  • upgrade from pulsar 150 2011 model

Currently own a Pulsar 150 2010 model. Getting consistent mileage of 55 km/l till date. I take care of my bike very well. Changed chain sprocket for 1.2k, rear shock absorbers for 1.4k, tyres for 3.2k and 2 batteries for 2.8k in last 10 years.

    Bikes considered:

    # Pulsar ns160
    # hero xtreme 160 r dual disc
    # Apache RTR 160 4V BS-6 dual disc

Very confused in selecting my next bike. My current ride has been trouble free and maintenance free with closed chain cover, kick starter etc.

My requirements are decent pickup with two people and pillion comfort and rear set foot pegs. Cannot ride a bike with front set foot pegs. I really like Hero Glamour BS6 2020 with 5 gears but not getting it because of the front set foot pegs.

I am 6 feet tall with slim body, weighing 72 kgs. Don't like bikes which are too heavy like Royal Enfields etc. Budget is not a constraint. Mileage should be at least 40 plus. I ride very sanely. I wont touch speeds above 80-90 on highways and ride below 60-70 km/h in cities.

Please suggest any bike which will be maintenance free and good after sales. I can spend big amounts but I dislike frequent maintenance. I can spend 2k for single service visit but willing to visit service centre only once in 4 or 6 months. Bike shouldn't breakdown. Open to any other option as well.

Price should be below 2 lakhs on road. The lower the better.

Bro the bikes you mentioned are not realy upgrades.you already have 150 cc bike.so do consider for higher cc engine.and btw p220 gives decent mileage.have very good seats.it's low end nd mid end is very good.
Have got projector headlamps.suspension is good.you can ride it at speeds of 100 kmph, without stressing the engine.its great for highway rides.

            Hi all,

everyone suggesting me p220. my thought about p220 is..i am worried about fairing rattles and discontinuation owing to success ofr ns160 and ns200. pulsar220 street edition (without fairing) was available sometime ago, it would be direct choice. only worried about fairing rattles , also heard about main stand scraping on bumps and speed breakers. any alternatives?

I would suggest you to not go for P220 or P150 or even P180. Those are a decade old engines. Bajaj is just milking them for profits. I am.not saying they are bad bikes, but there are plenty of other bikes from Yamaha, Honda, TVS and Suzuki in the price range you are looking for. If you are looking for hassel free butter smooth engines then go for a Honda or Yamaha bike.

If everyone is suggesting you p220 then their mite be something about the bike that those people are suggesting you, fairing rattling was a big issue before 2017,but after that bajaj have done lot of work on their bikes.

I don't agree, they mite be old engines but still they are working well, and every bike have issues nd niggles.bajaj have done a lot of good work .Parts are easy to get and cheap regarding other OEMs.service cost is cheap and if anyone knows how to maintain them can do it on their own.if bajaj bikes were not good they mite not be selling in numbers as they do.they have vast network of asc in india.honda,Yamaha ,suzuki are not bad .But they do have their fair share of problems.

Go for Pulsar 220, i myself own the BS4 version. It has no rattles in fairing. Just change oil every 2k kilometers ( normal mineral oil) and you'll face no problem. It has amazing night visibility due to projectors, amazing torque and comfortable suspension setup. It may be old but still is a gem of a machine.

Bro one more thing ns and rs 200 still can't beat the sales of p220 together.so that means people still buy p220.

I was on the same boat as you a few days ago, I have booked the FZs v3. P220 is suggested here and its a great bike but I dont think it gives a mileage of 40+ consistently (at least to the people I asked). Apache 160 4v is also an amazing bike, i did test drive it but i liked the fz more. You will like the apache because the footpegs are a lot behind (which i did not like) and it has a bit of sportier feel to it. The fz also lacks a bit of power, you can look at fz25 or rtr 200 4v if you need that punch. But again, anything above 160cc wont give you 40+ mileage consistently.

Edit: take whatever i say with a grain of salt because i have just started riding, and i just shared whatever i came to understand while searching and test driving for my first ride.

Re: upgrade from pulsar 150 2011 model

FZ V3 is a good bike, but OP wants a upgrade while he also wants 40 kmpl. So, yes it will give FE but won't be an upgrade in terms of power, rather a downgrade.

Regarding FE of P220, with pure thrill riding, I get 35 kmpl continuously, includes typical traffic jams and highway runs at 99-100 kmph. And my bike is always carrying a payload of atleast 130 kgs at these times.

Regarding the scraping of main stand, it's an easy fix, remove the rubber that the stand hits and cut it in half. And if you want extra height, add P135 rear shocks.

Fairing rattle isn't an issue unless you fall down, even then, some double tape on the frame of fairing solves it.

Advantage of Pulsar shows when you go to aftermarket and the parts are not only widely and easily available but also OEM pricing is so cheap, you wouldn't even think of getting alternate parts ever. Japs have expensive parts but availability is also an issue.

Price wise, you get the best bang for your buck with Bajaj or TVS. Get NS or Apache or Pulsar, and you'd be happy with the thrill for your money.

I was in a similar state, 2 years ago, I was looking at Hornet and FZ, then I tried Pulsar and these are very good VFM.

Also, old pulsars are pretty easy to maintain.

The OP has mentioned Pulsar 125 and Glamour as the bikes they are considering. So i assumed they are not looking for an upgrade on power. Thanks.
