    Quite the contrary my friend.

India is plagued by a parasite known as ARAI. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automo...ation_of_India

They are a regulating body, which allow or reject the sale of automobiles. They have this weird rule that no motorcycle below 800cc can be imported fully built. It can be imported only by a manufacturer, and that too in kit form(completely knocked down), which has to be assembled in a manufacturing plant in India. So that leaves us at the mercy of a manufacturer selling them. And then tere is a duty scenario. For every CKD imported, the manufacturer has to pay a duty of 60%. So effectively, a 10K $ bike is 16K$.

And for bikes exceeding 800cc, the ARAI allows import as Completely Built Up units(CBU). But the import duty is 110%. So, for instance, a Hayabusa which costs 15K in USA, costs about 30K $ in India(manufacturers are allowed to quote their build price, as opposed to retail price, so it comes to around 13K $ announced + 110% = 28K $, and shipping charges, so all in all, it is around 30K US $)

And then there is the issue of the paperwork. If you yourself decide to import a vehicle, you are either at the mercy of the middlemen, or you can literally waste weeks running from pillar to post. From office to office. From one clearance to another.

And for cars, its even tougher, which I will elaborate some time later.

Yes, bureaucratic hurdles are there, but in the end, money talks, just like in all of South Asia. :P

Seriously though, there are protectionist measures for local industries, but as India opens up its markets as it increases its involvement in global trade, things will begin to change.
