• Buying a superbike in India!

Hey all,

I have recently decided to move back to India after a few good years in the U.S.! I never owned a car and always rode a bike no matter where I worked! As I am about to sell my Hypermotard 821, I thought hey I should look up bikes in India to see how much it gonna cost me!

As I skim through some Youtube videos and Facebook posts I realized that every one prices their bike as per they like, did talk to a guy and he kept telling me that he has 4 lakh worth of accessories on the bike. I completely honor the full system exhaust but all the other stuff?!? I gave in and called the dealership, and he quoted me 7 lakhs for an 848 Evo with 10000kms on it and I was like oh the desmo service will come up at 12000kms I guess... would you consider that a bit to lower the price and all he said was "bhaiya ji market me best price hai ye, upar se new battery bhi hai"

I understand the desi style of selling stuff! But can someone help me get a decent deal here! Like I would happily pay up to 6 to 7.5ish lakhs for a decent bike from a decent lad! I have bought and sold 3 superbikes and few 300cc but never got into a place where everything was just extremely overpriced! Yes haven't bought a bike in India from the last 6 years so I don't know how much things have changed!

I would really appreciate it if someone can push my search in the right direction or just give me some key points to understand the market better

If you can highlight your requirements, it will be easier to point you in the right direction.
What kind of a bike you are looking for.
What kind of riding you will be doing.
Which city you will be based in India.

Mostly, a sportbike, I do ride a Hypermotard right now, so I am quite open for Sport-tourers/Hyper bikes too!
I plan on doing mostly small out of city rides and track days.
I will be moving back to Dehra Dun and I don't mind even traveling to south India for a good bike!

Dehradun does not have service centre for superbike, you will have to travel to Chandigarh or Delhi, please keep that in mind.

Yes, I can totally manage that, I mostly work on my own bikes until or unless it's something major like an engine rebuilt!

Seldom to people clock any serious miles on their SBK's in India so do be selective about whom you ask for advice.

As far as I know bigron would be the best person to direct your queries to as he has clocked quite a bit on his Hayabusa on Indian roads.

Cheers,

Well, For track days the only feasible option you have is BIC, whose future is still debatable.
I personally would recommend a sport tourer, which you can use to enjoy the hilly roads of Doon city plus can comfortably use for out of city rides.

I can recommend bikes like CBR650R, Triumph Street Triple RS, Ninja 636, Z900 etc. There are quite a few of these on our roads, hence availability of parts, after market parts etc should be better too.

Make sense Rachit! I kinda want to go for a sportbike but I understand road conditions and city rides are something I have to be mindful of when riding in India. I really like CBR650R and z900! But honestly, I would still be looking for a sportbike if I can get a good deal on it.

I am more concerned about how can I get a good bike as during my initial search around Delhi I found a lot of bad deals and overpriced bikes.

Are you considering a new or a used bike?

Used for sure, but I would prefer buying from an individual and not from a dealership.

Well, the used market in India is not as structured as in US. A lot depends on the model of the bike, its demand, the owner and the condition of the bike.

Some patience and research should help you get good deals.

I too have been looking at used as well as new big bikes. If you are certain that you want a sports (faired? supersport?) bike, then the ZX6R or a used Daytona, 848 EVO may be your best bet. Problem is the ZX6R is newish and not many used examples would be out there. The other two have a huge cult following and are difficult to find in good condition at a good price. Suggest you remain open to something like the Street Triple S/RS which are a dime a dozen and I am sure several of the 675 examples can be had in your price range in Delhi.

You may be best off just using that 6 lakhs as downpayment and buying a new bike of your choice. Will you be DD based permanently or commuting to and fro Delhi? If you are going to be munching large miles and touring on the bike, suggest you either get an ADV/Naked or get your sports bike and add a 390 ADV at some point.

For me, it is increasing looking like buying new. What though, I am not sure.
