  • Ninja 300 or Yamaha R3 (BSVI) - What to expect

    Dear pals,

I am looking for a twin cylinder fully faired sports motorcycle with butter smooth engine and the options on offer currently are BSIV version of Yamaha R3 and Kawasaki Ninja 300. I am confused between BSVI version of Yamaha R3 v2 and Ninja 300. How soon would they be arriving in India? What changes can we expect from both the motorcycles?

P.S.: I am not interested in any of the Benelli motorcycles.

    Thanking you in anticipation.

    Regards,
    Vineet Talashi & Rahul Bhat

First of all, there are no official timelines announced by either Yamaha or Kawasaki.

When the BS3 to BS4 transition happened in April 2017, it took Yamaha 1 year to launch the new BS4 R3 ABS version. They announced it in Feb 2018 and bikes started to be delivered by March/April 2018.

With such low volumes selling, I think we may only see any sort of confirmed news by end of 2020 and bikes actually launching by 2021.

Ninja 300 is stopped in many countries when the Euro 4 shift happened. India is probably one of the very few countries where the 300 is still sold. Around 100 nos/month when it was selling. So Kawasaki will have to update the engine just for India. Some sites have reported that this may happen.

Similarily, R3 may also launch when the Euro 5 shift happens which is equivalent to BS6.

I think the Ninja will remain pretty much the same. R3 will be different like in the international markets with new display, bodywork, stiffer suspension etc. Not sure about the front USDs. Yamaha may just provide the conventional forks like they did with R15 V3 and MT15.

      All the best! Cheers!

Better go for the BSIV version because of the following reasons:
        1. You will get the bike at a lower cost now as company is trying to clear existing stock of BSIV.
        2. BSVI models of existing bike (Versys 1000) are facing issue with fuel as right now, BSVI fuel availability is next to none. BSIV fuel is causing injectors clogging.
        3. BSVI models might have lower power output to remain within the exhaust norms.

Even I was looking to get a Ninja 300 BSIV. Are they still available. If so, should I approach the showroom and ask for a discount?
