  • Question on UCE-reliabiity of RE thunderbird-twinspark

Hi to all bike and bullet Gurus and lovers

After a lot of search and research i finally decided to buy a new RE Thunderbird - TwinSpark

but before investing 1.1 Lacs in this bike i want give you some background info about by bike-purchase so that all bullet-gurus and experts can give me some detailed information about this bike.

currentyl i am 30 yrs old and 15 years back I learned to drive my first bike and after turned 18 and till now i am driving this same beautiful bike, Yes, that's YAMAHA RX 100.

I used this bike for all purpose, to my collage, city use, daily office use, short 100 km to-fro trip, long 300+ to-fro trip and everywhere.

It is so reliable that i never felt unconfident while riding it long 200-300+long strech in one go. Just get over it and then it will take you where you want.
till now i never even thought of any other bike, but now i want give one partner to my RX100 which is more powerful(possibly double BHP), same reliable for 300+ distances in one go and which can last for next 15-20 years.
Due to this bike i get to know what is power and speed, only because of this i bought a car which is absolutely muscled and powerful car with excellent refined engine: FIAT Adventure sports.

I am not looking for a very high mileage-bike, i am happy with 35kmpl(+/- 5) which my current RX100 is giviing from last decade with same pickup.

So after starting such a search for bike which has around 20 bhp, fast pickup, highly reliable, excellent refined engine, handling and maneuvering capabilities, straight seating posture (no lean forward),
more than 90% external metal parts such as mudguards, underseat frame, side panels etc so as to have very less external fibre-material (so no need to worry about bad-paint-screches on fairing and breakage)

but unfortuanately i found only royal enfield bikes fitting in this criteria, so after a long search on different parameter such as engine-refinement, new technology, power and handling and some modern looks(which my wife preferred) i finally decided to put stamp on Thunderbird-Twinspark which has -
but before reading this i want to say to all bullet fans and lovers that at no point i am underestimating bullet bikes i.e. std bullet, electra or machismo, so don;t misunderstand me. i am just comparing bullet(s) and TBTS in terms of engine and some other minor features for which i feel more comfortable with TBTS

    so to continue, TBTS has
    1. UCE.
    2. Front Panel display for all necessary parameter as compard to other RE bikes
    3. Completely free from oil leakage problem (as claimed by dealer)
    4. No manual decompressing as compared to other RE bikes so I hope atleast kick-start will remain easy even after 5-10 years( i tried to kick-start TBTS , electra, machismo at showroom and found TBTS is really easy)
    5. Separate assembly for headlight and panels
    6. Even it is uncomfortably positioned (which make kick starting TBTS somewhat wierd while seated position), it is not creating Obstacle to position your leg and applying break which i felt somewhat uneasy in other RE bikes
    7. easy handling in city (pune) traffic (mainly fast cornering) as compared to other bullets. ( from sayings of some bullet and TBTS owners), i can;t comment on this because i tested bullets and TBTS on empty road.
    8. Dealer is claiming that TBTS has very very less maintenance.

(if i am hurting bullet fans somehow, i am really sorry for that)

but even after this i have one major doubts in my mind about TBTS, that is
"Can i trust TBTS engine i.e. UCE for long tours i.e. 200+ km in one strech and even after without any problem of over-heating, oil-leakage, blackened spark-plugs, compulsory stop after 100km or 1hr etc, clutch pin and plates problems and last but not least 'engine refinement' "?

i am not a bullet owner but i heard and after googleing i came to know above problems of OLD TBTS and bullets.

Why i am worried about these because apart from power and strong build these are also very important factors for deciding bike for my style of liking and biking.

(@Admin : my this post may looks like another 'which bike or bullet post' but i could not find the answer to specific question here, not even on web, so your help is needed)

your suggesstion and feedback is most welcomed.

    farewell,
    Hemant

I ride a RE TBTS and am satisfied with it.
UCE is certainly better than the other enfield engines currently available
I've had some minor problems as is with any bike but nothing major.
It can run for long distances without overheating, if run with proper speed and handling.
I feel its good.. but again.. thats me....

        me too going for TBTS

        Hello everyone,
I have been reading a lot of threads on "which bullet" or "electra/machis/TBTS?".

As suggested, I took a Test Ride of TBTS and found it very comfortable and powerful. After owing Pulsar for 5 years now i am interested in a cruiser style bike. My only concern were:
        1. Is TBTS suitable for city traffic (i will be daily travelling around 25KM in heavy traffic in Mumbai)
        2. Is TBTS seating position better compared to other electra/machis for city driving?

I know TBTS will be great for long drives during weekends.

I am confused between Std 350 and TBTS as there is a price difference of 27K. Is the TBTS worth more 27K over Std 350?
I am planning to book one on this Diwali (saturday).

        Also, to answer to Hemant:
Hemant, all the things mentioned by you (pros of TBTS) are quite true. Also i feel that the new UCE Twinspark engine is certainly the way ahead. It gives better output and better fuel efficiency. Also they are easy to maintain.

        Thanks,
        Subu.

P.S: Did not want to start a new thread as this thread has all my queries too.

          As a Ex-Bullet owner :
Bullets generally likes to be in Highways. These are cruiser bikes.City Riding in Bullets often can overheat the Engine(Not Necessarily Means it damages).Remember the Old Engines are not very tolerant to rampant over heat.
But ,TBTS is a UCE Engine and it although retains old push rod design is UCE as well as Even boasts of Hydraulic Tappets.Only a TBTS Owner can Explain How it fares really.it now differs much from Old CI/AVL Bullets.
@subushady:Wait for UCE and May Be Fuel-Injected New Bullet 500cc soon.Buy a Std 350 ,if You want to Keep it with you for many many years to come

            Thanks for your quotes.

from reliability point of view TBTS is will not let you down on long tours.

But i observed some strong "chuk chuk" like sound from engine, dealer said it is because of long silencer, which i don't believe.

did anybody observed this strange sound?

            farewell,
