• Hi All! Bengaloorean Vivek here

Hello fellow XBHPians! This is Vivek from namma Bengaluru. I am making a comeback to riding after almost a 10 year hiatus. During my teenage, I used to love my rides more than anything. Still remember those days when I waited for my dad to head out of home so that I could sneak his lambretta scooter out to the open. As soon as I turned 18, the first thing I did was to get my driving license. Due to my dad's "Hamara Bajaj" mentality, I was strictly denied a motorbike and only allowed to get a Bajaj Chetak. I was completely averse to getting a Chetak as I never liked it (side engine, spring seats, weird looks and all) and somehow convinced him to get me a Lml Vespa. That was one great buy and I loved the power and handling of the same.

After I joined a job and started earning, I purchased the Pulsar 150 and had a good couple years with that. The engine became rough after the two years and the ride was also not that stable. But during those two years, I did a lot of riding with my then girlfriend now wife. We not just used that for daily commute but toured quite often on weekends. After marriage, I moved to the US of A and away from bikes to cars. The five year stay in US and the consulting business that I am into, allowed me to experience wide range of cars and turned me to a car enthusiast.

After moving back to India, never really felt great about the kind of cars available here (on a budget). I currently own a less than year old Toyota Innova which accommodates my large family adequately. My everyday drive is about 50 odd km (up/down) and I have been feeling kind of guilty whenever I lug a seven seater car alone around the town. So now looking for riding options available in the market. Want to move past the budget/commuter 150cc bikes and get a bike which can seat my wife/kids comfortably as well. Being more of a safe rider/driver at the current age, not that keen on sports bikes. Hence the choice comes down to Royal Enfield bikes. Have been riding a brand new Classic 500 bike for the past fortnight loaned to me by my cousin and loving every moment of it. However, I am still weary of RE build quality and contemplating between Thunderbird 350 and 500.

I know that this has been a very long post, that too for a first one; its just that I am excited to be a part of the forum and the enthusiasm is overflowing as words. Hope you all don't mind.

Bikes Owned Previously: Lambretta (dad's), LML Vespa Select, Yamaha RX 100(Tried restore but didn't turn out great due to mechanics incompetance), Bajaj Pulsar 150
Ride: Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500 Lightning

Hi Vivek,

Personally to me, Kids on a two-wheeler is a big no-no. Either you have to seat him/her between you both and poor things gets his life squeezed everytime you apply brakes, or have to seat him on the tank which is more risky due to the debris flying from the moving vehicles in front of you.

If is you and your better half alone, and if you can extend you budget, go for HD 750(maintenance is on the higher end and spares arent cheap too), REs build quality is not upto the mark when compared to other motorcycles. You ll have to live with the vibes part 80 kmph and worse vibrations at 60 kmph. I drive a CL500 myself for the past 16 months. I have enjoyed every bit of it and still love the torquey machine.

But few things i am starting to notice is , the welds around the engine mount is starting to get rust, the triple trees, saree guard, the shock absorber mount is all accumulating rust. No matter what i do, try to keep it clean , wipe of the water, still it does. A big problem was, I felt it very difficult to manouever in B2B traffic due to its weight.

TB500 is a really nice bike to drive around city and on highways.

Hi Vivek, welcome to xbhp.
I second thse above post. Go for a Tb. It'd satisfy your touring needs. You can also wait for the faired Inazuma. Fact is, we don't have many good choices in cruisers here. So, choose patiently within the limited options.

Divya Sharan - Thanks for the approval.
Karthik - I agree with you on the kids part. However, my kids would get a ride only for distances lesser than 3km or maybe for school rides once in a while. Rusting is something that I can deal with, but more worried about parts failure and engine related work. It is pretty difficult to find mechanics who work on a RE let alone an expert mechanic.

krishna77 - Prefer naked bikes over faired ones. Pulsar CS400 looks interesting but the wait for its launch will be an overkill (maybe 2016 launch).

Hello Vivek welcome. Why not consider Bullet STD 500? Very comfortable and less hassle free as RE efi bikes have loads of fuel pump complains. Needless to say, the old world Bullet charm and tag automatically comes with STD 500

Hi Vivek,
Welcome to the club, sir.
Buy a RE only if you are ready to face the niggles and hassles that come with it.
Rusting is the least of your worries. Make sure you dont regret your decision.
Ride safe.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

I test rode the Bullet 500 today and found it to be quite good. Even the sales folks at the showroom recommended it saying its one of their favorite RE's. However, I had a passion of owning cruiser style bikes and liked the refined behavior of TB500 over the Bullet which is too much old school in my opinion. I understand that the features of TB such as digital console, fuel meter etc. are not very functional but for mile crunching it offers the best comfort. I wish the TB500 also came in a carburetor version sans the EFI/ECU, but it is what it is and hence I decided to go with the same. Made the payment today for the Lightning color and expected delivery is on Friday if not tomorrow. Issues if any will have to be dealt with and have prepped up my mind for it.
