  • Looking for a bike for Mumbai traffic

    Hello xBhp'ians,

    This is my first post and I agree , its quite a unique (weird) one.

    I have been offered a posting in Mumbai after my stint in the UK and I am keen on buying a new bike for myself. Although I would be using the local train for travel to & from office, I wanted a bike for other purposes like :

    * Weekend travel/touring
    * grocery commuting
    * meeting and roaming around with friends in the city

    I have had a Pulsar180 UG III before and I loved the grunt in it. Now my options are :

    1.) Pulsar 220 DTSi-F
    2.) Pulsar 180 Dtsi UG IV
    3.) Honda Dio

    Since the past 3 weeks, I have been driving my mother's TVS Scooty in the city of Bangalore and its been an absolute bliss to squeeze through tiny traffic voids and zoom away. I am confused between a power monster (P220 F), an all-rounder (180 UG4) or the easy commuter for Mumbai's traffic purposes (Dio).

    For those who have the experience of riding in Mumbai, can you please help me decide. Although my touring is not too often, I would still relish to have a P220 in my garage. I am worried that its not exactly a commuting bike and that I might regret not going for a Dio. Perhaps a slight compromise on both sides and a Pulsar 180 UG 4 may be a better option ?? Please help me decide on this .

    Thanks,
    Manju

      IMHO P220 would be over-kill for commuting specially in Mumbai. While Dio is a zippy and convenient option, you will not be able to take it out on the longish rides you intend to do with your friends on the week-ends.

      P180 UG4 would be the best option for you. Enough power to zoom ahead of the traffick and for going out on the week-end getaways. And it has great fuel economy and lower maintenace comapred to P220.

      In any case, let us know what you decide.

        Thanks NH4.

        I was hoping the same too. But compared to the P180 UG3 , has the decrease in torque (despite the power increase) affected the performance of the Pulsar ?? Torque is one of the main plus points of the P220 and I see that you are a proud owner of the P180 UG4, so how do you rate that bike for Mumbai ? How is the P180 UG4 for touring compared to the P220 (which I hear is fantastic for touring) ?

            if you are fine with 150 ccs, then FZ is not bad either. In fact it will be great bike for city riding. Courtesy lower and middle end torque of the trusted Yamaha engine. It is so so effortlessly drivable in traffic.. but in case you are fine with 150 ccs

              If at all there is a decrease in Torque in P180 UG4, then it is hardly noticeable. If you compare aspects of P180 UG4 to a P220, then P220 is a sure winner. (Except may be for the Fuel Economy and Maintenance). P220 is full of delight and superb for touring, but are you seriously going to use it that way?

              My vote still goes for a P180 for riding in and out of Mumbai. And it is not only because I own one myself.

              As someone has said below, FZ16 might also be a good bike for you, provided you always ride without a pillion and don't like to overtake big vehicles on the high-ways.

                speakfree2mk: From the options you have given... I would say go for the Pulsar 180...

                If you can build a nice rack and pannier for your bike it will be good for your grocery shopping

                    My opinion goes to P180. I feel even Yamaha FZ is good. It has a decent average of 40-45 kmpl. Just get a test ride and see which bike are you comfortable with.
                    Ride Hard !!! Ride Safe!!! Enjoy every moment on your machine !!! Cheers....

                      Thanks so much you all.

                      I have almost decided on the P180 UG4. However, I was going through some other threads on xBhp and I happened to read another blog which added another bike and a little more confusion to the list It's the Karizma-R. How do you compare the ZMA-R to P180-Ug4 in the Mumbai'esque driving conditions ?

                      Also, I had another small query. All my life in India, I have lived in Bangalore and I dont have any address proof for a bike purchase in Mumbai. Do you think that I will be able to buy a bike in Mumbai with my passport alone ? Or Can I buy a bike in Bangalore and then move to Mumbai without any much further legal hassles ?

                      Thanks,
                      Manju

                          why dont you consider p220 S ( non faired ) . it have roughly silimar footprint of p180 but with power of a 220.

                          karizma , i dont think its a good choice for city riding. may be if you decide to commute to office by bike then its worthy , but not now

                              Thanks Addy. But I test rode the RTR180 and I felt the vibes were a bit too much for me to handle. But I do agree, that the feel and the raw power is really tempting.

                              Can you guys help me out on the other query of mine
