  • Bike choice: Very Confused Biker

    Hi,

I'm 6.1 feet and thin as.. well, thin. I want a bike.

My riding varies from very smooth acceleration to rip and ride based on my mood. I currently own a Victor 110, and have a reputation to accelerate fast, but not cross 40 for long streches. However, I corner at very high speeds.
On my uncle's Fiero or my friends Unicorn or P220, i go as fast as I please, recording 100km a couple of times.

I would like your help to suggest a bike which:
    1. Can give good mileage (50kmpl+) when i drive it smoothly and preferably good mileage when I rip
    2. It should be able to rip.
    3. Seating must be comfortable as I have a weak back, so too must be the pillion's seat. I aim to go for a South India trip asap.
    4. Decent braking and good handling.
    5. Bearable maintainance cost (600rs/ service?)

    My choices were:
    1. Apache 180 - loved the reviews, got scared by the seating position and mileage. How long can one ride on this bike? How good is the mileage if i ride smoothly and whats its worst? (I'm from Bangalore) The no rev limiter is an issue at home as Dad was a mechanic once.
    2. Karizma - Seats good I heard, but heard mileage drops to 35kmpl after a year. Scared of maintenance cost.
    3. Avenger - Idea dropped due to sad rear seat width and reports of gearbox issues.
    4. Electra - Dont think it'll give the mileage i want, but is still somewhere on my mind. I'm however waiting for the twinspark engine to hit.
    5. Suzuki GS150R - seems like an all-in all. Few bikes on the road, but after the fiero, i'm kind of comfy with any Suzuki..
    6. Unicorn - Tried and tested. Happy with power, no idea of mileage. Heard i'd have to put by 1500rs / 2 months for maint.

I know what I'm asking for is very rare, but owner please suggest the best out of the lot. Budget is abt 75 to 80K. Please quote costs and mileage if you can as it'll reduce vagueness

Whats your idea on waiting for Honda's CBR150? Is it worth the wait? How is the Apache 160Fi?

    Thanks a lot guys!

You seem to show insistence on 50+ mileage... So the only two bikes out of the list which fit your list are the Suzuki GS150R and the Unicorn... Seating is pretty comfortable in both bikes... Unicorn as you might already know is known for its comfort... Both the bikes are capable of 'rippin'... But i guess the GS 150 R will be more willing than the Unicorn... The Unicorn wont complain, but it is in a way a more lazy easy going bike... For your tours n stuff again both the bikes are ideal... Unicorn is a tried and tested tourer... GS150R has the advantage of cruising easily because of the 6th gear... Both have good braking and handling...

I would say go for the GS150R... A fresh new package... Hearing a lot of good reviews... Nice goodies... Fits your budget and your requirements...

Lol, thats fast. I'm very tempted by the idea i can accelerate fast on a Apache. I read now in some blog that I can get 50+kmpl on an 160Fi.. Is that true?

How about the Posture part of it?

Hmmm... I do not think you will be able to get such figures on the Apache 160fi regularly... N the posture part of the Apache might get lil uncomfortable for you keeping in mind your height... Why don you take a test ride n see for yourself... Comfort levels differ on every bike from rider to rider in my opinion...

I am getting constant 50 from day 1 with my RTR refresh & heard FIs are getting mileage around 55-60 under normal city ride.

My milege will down to 35 if i start crusing at 110 +. on highways
                Give way to trains.

Since you have a bad back and need 50+ mileage i would suggest you go for either the Unicorn or the GS150R. Both are reliable while the Unicorn has been on the market for quite long. The design has grown long in the tooth. The GS150R is also a capable bike and the 6th gear tilts the advantage in it's favour since you will be touring and this will help immensely while crusing at high speeds and maintaining the FE as well.

The RTR is pretty well sorted bike. Keep her under 60 and you will get 50+ kmpl FE. Ripping to speeds beyond that will hamper the FE but that's true for any 150cc bike. The posture is sporty rather than commuter-ish so wouldn't be as great on long distance jaunts. But it's an non-issue once you get used to it cause more than the posture it's usually the hard seats that will make you take a break on long distance rides.

I'll go with GS or the unicorn...have a TD of both and decide.Personally i feel unicorns handling is way better than Suzuki(i mean the confidence it inspires)...
It all begins with a thumb-start -- Oh, wait, I forgot the kill-switch

I would like your help to suggest a bike which:
                          1. Can give good mileage (50kmpl+) when i drive it smoothly and preferably good mileage when I rip -- Don't expect Zma, P220, rtr180 and Fazer to return this 50+ magic figure
                          2. It should be able to rip. -- Hmm P220, RTR 180 & Zma on top
                          3. Seating must be comfortable as I have a weak back, so too must be the pillion's seat. I aim to go for a South India trip asap. : Avenger offers excellent ride comfort others follows
                          4. Decent braking and good handling. -- P220 & RTR180 again
                          5. Bearable maintainance cost (600rs/ service?) -- Most bikes will come within this margin atleast throughout warranty period.

But considering your query to suggest a package I think like many said GS 150 makes good sense.. The 6 cogger could give you nice economy, comfort as well as occasional speed thrills in addition to low maintenance costs.. But tastes may vary so be sure to get a test ride of all your choices.

                              1. Can give good mileage (50kmpl+) - Unicorn
                              2. It should be able to rip. -- Unicorn
                              3. Seating must be comfortable as I have a weak back, so too must be the pillion's seat. I aim to go for a South India trip asap - Unicorn will make your trip
                              4. Decent braking and good handling. -- Unicorn
                              5. Bearable maintainable cost (600rs/ service?) -- Unicorn

Unicorn would be the best for all your requirements, I have a Unicorn using from past 4 years + and i ride to Chennai from Hosur atleast once in a month and I feel no hassles.
