  • Unicorn or GS150R

    Hi all,
    I am finally getting a 150cc bike.

I have shortlisted Honda Unicorn and Suzuki GS150R. I do not want to look at any other bike or any other make.

Honda Unicorn has been my favorite bike ever since I was in my school. I have always loved it's refined engine. I have always wanted that bike.

I rode the GS150 recently and liked it too.
There are some features that the GS150R has that I really like such as pilot lamps, gear indicator and engine kill switch.
My worry is with Suzuki's service network (I stay in Bangalore) and the bike's engine quality- there is a very irritating rattling from the engine area above 3500rpm and hear a lot of complaints about tank rusting, battery dying etc.

Now one of the reasons that prevent me from buying the Unicorn is my weight. I weigh over 130KGs. Will the Unicorn's mono-suspension and diamond frame cope with my heavy weight? Or is it prone to breakage when added a pillion at the back?

While the Unicorn appeals to my heart, the GS150R appeals to my head. Which is a better bike in terms of reliability and quality? And especially one that will suit me?

I would like to know about Suzuki's service in India too.

    Thanks
    Regards,
    Vignesh Giridharan

The Unicorn monoshock will not go anywhere! It will be fine.
The Wheel was a great invention; Two Wheels with a Motor in between was even better!

Unicorn is around for quite some time.

How about the upcoming "Dazzler".Do consider it and take a test ride before deciding on it.

Suzuki's service network (I stay in Bangalore)

^^^^That is not to worried about, rest assured I feel GS150R to be more value for money when comparing both Uni & GS150R.

Do not much worry about rusting Issue & all, even if it is then Suzuki does not mind replacing them if it is too bad & necessary, rattling noise from engine, I did not feel any when I test drove the bike..

Only bothering part would be the sluggishness in 0-60 range & from their it is pretty good & picks up speed neatly without any naatak.

yes, dont worry about the rust issues of gs 150 r, they are well taken care off, even if they occur in the new bike (100% impossible), they will replace the bike for you.
Secondly, You Almost Weigh more than most of the bikes out there, But GS 150 r is SUZUKI,the company which made the legendary hayabusa So dont doubt its capacity

Where gs 150 r is better than unicorn?
              1.Console
2.Looks (dont judge the looks by the pics or by FANISM over the internet, check it out in real)
3.6 Gears. Give you the ultimate smooth ride with vibe free drive even at 100+ kmph
4.Gearing is butter smooth as unicorn
5.This bike looks macho compared to unicorn n gives u 55+ mileage just like unicorn (gives better than unicorn depending on drivers performance)
6.Gs 150 R is 13.8 bhp compared to unicorn 13.3 and the worst part is both are 69k approx on road

only thing gs misses is the monoshock of unicorn, but in exchange u get the above positives .
About the engine sound. tht's the gs 150 r engine's sound. its unique, it doesnt give much irritating feeling though i took a test drive at 2 pm in 40 degree temperature in chennai LOL

The conclusion is .Unicorn is almost a flawless bike. and has been there for a lot of years.. gs is like 2 steps better than unicorn and it is out recently with added features.. so its your call

Trust me Man. I'm on the Bulkier Side. When i was planing to get my Bike. Doctors Adviced me not to get one as i have Back-pain Issues.

As per friends and Dad's Advice, Got the Unicorn. And with respect to the Weight managing and Capability and My Back-pain worries, I haven't regretted my decision. The vibe-free, back pain-free Bike for a Bulkier Person i would say! Haven't test-driven The GS but still i would suggest a Mono-SHock anyday!

The console and 6-speed on the GS looks tempting though

And one more point, If u're looking for Refinement, look no Further. Its the Unicorn! .
Thank Mr.Pfeiffer.. My dreams of owning a Four-Wheeled Beamer is halved now! :)

for refined smooth engine i'd go for the unicorn..

for the gadgetry and looks i'd get the gs150r..

i'd suggest u take a look at the cb dazzler before u decide on anything..

personally i'd get a honda but its all up to ur tastes and brand loyalty...

Dazzler or Unicorn, Which is easier for the city?

                      Thanks to all for replying.

After some more test-rides I have decided on Unicorn.
BUT, as advised by many, will wait for the Dazzler; compare Dazzler and old Unicorn to see which suits me better.
I am a big fan of the Unicorn mainly because it has a torque of 12.8Nm coming at an rpm as low as 5500revs. That makes it very easy to ride within the city.
The new Dazzler has a slightly higher torque rating but peak arrives only at 6500rpm. Will this make a difference in city riding?

                      Outgoing Unicorn: 13.3bhp @ 8000rpm | 12.8Nm @ 5500rpm
                      New Dazzler: 14bhp @ 8500rpm | 13Nm @ 6500rpm

Given above is the difference in figures. I hope it doesn't make me rev more to get the bike moving.

                      Please advise.

                      Thanks to all

                      Regards,

Yes I agree, Dazzler will create a threat for GS 150r, but the positive thing is that hopefully Suzuki will think to launch the GS 150r with a new look to face the competition.

Even Honda Agrees that the Old CB uni is for mature people and this is for youngsters. Any way Dazzler will surely be a Competitor to GS not sure about FZ still think it will beat it in looks.

Dazzler is more of a twister i should say(my opinion) and it looks smaller compared to Uni overall even its height has been reduced. If anyone has been fortunate enough to go for a test ride of this do post.

Yes but we have to wait and see as its too early to predict

Even in unicorn many mandatory items are called as accessory and charged
but in GS150R it comes as Free
moreover from the price point of view Dazzler is costlier by 6 K minimum

lets wait n see don't jump in to conclusion now

I would suggest you to wait for Honda Dazzler and decide.

Often people jump to conclusion and later regret for their quick decision, don't ever let that happen.

Do home work, read the forum threads, talk to couple of owners for their experience with the bike. Analyze short comings of the bike and do take the points match to your expectations to decide.
