  • Wish to know your suggestion for a bike under 3 lakh

    Hello all,

I am looking to buy a bike below 2.5 lakh preferably, but it can be stretched to around 3 lakh

    1. Budget : 2-5 - 3 lakh
    2. Age : 25
    3. Height : 170cm
    4. Weight : 60 kg
    5. Intended usage (eg. Office/College commute, Highway runs, Racetrack usage, Weekend recreation riding etc.) : Mostly commute, but want a exciting highway ride nonetheless
    6. Fuel Efficiency requirement (approx., if any) : Above upper 20s, preferably in 30s
    7. City & Highway percentage usage : 1:1
    8. Approximate Daily / Monthly running : I would rather not mention I don't actually require the bike, I just want one. The running will not be as high as most of you guys, but you can rest assured that I will try.
    9. City / Town /Village of residence (so we can evaluate road conditions / traffic / terrain / altitude / OTR pricing) : Bangalore
    10. Brand / Bike type preference (if any) : Just need a reliable bike

I do not have any preference for naked or fared bikes though I will admit that fared bikes do look cool
As I live in Bangalore, I would like to avoid bikes that heat too much (yes, looking at you Duke 390)

    That's all

I go through xBhp ownership threads, YouTube reviews and can't seem to make up my mind due to the following opinions. Feel free to correct me:
    1. Gixxer SF 250 - A good bike, but service centres seem to be that bad that people sell the bikes because of it. Also Suzuki doesn't seem to be on the same level as other Japanese brands in terms of reliability (based on the handful of ownership reviews I have seen)
    2. CBR 250 - Archaic, no thanks. 1. is better
    3. Duke 250 - A really good bike. Feel like it's much more bang for the buck than the gixxer 250s and fun. Gets a bigger disk in BS6 so no issues in braking now. Opinions on reliability are mixed. So, questions over reliability. But this is the closest to striking it home
    4. Dominar - Again a really good bike. It's weight is manageable but I would prefer a lighter bike if there is not much to separate elsewhere. Also while Duke 250 is like riding a bicycle, you can feel the effort needed to handle this bike. Drinks a lot of petrol too but this can be ignored
    5. RR 310 - I saw a youtube video where the guy showed a bill of 13k for a service. Even though this bill included other things as well, you get the point. Hear a lot of bad things about vibrations. Also has a very small vicks candy like pillion seat. Didn't ride it yet. Hear good things about service centres though
    5. CB300R - Very costly for what it provides. Also, looks small for a 300 and a small pillion seat. Eyes wandering to the Dukes. Fun to ride though + Honda reliability
    6. Duke 390 - Not practical for Bangalore city riding. It's a very sweet deal though
    7. No REs thanks
    8. N300 - Over budget
    9. Did I miss any bike ?
    Special mention. FZ 25 - 250cc -> 21 bhp. Not in consideration

As you might have noticed, reliability is what I want foremost and so will have a slight preference for Japanese brands (though Suzuki does not seem to be like the rest in this regard. Please correct me if I am wrong). Lack of good options

I know I should test ride all of them but test rides won't help me with the above point so looking for your opinions
Also, I have test ridden some of the above bikes and really won't say no to any of them. Bikes are fun right?

Now there are 2 possibilities: I will get roasted in the comments for not being a purist (not having any preference or shortlist) or this post will get ignored for being too broad.

But I am looking forward to your comments. I am open to any bike >= 250cc so hit me with your opinions, but please do try to provide reasons why you suggest the bike over other bikes in the budget

Thanks for reading the long post

No Japanese bikes in this price range have comfortable pillion seat. FZ 25's seat is somewhat comfortable .

So there's no bike for you having all the qualities mentioned above.

Apart from Japanese bikes only RE himalayan and Bajaj dominar have comfortable pillion seats.

And you can also try tje RE thunderbird or Classic 350 too.

Try an tvs apache 310 bs6 model, your al doubts would be cleared.take a test drive or rent it and you would know the difrrence from bs4 to bs6.

And,if you dont have any problem with second hand bikes give a chance to second hand ninja 300.

In my opinion the best most enjoyable bike in the list you gave is cbr250 but if you do intended to thrash it even sometimes I'd suggest you find a good used one. I personally don't trust bajaj but I'm hearing good things from dominor owners so dominor is also a safe bet. But I find dominor too bulky of a bike with entirely too much power. It'll be frustrating in traffic. If twins are what you desire then my suggestion will be to go for a used n300 since that won't be over budget and comes with slipper clutch. Alternatively, you can search for a n250 as well. Unless you crash it it demands very little maintenance. Also try R3 in seconds but don't go for KTM. From personal experience, these bikes are a handful.

My top picks out of your list would be-

              1. Apache 310 RR (BS6)
              2. CB 300 R
              3. KTM Duke 250 (BS6)

              Take a test ride.

Thanks for the comment! But sorry, I am not looking at the REs. Those are the only bikes I am 100 % sure I don't want to buy. I just can't seem to connect.
Actually pillion seat is not a deal breaker but I would have preferred a decent pillion seat...
So in that sense CB300R is also a good option but is a bit pricy

Really? That gets my hopes up. I will definitely try a test ride for RR 310
I am not considering second hand bikes unfortunately. That surely would have spiced things up !

Oh I definitely do intend to do many spirited drives but I don't think I have the heart to thrash it (for the safety of the bike as well as myself)
I think finding a good used one will be too much of a pain + we can never be sure about second hand things
So I haven't considered buying second hand bikes

Yeah, I too feel the same. I think the power is manageable but it sure is bulky to ride in traffic, even though you get used to it

Oh so KTMs are a no go? They seem closest to perfection otherwise
This helped. Thanks a lot !

I think finding a good used one will be too much of a pain + we can never be sure about second hand things
So I haven't considered buying second hand bikes

Oh so KTMs are a no go? They seem closest to perfection otherwise
This helped. Thanks a lot !

Yeah, I too feel the same. I think the power is manageable but it sure is bulky to ride in traffic, even though you get used to it

I get where you're coming from regarding second hand bikes and I agree as far as single cylinder bikes are concerned, but if you're gonna look at multi cylinder bikes your concern isn't valid. Primarily because these bikes have more than double the durability and life of a single cylinder machine, these cost money so most owners don't abuse them, usually sell at very low mileage, usually kept clean and well serviced. Also, you can pick one up from a superbike forum or even an xbhpian who is selling to get the best bike for the best price and with peace of mind.

In any case, don't go for seconds if you don't want to but don't let rumors and hearsay about seconds market affect your decision.
