  • Looking for a tourer under 2.5 lacs on road

    Hi All,
Its really nice to see the biking fraternity sharing their knowledge and experience to help each other.
I have read through many articles, threads, ownership reviews so much so that I kind of remember the names of the members (VJ has been the highest contributor sharing his views).

Based on the above homework and couple of test rides that I did, I have shortlisted the below bikes.
However, I would like to know more about the after sale experience, maintenance and ride comfort.

I currently own a 2010 TVS RTR 180 which has been ridden for 23.5k kms and mostly for small errands and to the gym. The only long ride experience I have is doing 150kms and the vibration was so much that my palm became numb.

Requirement: A sufficiently powered machine capable of doing 500kms with utmost comfort for the rider and the pillion. I am planning to have the saddlebags and top box. I am from coorg and my punto struggles in monsoon to climb from the main road to my house and hence the bike should be able to climb(offroading?)
    I am 5’11 and 74kgs.

    Shortlisted Bikes:
Himalayan: Test ridden and found it to be extremely comfortable in terms of riding stance and pillion seat. Since bs6 deadline just around the corner, would it be wise to pick a bs4 one now.

CBR250r: Test ridden and found it to be fairly comfortable(but himalayan still comes on top). The engine refinement and gear shift was shockingly smooth. But my wife complained about pillion discomfort and she kept falling on me whenever i applied brake.

Dominar/Any other: Any other suggestion based on my requirement and preference?

Also, I am planning to ride along with my friend who owns an interceptor and hence I mentioned that I need a sufficiently powered machine which can catch up with him doing 100-120 with less stress on the engine.

You can have a look at the Mahindra Mojo and the KTM Duke 250.

Brother the bike is right infront of your eyes "Dominar 2019".. Get a set of dual sport tyres from timsun india. And you are ready to roll whether its rains or snow.

Thanks Umang and Dlonerider for your inputs.

Hasn’t the Mojo been discontinued. If not, their sales are dwindling down and are close to single digit numbers from what I read recently. That could be a problem when it comes spares, after sale support etc.
Hows the Duke 250 for pillion comfort and saddle bags?

Regarding the Dominar, there is a lot of positive reviews on this machine and it comes on top as a VFM product. Will the chassis take the long term abuse as comfortably as a himalayan? Can it outlive a himalayan?

Both the Dominar and Himalayan are proven products.

For the Himalayan you can get some idea about it's reliability etc from here -

I've ridden 190.000 kilometers solo around the world and still counting! My name is Noraly, I'm Dutch and passionate about motorcycles, traveling and adventuring. In 2018, I quit my job, sold my belongings and have been traveling the world fulltime by motorcycle since then. Over 80 countries later, I am currently riding east. My motorcycle is a 1987 Yamaha Tenere, completely restored and with some amazing modifications - my motorcycle and I are the same age! I share my adventures here on YouTube every Wednesday and Sunday! Welcome to the channel and I hope you'll enjoy the ride! LET'S GO! For the Dominar check out the Polar Odyssey series.

Both of them should serve you well, I think Ultimately the decision should come down to the maintenance costs and intervals for both the bikes and also the spare parts availability.

              Thanks Umang again.

I am following basanti already and her 10k kms review was pretty helpful.
I will do a test ride of dominar soon.

                  Hey, congrats bro.

I had similar requirements just like you. I'm also looking for sub 2.5L tourer with comfortable riding position and good pillion comfort. My shortlisted bikes are Dominar & Himalayan, though didn't test ride any. I also own 2013 Apache 180 ridden about 32k Kms till date.

Could you please give the reasons that made you choose Himalayan among others?

                    Hi Swadeshi,

                    I own a RTR 180 as well.
The reason I chose Himalayan over Dominar was
                    - Himalayan’s riding comfort was good and got excellent feedback from my pillion as well(thats more important )
                    - Dominar felt a but plasticky to my liking and it looks a slightly beefier version of pulsar to me. When we plonk so much money, we need some exclusivity as well in terms of looks.
                    - I needed something for long term and Royal Enfield has a history. Dominar may be in a different league compared to the pulsars but brand perception matters a lot if you ever choose to sell your bike.
                    - Himalayan looked very practical for the purpose it was built. There were no fancy gizmos and electricals. The ease of getting the bike fixed when you are stranded is far more compared to Dominar.
Its just my opinion and a greater influence on my decision was my wife. She felt comfortable on Himalayan

These points are equally important to me since my pillion would be my wife as well.

Anyway I'm planning to go for 100km rides by renting both of these bikes which would help us to decide on the purchase.
