  • Commuter under 1.5L capable of 50 km/l

    Hi all,

I am from Bangalore. I'm looking for a bike which I will be using for both daily commute (40kms) as well as for weekly trip of 200 km up and down.

I'm 6ft/90kgs. I need a comfortable ride with soft suspension and strain-less handlebar position.

I am expecting around 50 km/l mileage, good tyre grip and brakes. I'm planning for long term usage. Not looking for top speed performance.

As of now I've circled on the following bikes:
    1. Apache 160 2V - Test ride felt good but I'm wondering whether I'll get back pain in the long run due to it's riding position. Also, it has the risk of getting discontinued if 4V becomes popular.

    2. Apache 160 4V - Couldn't get test ride to check it's riding position. Seems fine to me except the mileage part in the long run as it has 4V and tuned for top end performance.

    3. Unicorn BS6 - skeptical about tyre grip and brakes because of skinny tyres and lack of disk.

    4. FZS - Keeping as last option, because of poor plastic build quality all around. Don't know their longevity.

Help me with your inputs so that I can finalise. Any other options also welcome.

I could vouch for Unicorn. I'm 6"2 and was a Unicorn rider for 6 years. Unicorn was the most comfortable sub 200cc bike I've ever ridden. Plush ride quality, good engine, and healthy mileage. Though the Apaches and FZs would be more engaging than Unicorn, I don't think those would be as comfortable as Unicorn is.

With the above said, I moved to a FZ250 from Unicorn, and found slightly difficult to adapt to the stance in the initial days(wrist pains and all). After few weeks, my body adapted to FZ's stance, and didn't face any issue or discomfort after that, even during 100-150Kms of ride. So even if you choose an Apache or a FZ, you should be fine within a week or two from a comfort stand point. I'm not sure how it'll turn in long run though, as you're planning to keep the bike for long.

If you're open for scooters, why don't you consider a Burgmann? The scooter was super comfortable and had good grunt as well. I believe the engine should deliver a healthy mileage and will be capable of doing a 200/day trip without any issue.

      Cheers!

        Hi there!

The Apache is a good option but do consider the Hero Xtreme 200R or S. They are much more relaxed and comfortable and has a soft suspension well suited for city riding. It's a good power commuter and can return a mileage of 50 kmpl.

        Cheers! All the best!

XTREME200 bs6 version is not yet released it seems. Xpluse is available though. I'm not going to offroading anywhere, so it's not for me either.

Yesterday I went to Honda showroom to checkout unicorn. But liked the looks of hornet 2.0 and test rode it too. I was in awe with its handling and acceleration. Only small discomfort I felt is its slightly rear set footpegs which were little new to me as I have to lift my right toe little higher up to press the rear brake. I didn't feel the same with gear shifting though.
I will have to wait for ownership reviews to know about is mileage and other problems.
