Bike for Sports Touring under 7 lakhs

    Bike for Sports Touring under 7 lakhs

    Hi everyone, I'm looking for a bike (new or pre-owned) with the following specifications -
    1. Budget - 7 lakhs max
    2. Age - 28
    3. Height - 5'6"
    4. Weight -70 kgs
    5. Intended usage - Office commute, Highway use mostly
    6. Fuel Efficiency requirement - not a priority
    7. City & Highway percentage usage - City - 40%, Highway 60%
    8. Approximate Daily / Monthly running - approx 1500kms a month
    9. City (so we can evaluate road conditions / traffic / terrain / altitude / OTR pricing) - Delhi/NCR
    10. Brand / Bike type preference (if any) - Brands with good reliability & manageable Service Costs
    11. Bike style - Faired / Semi- faired


    Keeping in mind the above requirements, I came up with the following bikes -


    1. Honda CBR 650R (Although quite above my budget) - so definitely looking for a pre-owned one
    2. Ninja 650
    3. Royal Enfield 650 twins - no wind protection & looking for a sports tourer, so out of the equation
    4. Yamaha R3 - not sure when they'll be launching the BS 6 version.
    5. KTM Duke 790 - out of budget & minimal windblast protection
    5. Naked bikes - Suzuki GSX-S750, Kawasaki Z900 etc. - not a fan of the naked style, & out of budget as well, but open to suggestions.


    I'd request my fellow xBHPians to suggest their views & help me in getting a bike. 😊

      I would recommend the Ninja 650. Fantastic All rounder. Pretty reliable platform. Kawi keeps improving it every year.
      The latest model has decent spec too like LED headlights, Full TFT screen and all.

        Thanks Rachit.

        Took a test ride of the older model (before the weight reduction & all)
        However, they've bumped up the price quite a bit in the past one year, so not too sure about it. Plus, heard about the high servicing costs for Kawasaki.

        Will go for a test ride of the newer model. So, it's between the Ninja & a pre-owned CBR 650R - if that ever shows up in the market.

          Ninja 650 unless you specifically want an Inline four. Also, twin cylinders are less sensitive to bad fuel.... so if you ever want to tour on your bike, Ninja will be a better option.

            You can go for a pre owned CBR650F....a 2018 model that's not heavily used can be seen in the market for around 6-7 lakh range....the bike has enough power and is pretty fuel efficient too...sure it might seem a bit outdated compared to modern day bikes but then again it does have an in-line 4 cyclinder engine. Cherry on top is the ridiculous cheap maintenance cost where each service can run you about 4-7k(depending on where you stay) which is a farcry from SVC costs of kawasaki which runs at a minimum of 8K (which is almost double that of the cbr) How do I know all this? I myself already paid for a cbr650f (as an upgrade from my R3) and will be taking delivery in the next few days. In your budget and requirements I feel it is the best because I had the same concerns and questions that you have right now almost a month ago before I finally made up my mind. Hope this helped.               Based on your requirements I feel it should be Honda CBR 650R. Its most 'easy to live with' big bike.

                It will be great to know what bike you are coming from ?
                40% city usage is a lot for SBK. Be prepared for heavier clutch, added weight on slow speeds, low FE, parking safety issues & heat.
                If you are hell bent on a sports tourer only, then the CBR/Ninja is a good bet but will have the above mentioned issues. If one has to own a SBK only with such high city usage then a naked is better. You can always go for a touring windscreen to make highway usage much more manageable.

                  I know you said Sports Tourer, so unless you manage find a pre owned Ninja 1000 in your budget, you'll be left with Honda and Suzuki 700s. They're great bikes in terms of reliability but lack mid range, when compared to other offerings. Doubt that they're unusable, but out and out performance is not their forte. I'd consider the Honda since you want to do city commute, it'll be dirt cheap to maintain, something to consider given your high running.

                  Having said all this, do consider the Vstrom, I think it may be the ideal mix for your requirements

                    Ninja 650 is a great bike but the new 2021 version will break the 7 L barrier for you.

                    I suggest the Ninja 400. It's the fastest of the all the 300-400 cc class and extremely comfortable bike for long distance touring. Managing will be slightly cheaper than a 650 and it will be more easy to ride in the city for office commutes. It's a much lighter motorcycle. You can get a new one under 6 L and customize for touring.

                    R3 is another great option but unfortunately not available to buy.
