  • Sugesstion Needed :- Deciding a Bike for LEH

Hey Sorry to bother all you out here, but I in urgent need of help from all of you.
Something about me:- I stay in Mumbai, I am a casual rider, I own a Hero Honda karizma and Yamaha fz16. I ride Yamaha FZ16 daily for work and Hero Honda Karizma on weekends for pleasure. I have not been to many places on it, due to shortage of time and many more reasons. <br> I did ride my bike till Goa, Raigad fort, Pune and some nearby destinations on the outskirts of Mumbai.

The focal reason for writing is I am planning to go LEH coming June/ July /August.
    1) I would like to know which month would be the best for going to Leh.
    2) As I am not going alone, I have a friend who is keen to join me on the trip, but the problem is: - he is not a rider, and on this trip rarely he would be riding the bike. Now I would like to know is it possible to go from Mumbai to Leh with a pillion and if yes I would like you people to suggest me a bike (karizma / fz16).
    3) I weight 70kgs and My friend weighs 75kgs, so is it a good idea to take him on the trip or should I be blunt and day no to him.
    4) On the maximum how many days would it take and on an average how much the trip would cost.
    5) What are the other things that would be needed and what should I know about the bike that I would be riding (have read at many places, you need to know some mechanical work so that bike can be repaired) I have never done this, so I would like to know what are the basic that I should know.
    6) Approximately how many days the Trip will last and how safe is it.
    7) Any other input from all the people would be appreciated.

I know I am asking too many silly questions, too early. But to be on a serious note I have made up my mind that I want to go on the Magical Journey to leh on bike.

With all of yours expert inputs, the journey would be safe and worth remembering.

    Welcome to xBhp!

There are already threads running on the bikes needed to go to Leh. You can use the search feature to have a look.

    Approved Nonetheless
The Wheel was a great invention; Two Wheels with a Motor in between was even better!

For your two beloved Karizma is defiantly the Leh tool (Time Tested). Only it lacks is Tubeless Tyre which will sure come handy in place like Leh.

      Thats my personal view.

Following is my attempt to answer your questions Marked in red.

        1) I would like to know which month would be the best for going to Leh. (May-June will be the best month, as you will find great amount of snow & less water crossing AFAIK)
(My take would be on Karizma due to its comfort level for both, Rider & Pillion. But, you should also realize the fact about the amount of luggage you may carry. As Mumbai to Ladakh, the distance would be around 3300 kms approximate. So having a pillion. Rethink.!. It definately do-able no doubt, but more preparations & caution.)
        3) I weight 70kgs and My friend weighs 75kgs, so is it a good idea to take him on the trip or should I be blunt and day no to him. (I understand, its Not easy to 'Deny' a friend. But rather you make him realize how difficult its going to be & both come on a mutual conclusion)
        4) On the maximum how many days would it take and on an average how much the trip would cost. (I had taken 9 days to Reach Leh i.e. 1. Ahmedabad, 2. Kishangarh(Udaipur), 3. Delhi, 4. Chandigarh 5. Mandi, 6. Manali, 7. Pang (from here the Himalayas will start), 8. Darcha, 9. Leh. We where riding with leisure. No stressing out. Still the initial few days we rode for 500-600 kms per day as the roads where very nice. Later in mountains the distance covered per day reduced. I think it may cost around 12-15k or may be less. For us it costed around 25k, but it was To & Fro.)
        5) What are the other things that would be needed and what should I know about the bike that I would be riding (have read at many places, you need to know some mechanical work so that bike can be repaired) I have never done this, so I would like to know what are the basic that I should know. (Even none of knew any work apart from the basics. So do not worry, just make sure you bike is in perfect conditions. Get any major/minor problems fixed before the trip. Carry oil to top-up. For more info, read other threads. There are many more helpful & resourceful )
        6) Approximately how many days the Trip will last and how safe is it. (Even it was my concern about the Safety. But do-not worry, as someone told me, the same I will tell you. Its just any other road, but with more experiences, adventures & its new cause you will be coming across lot of places which are unseen & never imagined. Yes the roads are risky, but then its also in small places around us. You will be riding from all types of atmospheres. i.e. Summer, Sand, Mountains, Snow, etc.! Never let the hope die, and can do it easily. At times, you may fall sick due to Altitude sickness, but do not loose courage. Cause, the next morning you will be perfect. So patience is the key thing.)
        7) Any other input from all the people would be appreciated.
(Again, search other threads. They have almost many things covered)

        Hope this was helpful.

I would suggest you the karizma over the fz. It has more pulling power which is beneficial for the altitude.
