  • Upgrading from 100 CC to higher segment

    Hello Friends.

I am Dhwanit Trivedi from Ahmedabad. Currently I own a Caliber 115 and I want to upgrade to a higher segment (Preferably 150 cc)

Here is some of the information that would be helpful to the fellow members to help me choose the best option.

    1. Fuel efficiency should be respectable. (50 - 55 kmpl in mixed driving conditions)

    2. Long term reliability and durability. (Say the bike would be lasting atleast 4 to 5 years in a good & drivable condition without major overhauls of engine or replacement of body parts)

    3. Maintenance, service & spares should be available at ease and should cost as low as possible.

    4. It should provide a respectable performance and joy of riding.

    5. My most of the driving will be on highways, so I prefer a bike with an upright seating position.

    6. Sorry to Yamaha fans, but I have discarded the FZs and Fazers from the count as they cost more than the segment they are in (150 cc). So I prefer a P180 if I am suggested a Yamaha)

    7. My budget is 80 K INR.

    8. I prefer a bike with a digital speedo, however it is not a must.

    9. I can wait for a month or two more if any good models are to be launched till the Month of May.

    10. My height is 5' 8".

I have a few bikes on my mind like
    The Hero Honda Hunk
    The Suzuki GS 150 R
    The Pulsar Series (Both 150 & 180)

Please help me choose a bike that would be serve as an overall package to suit my requirements.

Suzuki GS150 for sure. You could also have a look at RTR 160.

If you have a budget of 80k and you want a upright sitting position you can also take a look at karizma-r

but how zma delivers 50-55kmpl mileage as the topic starter wants a reasonable mileage

I would suggest u to look after the unicorn which satisfies all ur requirements(expect digi console)

yesterday evening I had a test drive of the GS 150 and it was quite decent.

However when I read the GS150 Ownership threads, I found that the Mileage is inconsistent and there are some rust related issues. So I would like to know from the GS150 owner members whether this problem has been rectified in the new batch or not?

As far as the Uni is concerned, I believe that it needs an upgrade like other bikes in the 150 cc segment. It looks quite dated, else, I loved the engine & the performance.

Does anyone have any news or idea regarding HMSI upgrading the Unicorn or introducing the Sports Version of the Uni displayed in the Auto Expo held at Delhi?

the gs suits your requirement perfectly and the newer batch of bikes don't have rusting issues...

Gs150 or the new Pulsar 150 ug4.5 would surely be a better choice...
i too had same problems few days ago mate.i was not able to decide which bike i would updrade to from a 100cc bike which i was riding for 3 years
                      finally booked p180...
if you can compromise a bit on mileage u can go for p180...
test drive all the bikes and finally do what ur heart says..
                      all the best..

For all your above requirements GS 150 R is the answer. Trust me you won't regret gettin this beautiful machine. Its a pleasure to ride it on highways and also in the city.....Take a test drive and listen to what your heart says... Good Luck

By going through the replies, it seems that 90% of people suggest the GS.
Personally speaking I loved the ride of this machine. It was very responsive & refined.

However, what I observed in the GS is that the Stock Crash Guard at the front is not so wide. In fact the headlights and the Side Blinkers protrude out of the bike's crash guard. So would it be a risk to the headlight & the legs when one slips or is it just an illusion and the fact is that the guard is effective. GS owners please respond. I would also like to know what FE would I get because in the GS ownership thread, the FE mentioned are in very large ranges. Some say 42 and some say 65 !

Please respond soon as I am planning to book a Grey Colour of the GS, which is currently not in ready availability in any of three 3 showrooms in Ahmedabad.

Black & Blue are readily available. However, colour is not a preference as such as long as I can get Black or grey.

Thank you all for your suggestions.

What happens to R15/Karizma riders then? and what about SBK riders?
depend on knee pads/riding pants for protection and not crash-guard

                            All motorcycle's efficiency varies,
depends how you are riding it,

my motorcycle(not a GS) gives ~50kmpl as well as ~30kmpl, depends how i am riding and where i am riding

Seems Mr Sheelpriye felt offended by the query/comment regarding the Crash Guard.

Anyways, thanks a ton for your tip regarding the way to drive the bike. As such I have been driving my bikes since last 10 years, but I never knew this fact that the mileage depends on how one drives the bike .
