  • CobaltĀ® My first set of wheels!

So the story starts on a gloomy day in the August of 2018. It was a boring day as I picked up an auto magazine at the library of my school and was reading it. I had almost gotten bored (mostly coz I had already read all stories on Team BHP way back), and there it was, a first drive review of this new sporty 125cc scooter with lots of goodies. I instantly grew a liking to it just by seeing the photograph but after some oohs and aahs and dreaming about getting one in the future, I dismissed it since I thought it would be too expensive a thing and the boring, lazy day went on.

Cut to me just after my last board exam outside my exam centre, celebrating after 15 days of what can only be called rigorous labour and the thought again came to my mind. I had turned 16 so I could legally get a non geared 2 wheeler license. I had even learned to ride one back in October and all else needed to keep me happy was a scooter! So the hunt began

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
    The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

      Finding my obsession

So even before looking at anything, I had decided that I will not even look at Honda since literally everyone has an Activa and horror stories of A.S.S treating customers poorly had discouraged me. Additionally, Honda didn't truly have anything new to offer and I felt that most of their products were overpriced.

Hero was another manufacturer which was rejected by myself because of Quality Control issues and the simple fact that all their designs looked weird! I still call the Maestro Edge a Zombie(no offence to owners) purely because of how the taillights look!

Yamaha was the next one to go out the door. I am a huge fan of Yamaha bikes but scooters? Nah. They just didn't bring anything distinct to the table and the designers seemed overexcited while designing their products! Still, huge respect to Yamaha and the R15 will definitely make it to my shortlist if and when I get a bike.

Vespa was outrightly rejected because of the ridiculous pricing which didn't seem VFM from any angle.

By this time, I had done immense research and narrowed down to these 4 options-
      Suzuki Access 125
      TVS Jupiter
      Aprilia SR125/150
      TVS Ntorq

      Scooter Games

So one fine weekend, I decided to Test Drive all of the shortlisted options. First up was TVS being the nearest to my house.

First Visit(Avian TVS, Gotri, Vadodara)- By the time I reached the showroom, it was around 8:15 PM and Test Drives were not available. There were only 2 people in the showroom and one SA greeted us and took us to their display piece to explain all features. We initially looked at the Jupiter and then at the Ntorq. The SA for some reason was pushing for the Jupiter drum brake variant since "The bite of disc brake is too hard and unsafe". Took the brochure and left.

      Experience- 7/10

Second Visit(Viraansh Suzuki, OP Road, Vadodara)- This was a newly opened dealership and I didn't expect much but I was pleasantly surprised. The showroom was spacious and modern and had some people in it unlike TVS. We enquired about the Access and an SA was promptly assigned to us. He patiently showed us both, the Burgman and Access and explained us the variants. However, I couldn't take a TD as they didn't give any after 8 PM.

      Experience-9/10

Third Visit(Arsh Suzuki, Chhani, Vadodara)- One fine weekend, I had an event to attend early in the morning and one it got over, we had some free time on our hands so we went to the nearest Suzuki dealer who again promptly offered a TD. Their demo scooter was discharged and required some effort by the showroom guys to start up. TD was pretty straightforward and since it was early morning, I could test some of its capabilities very well(if you know what I mean). Same procedure after that, took a brochure and left. Off topic but there was a white Hayabusa in the showroom that had me drooling!

      Experience-9/10

Fourth Visit(Zummerwala TVS, Chhani, Vadodara)- After the Access we went to TVS which is right next door. Asked for a TD and the SA took out both the Ntorq and the Jupiter out. Here, I did one huge mistake- taking the Ntorq for a spin first. After experiencing all that power, the Jupiter obviously felt underpowered.

      Experience-8/10

By this time, I dropped the Aprilia from the shortlist altogether since I realised it will be too impractical(thus defeating the point of a scooter) and too expensive for what it ultimately offered so it was only between the Ntorq and the Access now.

After this, for the next 7 days, I went back and forth on the decision but in the end decided to go for the Ntorq since I didn't want to regret my purchase later. So it was decided! But I still wanted a final TD to seal my decision and I was fully convinced after taking one!

      The D-day

So now since it was decided, we went to Avian TVS on the 13th and after a final TD, asked the SA to proceed with the formalities. When asked about the colour of choice, I told them about blue but here's the shocker- The SA lied to us that the blue colour has been discontinued and told me to choose from their matte red demo or wait a week for the white and grey.

Since they clearly lied, I had no intention now of conducting business with them and straightaway called Zummerwala motors on the spot and luckily they had the blue in stock so headed there at once. Now I didn't know they won't be much better but I will narrate that later. So finally I bought it from Zummerwala Motors and so here goes the review.....

So the front is designed with an emphasis on the headlamp and is structured like that. Although not to everyone's tastes, it does offer a huge amount of presence on the road. Combine that with the beautiful Blue paint and you have admirers at every traffic signal!

Going further up, the handlebar cowl is heavily inspired from the SR Twins with indicators flanking the bottom ends of both the sides. The centerpiece here is the black panel with a SmartXonnect decal and an indian flag motif just besides. Looks cool and inculcates a sense of pride in buying a Made In India, Made by India product!
