  • STANDARS v/s ELECTRA

    Hi,
I know this topic would have been beaten to death several times. But I am back to the same point of confusion
I like the Standard's looks and the right side gear shift, but am in a profession where I really can not spend too much time caring and maintaining the bullet. My friends advise me to go for an Electra instead which does not impress me too much.
Bullet giants, Prakhar or Desideep, rescue me.

Am offered a Oct, 08 standard 6900 kms on the odo @ 56k at Hyderabad. Is it a safe bet? This is the first time ever am buying a BULLET.

    Moderators, please help me decide.

IF you are looking for Old style gear change and Brakes, and with the comfort of modern technology go for Electra 4S, there is not much difference between the two, evrything is same, except the ignition system and shockers.

        Thanks Shashank for the message.
The problem is RE probably does not sell 4S any more and I dont seem to find one used easily
Is the one I am quoted OK?

Well, this is what I thought till couple of days back, but when I visited the dealership, I was told that RE is still making them on booking and one can be delivered in a weeks time. Then I called other dealerships and was surprised to know that many of them had it in stock and for ready delivery.

And i am only talking about y'day, in Delhi.

Even I am a novice, so its ok. My knowledge is what I have read on this forum and other sources.

Its realiable and well trusted. However you should read through this forum before making a choice, the only major technical difference in ignition system, Electra has a modern one, and its easy to maintain and more reliable than Standard. Not that Standard is not reliable, but its better to go for that if you have super confidence in your mechanical skills.

And what about the price I am quoted for the Standard? Is it an OK price?

                  Electra VS Standard.

See the basic difference between a Standard 350 and an Electra4S is that the electra has electronic ingnition CDI if i am right and the Standard 350 runs on good CB points so in effect the standard 350 retains the classic bullet thump where each beat is really distinct thump and with a good silencer can sound like pure symphony while the electra loses this and the beat is a little more continious of course the classic bullet thump is there but the thumps are a little more continous and a bit of a vurr kind of sound.

With this in mind the advantages of the electronic ignition electra is immense. Kick starting the Bull will be relatively easier and you will not have to hold the decomp lever and kick till you get the ammeter to get to the center and all. Just one kick down with the decomp on and then a firm pump with your foot this time without the decomp and you ll hear the baby thud into life. The Electra will run without a battery even (Mine ran a good 3 years without a battery ) whilst you don't wanna be stuck with a weak battery on a standard. And need to be extra cautious whilst washing the bike or in rain as if water gets into the point set it s a pain in all the wrong places.

Bottomline: The Electra4s is a reliable workhorse with the CDI and the Electra5s is basically a Electra4s with all her advantages and 5 speed gearbox on the left instead of right like on a "Bullet" and without that genius of a neutral lever whilst the Standard is the lone surving "Bullet" in the true sense as RE have stopped selling Electra4s. The Machismo and the Tbird carry a altogether a diffrent engine a with different charecteristics.
