  • Confused soul looking for an Upgrade.!

    Hello Bikers.!

I am in a dilemma regarding the next bike. Well I would like to throw some light on my history and thought process so that the fellow members can advise me in a better way.!

    History:

Born in a middle class family. Father used to ride a Kinetic Honda and then came Honda Activa. Learnt riding a two wheeler on these and eventually learnt riding a bike borrowing from a friend. Then came 2010, I was smitten with Hero Honda Karizma 225. Father denied owing to lack of Vitamin M. Instead he got me a brand new Honda Unicorn (I still respect his decision as Unicorn itself was a stretch to him way back then). I was happy that I had a bike to ride to college. Covered about 22000 in 2 years with few trips of 100 km, 200 km way back in 2010 - 2012. Other than that it was pure commuting in the city. Then Joined Armed Forces in 2012. Had bike for a brief period on and off from 2012 to 2014. Bought a preworshipped Tata Safari in 2014 and it was the main vehicle till todate. Then the riding was mostly during leave period when I was in Hyderabad twice a year.

Fast forward to Jan 2018 and I got the bike to Chennai where I ride it to office almost 3-4 days a week. The bike presently covered 32000 kms on odo and the itch to ride a bigger bikes started after reading some blogs and watching videos on Youtube.

    Present:

The Unicorn has never ditched me ever in the past 09 years and has been a trouble free experience. The saying " Fill it, Shut it, ride it" suits perfectly. About 03 months back, my wife and I did a 80 km ride (Both ways) to MMRT and found the following issues:-

    1. Engine strain: The engine strains past 60-70 kmph and I can feel the vibrations on the bar, pedal and tank. Difficult to cruise on higher speeds.
    2. High speed dynamics: The bike does not feel planted beyond 60 kmph. This is mainly due to the tyres (stock MRF) and are due for change. (Yes its way beyond their life and please do not chase me for this. I was about to change them but somehow wanted to upgrade and then kept postponing it).
    3. Wind Blast: There is no wind protection whatsoever. Feels like I am flying after 60 kmph.
    4. Inadequate braking: No ABS and the old tyres are a sore thumb.

Some of the above issues would be taken care off to some extent by changing the tyres but I really want to upgrade. This October marks 10 years of Unicorn and its time to move up the ladder in both number of cylinders as well as the capabilities of the bike. So the requirements are as follows:-

    1. Preworshipped vehicle. Budget: 5L max (The lower the better).
    2. Minimum 2 cylinder engine (The higher the better).
    3. ABS.
    4. Comfortable for long distance travel. So mainly looking for a vehicle inclined to touring and not just track specific. I agree I am now close to a track here in Chennai but that would not be the case in the near future. So I really do not want to invest in a track inclined vehicle.
    5. Touring specific vehicle with decent rear seat comfort. Mainly would be used for solo trips but incase my better half wants to join weekend rides etc then why not!
    6. No offroading requirements. Mainly highway touring and may be two to three trips to Spiti, Leh, Bhutan etc.
    7. Good reliability.
    8. Decent service network owing to my job. I would be posted to various smaller towns which most of the members would never heard off. Trust me I am not joking and it will surely take you some time to locate them on the map. Its just plain luck that I am in a metropolitan city now.
    9. Longer periods between service intervals. Cannot run around service centres every 4 months as an example.
    10. Good wind protection.
    11. Lower vibrations and smoother engines.
    12. Soft luggage carrying capacity mainly being tail bag, saddle bags. I am not ready to invest in hard luggage solutions like panniers right away.
    13. I am not a sucker for digital consoles and tech stuff. Frankly I like the conventional analog engine RPM indicator with the digital layout for others like Yamaha R3 and Ninja 650.
    14. Fairing. Oh yeah..! Always had a fantasy for faired bikes. But faired bikes with long distance comfort+pillion comfort do not go hand in hand! So semi faired bikes are still okay.
    15. Open to Adventure touring bikes. It was a mistake on my part to take a test ride of Kawa Versys and Benelli Trk 502. I seriously loved them for the comfort and upright stance. They just spoilt my decision making skills and I am completely confused now. Versys is way out of my budget and Benelli is a not a established player as of now owing to the divorce with DSK. Also the service intervals are too short.

So these are some of the requirements.

I am still considering the Yamaha R3 (Budget friendly), Kawa Ninja 650 (issued with lower ground clearance hold me back), Versys in case i get a cheaper option, CBR 650F again very low in the used bike market and the ABS version is generally expensive. The heart lusts for Triumph Tiger but the used ones are completely out of budget.

So err what should I do?

