  • Hello - Bitten by the Duke 200

    Hi Fellas,

I am Tausif , residing in Bangalore (near IIMB) & have been a long standing (silent) member reading thoroughly enjoying articles on xbhp. Was bitten by the "bike" bug when the ktm duke 200 was released & ever since wanted to pick it up. The biggest challenge - had never ridden a geared motorcycle & most of the threads on xbhp said not to go for a 200 cc bike if you are new to biking.
It's been more than a year & i kept reading articles on the duke 200 & then 390 etc hoping some day i'd pick it up. Finally, was tired of doing nothing, got into action, exchanged my Activa with my friend for his bike so that I could practice it . After couple of weeks of riding his bike (Yamaha Libero) to work & back (approx 30 kms), I feel pretty confident I can take a strike at the duke 200.(ideally I would go for the 390 , with those metzeler tires, abs etc its a sweet deal, but that really would be too much to handle for me , dont you think so)

Any opinions? Should I pick up the 200 now? or practice a bit more on a more powerful bike to which i dont have access to :P? Please do not recommend me to buy another bike (no offense to other bikers) as the only reason I wanted to get into biking was because of the duke 200.
Thanks Guys. Would appreciate your inputs.

    Cheers,
    Tausif

Go for the 200 if you are so much in love, since you have had your hands on a geared bike and you feel confident enough the duke would be fine. Just take it a little easy initially, get used to the seating position, brakes, the way the bike accelerates etc and it would be fine.

The 390 is a good bike but I would only advise one had you ridden a smaller capacity bike for some time, its not because of the expertise required, after all a lot of riders outside india do start with similar powered bikes but I am saying this because you are used to riding comfortable 2 wheelers. By this I mean, soft shocks, easy on the wrists, shoulders, neck and back. The duke 390 is a little extreme not because of the riding stance but because of its immense power and hard shocks. The duke 200 itself is plenty powerful and you coming from an activa would be satisfied with the power for quite some time. The duke 200 is a better city bike because of gearing that allows it to potter in 6th doing a lazy 30kmph, in case of 390 forget the 5th and 6th inside city. In short the 200 is less taxing on the body as well as the pocket (expect real world economy of 20-25kmpl from the 390 )
Go for the duke 200 you can always get the Metzelers later.

        Hey Tausif,

        Welcome to Xbhp...

I think you got your answer ^^^ already, I just wanted to add that you can take test ride of both of them and then decide.

If I were at your place, I would select Duke 200.....
        KTM RC390 - Current
        Yamaha R15 v2 - Sold
        Hero Hunk - Sold
An IT Engineer by profession and a rider by soul.

The Monk - Thank you. Have had an awesome time reading articles on this forum & hopeful I can add value sometime later.
DukeDey & Vini - Guess what ... I bit the dust. Just ccame back home after booking the Duke 200 (got the white color ) Super excccited & just waiting to get my hands on it. Paid the full amoutn so shld be ready in couple of days is what I am told.. Agree with you guys that the 390 would have been an overkill for me. My next steps are to buy a good helmet , jackets & gloves. Cheers & have a great day !
Once I get the bike , will write a followup on my experience with the showroom folks.

Showroom folks hardly have any clue about what they talk about. Just to be able to talk to the customer they just blurt out whatever they feel like.
Here they are talking about the superduke when they don't even know the confirmed delivery dates for the homegrown duke 390. Always take their words with a fist full of salt.
