  • Help in choosing a new bike

I own a Bajaj CT100 (model 2005) and it's registration needs to be renewed next year March. I am thinking of going for a new bike in exchange of CT100. My requirement is that I need a good bike with a little extra power than the CT100 but also looking for a good mileage (at least 70km/l). When I consider the mileage I am thinking about the 110cc bikes like Platina H-gear and Yamaha Saluto but I am not sure I will be satisfied with the power and stability of the bike. If I consider the 125cc bikes like Discover 125 or Saluto 125cc I do not think I will get a mileage of 70. Hence, I need your help here in choosing a bike for me which can remain as a trustworthy companion (just like my CT100) in the years to come. In next one or two months I will be buying the new bike. Any help on this will be very much appreciated. Thanks!

Mileage of 70kmpl is a very high requirement as only the 100-110cc commuters will be able to provide that. Due to their low fuel consumption, their compression ratio is very low resulting in low power delivery. Power and mileage in a bike are inversely proportional to each other.
Pulsar 125 is a good option though mileage will be no where near to 70kmpl. 55kmpl to 60kmpl (max) is would be a more realistic expectation from as 125cc engine.
Honda Shine 125 would give around 60kmpl but it wont have the same punch as Pulsar 125.
I would say get a test ride of both these bikes and see which one you prefer.

These are the ideal recommendations. Shine gives you refinement and better looks than commuters. Pulsar gives you more punch, big bike feel and its an upgrade from commuter looks.

Saluto 110 will give you the best of both - power and mileage. It's a great handler as per owner's feedback. The mileage will not be 70 - it hovers around 60-65 if handled sanely.

Looks like Honda Shine SP 125 is better (as CB shine has some chain issue as mentioned by someone). Zigwheels review says Shine SP gives approx. 62 kmpl in city and that sounds like an acceptable figure to me since I drive mostly in the city. As far power is concerned, I generally ride between 45 - 55(as I only ride in city) and I hope Shine SP will be okay for speed for that kind. Please let me know your thoughts.

Agreed. I prefer Shine SP 125 though the price seems to be a bit high i.e. 84K on road. It's mileage anywhere above 60 kmpl (in city) seems to be good.

Shine SP 125 gives almost the same mileage and I don't think there should be any shortage in power as well. And sale wise, I don't see much salutos as compared to Shine. Not sure why.

@OP - Shine has more than enough power to do 45-55 as per your need. It goes really good even to 60-65.

By the way, there seems to be different variants in Shine like CB Shine 125, Shine SP 125, CB Shine SP 125. Can anyone suggest which can i choose over in these? CB Shine costs lesser than the other two.

Thank you! As you said, looking at the difference the SP version has 5 gears and looks like the 5th gear is mainly used for cruise purpose in highways. Now, the probability of me driving in highways is almost zero and 99% I drive in city roads (which has lot of bumps and pits and dust). And the other main difference is Fuel Injector in SP 125 compared to other two versions. I have used carburetor in my old bike and replacement costed me around 2k. I am not sure about FI and its replacement. It looks like in terms of efficiency and maintenance purpose, FI is better option. I think the CB Shine seems to fit my bill very well since I am not worried about the extra features, 5th gear and FI.

New sp125 bs6 gives 16% more mileage than its bs4 version. Some youtube mileage test gave 60-65 kmpl in city and 75+ mileage in highway at 55kmph speed. It's costlier but if this bike will give sustained mileage then overall cost of riding will be lower than its bs4 versions. Only concern is FI is new in commuter segments and most of the mechanic don't know how properly about FI. So if you can wait some months you will know about user reviews and how this bike performs in real and what are the problems with this bike. If you can't wait then defiantly go for cb shine or shine sp.

Mileage part of bs6 version is interesting. Cost is also manageable. Regarding FI, are you saying the FI will be still an issue for mechanic in Honda ASC or just the local mechanic? Anyways, as you mentioned waiting for some months make more sense. My registration for old bike (ct 100) expires by April or May. I hope I can finalize something by that time.

FI will be not an issue for ASC mechanic, only issue is with some local mechanics. Although local mechanic will also learn it to repair after there will be considerable number of FI bikes on road. Honda is going to launch toned down version of sp125. It may be named as cb shine bs6. It's price may be lower than sp125. So for now waiting is better option.

I generally give service in ASC so that solves the FI issue. I think I could wait until April and see if there is any chance in bs6. As far I researched until now, Shine has great feedback in the commuter segment bikes. Keeping that in mind, I will wait for now. Thanks!

If you only stay in city and have only commute, using only 4 gears, you can go with 4 speed CB Shine. It's a simple and we'll selling old mill with good reliability and carb which is easier to maintain. This also helps in case you want to explore uncharted territory, all mechanics will be able to troubleshoot carb engines.

Fi engine wouldn't be a problem if you only commute and get servicing done at ASC. Personally, I only go with ASC for warranty. Back in 2008, I got my shine and during 2nd or third service, I wasn't satisfied with the service so I went with outside mechanics.
