  • Confused between Gixxer SF 250 & Dominar! Need inputs from owners and experts.

    Hi everybody,

I wasn't planning on selling my Karizma ZMR till 2025 but got too bored and wish to upgrade. Can't decide between Gixxer SF 250 and Dominar. I know both are worlds apart but those 2 are the only choices I have made. I test rode both of them for 2-3 kms and loved them both. BTW if Gixxer sf 250 had a little bit more power (say 30 bhp) then I would have bought it without a doubt, but its power doesn't feel too much of an upgrade from my (modified 240cc) ZMR.

    My view about:
Gixxer: Fun loving handling complimented by clip-on handlebars and huge tank which is easy to hug. Easy going low end torque and exhilarating high end performance. Comfortable yet balanced suspension. Non intrusive ABS setup, sticky & wide tyres. CONS: I don't like that it is low on power and still costs around 2 lakhs on-road.

Dominar: Too much power, not exactly linear in my opinion. Pulls too abruptly upon twisting the throttle. I didn't like the seating and handlebars, I felt like I was riding first gen pulsars again! Many reviewers say that its handling is heavy but I didn't find it heavy at all because I employ COUNTER-STEERING technique for tilting & turning and hence Dominar was very easy to maneuver in traffic at speeds above 15 kmph. I have also read hundreds of weird problems on Dominar ownership thread on xbhp. Apart from these, I love all the features in Dominar, especially the ridiculously light (slipper) clutch!

In short, I want to buy the Dominar but don't wanna forego the sporty handling & seating of Gixxer.

    My question:
Is it possible that once I get accustomed to Dominar's wide handlebars, I will be able to zigzag through traffic (using counter steering) and won't miss the gixxer's handling anymore?

Also, I hate both the color options of Dominar, when will they start selling the red and silver colors again?

Hello arya... I think both these motorcycles are from a totally different class... It isn't fair comparing both of them in the first place... Yea going with wide handlebars can help to some extent... But gixxer has way more aerodynamics compared to the dominar... So my answer would be a no. I don't think you will get the gixxers handling on a dominar.

Bro there is no comparison between the bikes in terms of specs..if you want mileage then go for Suzuki, if you want torque and power go for dominar..keep in mind to purachse dominar from a good dealership

wish to upgrade? in terms of what? Power? or Features (Tubeless Tyres, LED Lights)? or for fresh Looks? or for Safety (ABS)?...
First of all, both bikes are very different as others told. And we don't know what type of rider you are/ or for what this bike would be used mostly?

If you wish to upgrade only for power, you know the answer already. My younger sibling has a first batch Dominar and my cousin has the new Dominar. Except the usd forks and improved power (except a small drop in fuel efficiency), by and large the Dominar bike is same. It might be value for money and has more power.
But it lacks Refinement, period. Handling, Gixxer SF 250 (faired one) wins hands down.(I have done long test rides).

Basically I have ridden both and I booked a Gixxer SF 250.(So I may be biased). But in longterm riding gixxer sf 250 would keep you happy interms of refinement, maintenance, comfort etc. Last but not least, Gixxer SF 250 might not be the proper upgrade in terms of power & torque for who already own a karizma.
"If you care enough for a result, you will most certainly attain it."

Is there any gixxer thread at all on xbhp? Its so hard to find any ownership of gixxer 250. There are 670 plus pages of ownership on fz25.

Re: Confused between Gixxer SF 250 & Dominar! Need inputs from owners and experts.

I am in a similar boat. I have a FZ25 that I have now used for touring extensively over the past year. I rarely use the motorcycle in the city as I have my Ather scooter that does the job wonderfully. I think the Yamaha is wonderful for touring, it has very good riding ergonomics, the engine is super refined and can maintain 90-100 speeds all day. Plus it is not as high tech as some of the super bikes so does not draw attention once you go outside the big cities. However, its flaws are very well known, it gets significantly rougher once you hit a 100 and the lack of a 6th gear makes its presence felt on long highway rides.

After my trips, I’ve come to the conclusion that a 400cc engine is probably the ideal tourer for our conditions. It has enough grunt to manage highway speeds all day with oomph left over for overtakes. Plus it would be economic enough for a longer range without stopping for frequent fills.

Unfortunately, we have so few options. I blame the Dominar and the Himalayan to a large extent, they have introduced them at a price that the other manufacturers just cannot match and even though they are superior products, most consumers will think that am I really getting the value for 2x the price and not buy. This, when even the Dominar is seeing very low sales, kills the business case for these products.

I really considered buying a Dominar but the drop in refinement from the Yamaha is so pronounced that I could not go ahead with it. So, right now, I’m holding on to my FZ25 and hoping for more options soon

If budget ain't a issue, you could wait for the Yamaha Mt 03, but again knowing Yamaha and the launches. But I feels like a very good mid level naked, can keep up with the 650s of the class . And pretty good highway speeds, should be a fair bit cheaper than the R3 which is 3.57 exshowroom. Yamaha should be smart and price it decently, atleast below the ninja300 for sure .

Yes, the MT-03 is something I had considered, but there is no news of when it is going to launch.

I think Gixxer 250 and Dominar are both good motorcycles and you won't regret buying either of them. But since they have different characteristics you will find it some more appealing than the other. Dominar requires different handling that the Gixxer and one of my friends completed Spiti tour on dominar without breaking a sweat. So if you want smooth urban bike then Gixxer would be a better choice but if you want the power and the mile munching then Dominar is good choice.

Japanese refinement is very hard to match.
If budget is not a problem, check the N300, N400 and N650/Z650 from Kawi. All models are getting huge discount to clear stock before BS6 comes in.
