  • Confused between all Royal Enfields

    Dear All,

I am planning to buy a new bike and am confused between all Royal Enfield models.

I am ~6 ft tall and looking for a bike for long rides. My considerations are that the bike should be comfortable for the rider and the pillion for long rides (It should be easy to ride for 6-8 hrs. straight without fatigue).

I tried the Thunderbird but felt that it had some vibrations (I could see the keychain vibrating, also could feel the vibes on my left wrist when I used the horn).

I then tried the Electra, and could not see the vibrations. Also the city handling seemed a bit easy (Is it due to the handle position). Electra has a little higher torque and thunderbird a higher BHP and runs on a higher RPM.

Recently Enfield has launched the Classic model. I am more onfused now as the specs of Thunderbird and Classic 350 are the same (except the higher ground clearence, length and width).

My question is which bike will be most comfortable in handling and seating in long drives on a straight highway and also on a mountainous terrain. I will also use a luggage carrier in my bike on long drives.

Your comments will really be helpful.

    Regards,

@rsnfunky - Hii and welcome to xbhp! Well as of now RE offer 3 engine Variants the Classic Cast Iron engine back from the 50s and the new UCE engine. The UCE engine that is mounted on the Thunderbird Twinspark and the Classic 350 has proven it self well on the TBTS and if it's a choice between the TBTS and the Classic it's toattaly personal and would depend on wheter you like the Tbird' cruiser look or the classic road bike look of the classic. Personally I like the classic.

The classic 500 you can consider if you re willing to spend that bit of extra money which in this case is a good 30 -35 aprox for which you will get a 27 BHP bike with FE and would be hassle free at any altitude you want to operate this bike at.

The Electra has the old Cast Iron engine which is smooth performer and has oodles of vintage value. But some people doubt it's reliabilty but I ve had an Electra for 6 years and it never gave me a cause to complain or let me down ever.

So to sumarise if you re going in for a 350 i would suggest you go for one of the UCE 350s i.e. TBTS or the classic depending on your choice of styling. Cos it's a modern engine and has proven itself well on the reliability front on the TBTS.

All the best for you new ride.

Confirm the cost of the Bullet Classic 500 in your city. If it falls in your budget or if u can increase it, then look no further. This bike will have to be the best Bullet yet!

On a side note, someone mentioned in some other bullet Classic thread the on road cost of Classic 500 to be 1,38,000rs in Delhi.

        Happy hunting!

I would suggest you the Bullet Classic. Test ride and check which one is comfortable for you.

The Thunderbird has a touring stance if you want to go on long rides and all. But for city/local use you could go with the classic. But all said its your choice which is final.

I can suggest one thing. I too am confused between various models. I was sure that I wanted CI engine. So I have 2 choices:
              Electra or Standard.
Went to the showroom and had a look at both, sat on them and then made the big mistake of kick starting the standard, first kick was for decomp & second kick and it started (it was my first time). Then I have no words, the sound touched my mind, body, heart & soul.
Will be booking the standard 350 in this week

Electra is good with TCI ignition, 5 speed left side gear box, electric start, disc brake but the standard kept pulling me into its web and it has indeed caught me

So I will suggest you to go to the showroom, check them out, have a test ride and then you can decide.

Also as standard is 82K on road and Electra is 98K, 16K difference is an issue for me.

              Wish me luck

              Thanks,
              Subu.

Took a test ride of TBTS

Thanks a lot guys for the replies.

I just came back from a long test ride of TBTS. My thoughts for it are -

                1) The bike's response was good.
                2) Had a lovely pick-up and did not vibrate much on high speeds.

I felt some small issues -

                1) My wrists pained a bit during city driving
                2) The driving posture was excellent (no back aches etc..) but the seats were not comfortable (as compared to Electra). Can something be done to make the seats softer for the pillon?
                3) The headlights are only 35W. Can it be increased to 60W?
                4) Felt some problem with gear change (false neutrals)

                Please advice.

                Regards,

i would suggest you wait for atleast 4 - 5 months until user reviews about the Classic 350 n 500 come up.
classic 350 n 500 do they have the twin spark plugs? or single spark plugs?

Classic 350 has exactly the same engine specs like Thunderbird and 500 has an EFI.

Yes, both are twin spark, AVL, UCE.

Well! I am 5' 7" and 59 kgs and I manage to ride one quite comfortably. In fact today rode a friend's bike which is a 1972 standard and felt just at home on it.

Classic 500 is 1,31,000 on-road delhi, I enquired this price from the RE Jhandewalan showroom, supposedly the best RE showroom in Delhi. I bought my Electra 5S from there around 3 years back.

Anyone looking for a TBTS should check out the new 350 Classic. The performance will not be very different from TBTS due to the same engine and specs, however, the 350 has 18inch, 110/90 section rear tyre along with front 19inch. So, the handling should be better than the TBTS, moreover, without doubt the Classic looks much better too in my opinion.

Classic 500 is a different animal And I am satisfied with the on-road price.

PS: Can non delhi residents please confirm the price of the bent silencer? The guy at Jhandewalan showroom in delhi says its rs3000!

@Satelite.kid - In bangalore the bent pipe for the 500 is Rs 3k and Rs 1600 for the 350. As per the company's flagship dealer.
