• Ninja 300 or Benelli 302S or R3???

Hey Guys,

I own a CBR 150R for the past seven years and I am so far happy about it. I am planning for an upgrade and as the topic says, I want to go towards parallel twin. I know Bennelli 302S & R3 is not yet available with the BS-6 version. But if they are available along with Ninja 300, which one can I consider. My priority is as below in the sequence.

1. Comfortable for touring
2. Hasslefree ownership - Relatively low maintenance cost & spare parts availability
3. Mileage from 25 to 30 kmpl
4. Can be used for occasional daily commute.

Please share your thoughts.

The reason for not considering Interceptor 650 is because of the RE ownership experience I could see with my friends. This is my thought for staying away from RE and it is not to hurt anyone.

As you said neither is available now and no idea when it will happen. Best is to wait will they are launched before taking a decision. Between the two options I would choose a Japanese bike over a Chinese bike anyday. The Yamaha will simply be more reliable and also should be a lot lighter than the Benelli. I heard the BS6 version of the Benelli is over 200 kgs. That's ridiculous for a small twin cylinder bike. I would suggest the Benelli only if cost is an issue as the new Yamaha will be around 4.5l on road and the Benelli should be 60k less at least.
Another option to consider if you are OK with a naked bike is the CF moto 650nk. Though that will be around 5l at least.

Thank you for the suggestion. My bugger as of now is 4L. But as you said let me also workout the ownership cost on the options. Common compliant among the existing Benelli owners is the frequent services and cost of each service.

If you are open to buying used bikes, you can look at 2017+ Ninja 650. You can easily score one within 4-5lacs (depending on the ODO reading and condition).
N650 would be a better ride as compared to all the options that you have mentioned.

From what I know, BSVI R3 will not launch before 2021. N300 might launch by end of 2020.

None of these bikes will return a consistent 25-30 kmpl mileage.
N300 and R3 will return about 22-25 in city and around 27-30 on the highway (speed strictly less than 130)
N650 will return around 18-21 in city and around 25-30 on the highway (less than 130kmph).
FE will drop drastically north of 130kmph (thats where the fun is on these machines)

Hi SaHaRa,

1. Comfortable for touring - All 3 bikes are extremely comfortable and capable for touring all day long. I have done 10-11 hrs on Benelli and R3. 302S is a naked bike. Did you mean 302R? The fully faired bike? I'm guessing because the other 2 bikes of your choice are fully faired ones. If you're talking about the naked, then you might wanna look at a wind screen attachment.

2. Hasslefree ownership - Relatively low maintenance cost & spare parts availability - Yamaha R3 is the cheapest over here. Kawasaki has reduced the price with local parts but I'm unable to confirm. Maybe the parts price have gone down but labor charges will still be premium I suppose. Benelli is expensive. All these bikes are CKDs so some important parts may not be available immediately as compared to locally manufactured bikes. It is what it is and that's the life with a CKD bike. Small parts and consumables are available easily. I have owned TNT300 and now I have the R3. Benelli service costs were 6K. R3 is 3K-3.5K. That's 50% cheaper. That's why Benelli is really struggling and that's why I sold my Benelli.

3. Mileage from 25 to 30 kmpl - You will not get 30 mileage with any of these 3 bikes. City will be 21-22. Highway can be 27 max if you are 100-120 around 7K RPM.

4. Can be used for occasional daily commute. - Ninja is the best handler here. Then R3, very close and the lightest of the 3. Benelli's are heavy for slow moving traffic and parking in tight spaces because of the weight. Also reversing the Benelli was a nightmare for me. Almost 200 kilos.

Please avoid the Benelli - The bike is actually really good except the weight and the service costs are high. I really love the engine on the Benelli but I can't recommend the bike. It's between N300 or R3. You can't go wrong with either of the 2.

Cheers!

I would suggest R3, due to service network coverage, and ample power, and has great ground clearance of 160mm. But you'll not get the BS6 version now.

Since you're considering city commutes as well, anything below 140mm is hectic whenever a speed-bump appears.

Ninja300 is cheaper to purchase but r3 would be cheaper to live with and spares would be much cheaper and more easily available compared to the quacker. I honestly find the r3 having much more usable power than the top end centric n300

What are the luggage options on the R3? I am looking for any option that is an improvement over my FZ25. The bike is great in terms of luggage carrying capacity with saddlebags and a topbox, but woefully underpowered.

Damn our market and the lack of options
