  • 125 cc bike dilemma

Hi folks, I am Rohit. I have posted an introduction in the introduction forum, but couldn't wait for the mods to approve it before I got this off my chest.

Like I have said there, I am learning to ride a bike now (at 25 years of age ) and will book a bike as soon as I get my driving license.

I am 171 cm tall and weigh 77Kg - typical nerdy profile.

I am mainly interested in the 100-125cc bike BUT with the following constraints:

    1. disc brake
    2. 5th gear
    3. tachometer (don't know why, but I WANT a tacho)
    4. the bike shouldn't be too heavy for me to handle - I should be able to get it on/off its centre stand by myself; or pick it back up after a slide

Since this (first 3) combo is not found on any 100cc bike, that leaves me with 125cc segment.

Honda Shine - I am learning currently on a colleague's Shine - 15 min during lunch everyday. I find it to be slightly unwieldy, a bit heavy. But that maybe because I am not used at all to what a bike weighs in general and how it is to be handled. No tacho though.

Yamaha Gladiator - Has the first 3 features. I skimmed through the owner thread and found the owner to be in a love-hate relationship with his Gladiator. Not suitable for a first time bike, I think.

Suzuki Zeus - Has the first 3. But not able to find much feedback about it on the forums. People are recommending it sometimes, but no one is saying that he/she has bought it.

I can make provision for upto 65K, I guess; as I would be applying for a loan.

@rohit, Zeus is good bike for your requirements, segment best Low end torque, decent mileage of 50+kmpl, solid engine and gearbox, even features are attractive. just check out after sales details in your city (It's a Suzuki company and in India they are no.1 when it comes to after sales w.r.t cars, bikes I believe it should be equally good or it should get better with time).

I second that. It also comes with a gear indicator, which will be very helpful for new riders.
Just check up once at Suzuki though, I believe there is a newer model of Zeus coming soon.

Rohit, Zeus aint a bad bike, in fact it is one of the best 125 cc bikes but lets face it, it is 8.58 Bhp bike. Is the power enough? Ok, the bike is sturdy enough, almost maintainence free and will keep on delivereing the same performance time after time. The cosmetics aint too good either....but they are sturdy.

Also, as for Newer mobel, its already on Sale at the Showrooms, but its just a Black paint work, black alloys and few changed graphics and yes, who can forget the changed indicators from GS 150R
Its not about the BHP or the CC, its about one common religion called Biking!!!

Save the Tigers! Only 1411 (excluding ME) are left!

This is my entry in the blogging world!!

Go for Discover dts-si, much better than the list that U'd like to finalise. My advice would be that U better go in for a used-bike for a period of 3-4 months, once U are used to handling, cornering, in-gear speeding, maintaining... then that will help u utmost in hadling a brand-new bike with full ease & tension-free mind. If suppose U take a new bike at this stage when ur riding not that much clear, then just imagine u falling from ur new bike & getting all dents & bends around her... U WILL SIMPLY LOSE YOUR SENSES buddy sighting such a scene. Better go in for a used passion/splendor/any alternate of your choice for time being as this will only make u skilled in riding tecniques.

You must be the change you wish to see in the world

I second the sturdy part. It is selling like hot cakes in interior towns&running very well on rough roads. They actually prefer the Heat, but its discontinued I guess.
I find it to be a safe bet price wise also as he is a learner.

If i were you and i had your requirements then i would have gone for Yamaha gladiator. I have tried it and i can clearly say it is better than shine . The comfort it gives for long tours is very good. In my opinion it looks better than zeus or shine. After all it is a yamaha so dont worry about reliability. It will serve you for years without much issues. I have used yamaha 125 (Ybx) for many years and i can easily say the acceleration and low end torque is more than expected from a 125 cc . i enjoyed each moment i spent with my old ybx. So i suggest you to go for yamaha gladiator.

PS : My old ybx is now 10 years old and still running with same old capabilities without any engine issues (but the body fibre parts are broken due to the rough handlign over years) . I had ripped it to the maximum in my college days and the engine is still perfroming extremly good without any problems .Now my cousin is using it .

                      1. Honda Stunner
                      2. Discover 135 ( better go for this one. i dnt knw if 125 is stil made )
                      3. Suzuki Zeus
                      4. Yamaha Gladiatior
                      5. Hero Honda Glamour ( FI wil be nice )

Just take a test ride of them and it wil be give u exact picture.

IMHO you can have a go on Stunner and Glamour.

@thunderbird_m6, the thought of polishing my skills on a second hand bike did cross my mind. But I think a good second hand bike will come for 30K. And then to go for another expense of 60K in 4-5 months... my parents will politely ask me to live on the bike

@mav1234, I honestly did not look at Hero Honda and Bajaj. A bike is tied to emotions, and for some reason, these two companies rub me the wrong way. Not that I dislike HH; for years I watched my dad ride his CD100 to work with starry eyes. But so far, only Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki and TVS stir the feeling of owning a bike in me.

@all of you, thanks for your advice.

Gladiator was my first choice when I decided to get a bike a month ago (when I didn't even know how to ride), but the sheer absence of any Gladiators in Mumbai (at least in the Kandivili to Andheri part) and the cold-hot reports on forums led me to look further.

Regarding Zeus, the lack of power maaaaay sting my heart a few times...

I think I will ask for a test ride on these two bikes as soon I get my license. But I think I am swinging towards the Gladiator again...