Well, with your budget of 5 L, you can get a new Yamaha R3 ABS and invest in riding gear and luggage bags. You can even find a used Yamaha R3 ABS I suppose. The ABS version has been out for over an year now. I think you are already inclined towards the R3 and narrowed it down. And you have fantasies about faired bikes .

R3 meets all your requirements that you have mentioned above except--
        1. Pillon seat is just a namesake seat
        2. Not made for any kind sort off-roading

Service network of Yamaha is decent but not all the centers handle R3. Only a handful. However, the bike is easy to work on by yourself like engine oil change, chain clean, lubing, tightening etc. Service is way cheaper than Benelli or Kawasaki. 40-50% less actually.

PS - I had the TNT300 earlier and now own the R3.

The Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 is coming to mind.

          - In budget.
          - Twin cylinder.
          - Buzz free.
          - Made in India.
          - Simple air cooled engine.
          - Is proving it's reliability.
          - Sounds beautiful.
          - Pillion leg angle is an issue.
          - Pillion seat comfort seems acceptable.
          - ABS
          - Can easily do long distance touring.
          - Enfield has decent network, easy service

          Please test ride and see.

          You won't be disappointed.

Interceptor owners please correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Confused soul looking for an Upgrade.!

I can imagine your urge for upgrading after riding the same bike for almost 10 years.
However the biggest issue that you will face is with spares availability in small towns. You can never let any mechanic touch your bike for service in such towns.
Go for a big bike only if you know how to perform the basic servicing tasks like, oil change, oil filter change, air filter cleaning and replacement etc. And you would need to buy certain basic tools to perform these tasks.

If you feel that you would be comfortable doing such tasks, then go ahead and buy.
As for the bikes, I have used both N650 and R3 and have toured on both. Pillion comfort would be better in N650 and its better suited for touring. Handling in back to back city traffic, R3 wins. From a spares stand point, R3 spares cost way less that N650. Availability will be a challenge for both.
I believe Chennai should have bike rental service. See if you can lay your hands on both the R3 and N650 from rentals and go for a long ride.
            This will help you decide.

Maybe you have decided your bike till now. If not, then my humble advice is please dont go for any kawasaki, yamaha, benelli, truimph, hd etc. Service will be a great issue in small towns. I am also in service and posted in a small town. You may laugh now, but Bajaj asc guys didnt have any clue that how abs works in my Avenger 2019...even after 6 months of its production..[emoji1][emoji28]..now you can imagine how will the case be with those very expensive machines. Or you will have to rush to metro cities every now and then which is quite troublesome thing.

I agree entirely. 9 months and about 4500 kms into ownership, I am absolutely in love with the vehicle. I too upgraded from an old 150cc mill.

Do test ride it, preferably with your wife as pillion, as i feel the seat is the weakest point of the Interceptor.

Re: Confused soul looking for an Upgrade.!

Thank you all for the valuable inputs and responding to the query. The hunt is still on. I came close to finalising an N650 but due to some reasons, had to let it go. My search is out for a Honda CBR 650F too. Yes that would be a stretch to the budget but if i find one, then I guess it would be an ultimate upgrade. In-line 4 cylinder, 650CC, sports tourer but its dead hard to find. Even a honda executive has expressed his concern of how low the sales of CBR650 are and the difficulty to find one in the used market.

Agreed Sir. I just have a hope if I can depend on the nearest city for maintenance. once in 8 months or an year of maintenance is still good. Should learn the basic maintenance so as to reduce dependency on the service centres for small issues.

Yes Dhawz29, I have test ridden few R3s (both non ABS and ABS versions). I somehow do not want to go for new ones. I feel less used good Pre worshipped bike is a better value for money proposition than a new one especially when I know I can lay my hands on a 650cc. Yes, as you rightly brought out, service is cheaper for Yamaha. Also the service intervals are longer when compared to Benelli. The search is still on.!

Hey.! Yes I have ridden the interceptor. Its buzz free for sure but the retro style looking somehow was not catching my attention. Also the seat was not comfortable for both rider and pillion. Thats the reason I did not include in the list above.

Thats nice Hellgate. Yes, the spares availability is an issue but have to live with it. I just need to minimise so this brings me to the reliability point. R3 felt a little more committed in riding posture when compared to the N650 (both ABS versions). So looking for N650s presently especially because of the power which comes into picture. 40ish bhp vs 69 bhp.! :-)

Oh.! I see. Yes, this is one of the dilemma which kept me away from bikes for the past few months and not letting me completely go ahead and buy one. But this also robs me of the precious time for enjoying these machines especially when the market is embracing batteries as the next source of power for vehicles.

My close friend picked it up too.! Yes, had a test ride with wife as pillion and she was not comfortable. She liked the Versys and TRK 502 in terms of comfort. Also as I said, I am not into Retro-Classic looking bikes.
