performance and pillion comfort, TB350 lacks pillion comfort, C350 is heavy.
                      3. Jawa, Jawa 42, Perak - Yes, if you can wait for a year then get this bike.

                      Other bikes;
                      4. FZ25 ABS - Perfect with all aspects and meets all of your requirements, with everything. And you already own a Yamaha which you are happy with the whole package, service, quality, reliability, spare parts price. So you'll be right at home from Day 1 feeling happy.
