  • CB Twister (DRUM) or Splendour NXG (Alloy)

    Hello All
I am 35 years old. I weigh 76 Kgs and I am 5'7". I want to buy my first bike.
With an outlay of 50,000/-, I want to make a decision based on input from members' experience of their bikes and their own decision-making process.
I stay in Koramangala (Bangaloreans, pls note).

These are the foll bikes I am thinking of:
    -------------------------+-------------+
    NAME | PRICE (BLR) |
    -------------------------+-------------+
    Honda Twister (Drum,KS) | 51,000 |
    -------------------------+-------------+
    Splendour NXG | 45,000 |
    -------------------------+-------------+
    Passion + (alloy) | 50,000 |
    -------------------------+-------------+
    Passion Pro (base) | 52,117 |
    -------------------------+-------------+

    My Criteria:-
+ Price should be around 50,000
    + reliable, maintenance free
+ Should last in market for some time, I shouldn't have to run after parts
    + service network
    + comfortable
    + decent pickup
    + good brakes
+ Disc brake (nice to have)
+ Quick delivery (rules out some HH bikes and the Activa).
+ I am leaning towards a Honda as there is a Honda Service centre in Koramangala where I stay.

    My riding 'style':
    never crossed 40-50 Kph.
use clutch to disengage gears if I am not accelerating (even to coast).
I rode my friend's Pulsar 150 (1st gen) and found it a tad heavy. I rode a splendour + and it felt like an adolescent's toy.

    Why not Bajaj:
    poor attitude from service centres.
Everyone says engines get trashed after 4-5 years. (which I do not believe)
I am concerned supply of parts for older models will dry up.

    Why not Yamaha:
    Not many service centres.
Bikes meeting my budget are in no way better than Passion.

    Why not Activa:
I am worried about reports of frequent maintenance.
    I want large wheels ( = safety?)

Here are my observations and Qs:
Super Splendour and Glamour have same engines.
Splendour+ and Passion+ have same engines
Splendour NXG and Passion PRO have same engines.
Both Passion bikes have marginally larger rear tyres (compared to splendours): 3.00 x 18.
    Passion PRO has a 3.00x18 - 6PR / 62P tyre. Is this better than Passion +'s 3.00 x 18 - 6PR / 48P tyre?
Splendour NXG and CB Twister have 110mm rear drums. Is this an issue?
Some people say that a front DISC is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for the Twister? Your opinions? Can I live with a drum brake at front?
Will anyone with a Passion PRO BASE MODEL list features not found in a Passion PLUS (considering the price difference)?
I have heard poor reviews of the NXG from Splendour + owners, who are obsessed with resale value. Is NXG bad at all?
Passion has a wide seat. How do owners of NXG and Twister feel about their bikes' (narrow??) seats? Do they feel tired after riding their bikes for more than an hour?
Is the reaction from the TWISTER's kick start mild like a Splendour's?
Does the TWISTER carry a pillion rider comfortably?

My heart says: TWISTER, but my mind tells me to save money and go for the NXG. I know I need to pay more to get a bike with heft, unlike the joke the Splendour is.

    Thanks in advance.

    Topic Approved.

Hey Rapperswil, first off, welcome to xBhp. And what a lovely way to start participating on the forums. The way you have described your needs and requirements is the kind of detailed explanation that we want from members who are looking for any advise/ suggestions from fellow xBhpians.

Now, coming to the real agenda here, I would suggest you try and take a test ride of the CB Twister. Although, the other machines mentioned here are truly tried and tested in the market (Passion, Passion + and the NXG), but I feel the CB Twister really cuts the deal here. It's got everything - good mileage, decent power and torque (for it's category), it's comfortable and it also offers perhaps what the other three models sadly lack in this - the 100cc category - Style!
    :)

      ^^ I agree with Aryan.
CB Twister in this category is the complete package. In my opinion it has got everything that you have enumerated.

Hello sir. Though I am only 18 I know a thing or two abt bikes. If u want decent pickup then go for the twister. Opt for the high end model. You might have to stretch ur budget slightly for this. But I feel it is worth it. And in a city like bangalore or bengaluru(whatever!) u wont have any problem with service.....i hope.Disc brake is a boon many a times in case of urgent braking. And being a honda i expect it to be smooth as a butter.
Honda is an established company in India so u wont have problem with parts.

On the other the NXG lacks on the power side. It slow for quick pickup(like in an emergency situation). But definitely it will be way too better on fuel efficiency than the twister. Lean tires means less safe. My suggetion....stay away from this thing.

Passion has the same engine but fatter tires as u say. It has proved to be a reliable bike for a long time and needless to say HH has good service and parts avalibility is never a problem.

Coming to pillion seating. Twister has a sporty seating position. So women seating with both their legs on the same side will have problem. Passion will have no problem in this area.

Take a test drive of the passion and twister. I bet U'll fall for the Honda's silky smooth engine. Keeping fuel efficiency and piliion seating position choose between the two.

          And most importantly.....choose wisely!

            Thanks Everybody!

I happened to go to a Hero Honda showroom today. Apparently the prices I posted are from Hero Honda's site (which is wrong on many counts).

            PRICES:

            1. SPLENDOUR NXG with ELEC Starter + Cast wheels = 49,000.
            2. Passion Pro with Cast wheels + Elec Starter = 53,367.
            3. Passion Pro / Passion Plus with Cast wheels + Kick starter = 51,600.
            4. Glamour Drum Front brake + Cast wheels + Elec Starter = 55,100.
            5. Pleasure scooter = 43,653.

Here are some facts about the bikes:
            1. HH only offers Disk Brake for bikes above 150 CC even as an option. Thus the passion PRO's picture on HH's web site with disc brakes is misleading.

            2. Passion PRO (base model comes with cast wheels) and Passion + (with cast wheels) are the same except for stickers. There is a price diff of 300. There is nothing PRO about the Passion PRO.

Impressions after test-riding a Pleasure (SCOOTER).
+ I went to the show room on a colleague's Pulsar. You get the feeling that you are sitting on top of the wheels rather than somewhat between the wheels in a bike. It takes some getting used to, I believe.
+ Otherwise, it was the same as a Kinetic Honda

            Impressions after test-riding a TWISTER.
+ But for the pickup, the bike feels quite similar to a Pulsar. The pickup is somewhat slower.
+ Balance & poise were good.
+ Gear shifter can only be operated with toes.
+ cheap looking speedo and console. But overall an impressive alternative to the Passion.

            Cheers!
