After almost a month of planning and discussions, the D Day finally arrived, on 13th of February, Trivandrum witnessed its first ever “Helmet awareness ride/campaign” . It was on January 16th that our eldest member jayamohan bro started his first ride with xBhp . Though only 5 of us were there for that, we enjoyed it a lot. We discovered an enthusiastic hardcore biker in him before long and it was while retuning, he put forward the suggestion to organize such a ride to make people aware of importance of helmet after seeing lots of lidless riders driving recklessly on the road. Then we started discussing it on the thread and called up a beach g2g move it on further into practical terms. We all had 3 questions in front of us where, when and how. So it called for frequent g2gs. The initial step was taken by Jayamohan ,the time and date and it was fixed as 13-Feb-2010 to be D-day. The initial momentum kicked us all in a very motivate manner .
So on the following days, we approached the assistant commissioner of traffic , Mr Ragesh kumar to seek permission for such a ride inside the city involving so many bikers. First he asked all the details about us and immediately gave us a green signal for our initiative. Our member Balaji had drafter the letters to be given along with the route map, seeing everything being done in a very systematic manner, he was pretty impressed and promised us support from all sides. The traffic police here are trying in all possible ways to impose the ‘helmet for all’ rule hardly with little success. In addition to that, some fools also conducted anti helmet campaign too in the city few months back :P.So he was very happy to see atleast a few people caring for their lives as well as other’s. Thus the first barrier is crossed.
ACP Ragesh Kumar
As we planned to start the ride from the surrounding of kowdiar palace, of the erstwhile travancore king, in the royal hands even now, ACP asked us to approach the royal family for a royal flag off.. Jayamohan bro was very happy on hearing it coz he knows the prince Adithya Varma very well. He directly headed off to the palace to see him and presented before him our plans. He whole heartedly welcomed our initiative and agreed to flag off. In spite of his busy schedules , he spared an hour for us. Thus the second barrier also crossed.
By that time we collected all the articles we have to put in our pamphlet to be distributed to public and our graphic designer sudeep (2fazt4ya) designed it and got it printed. The g2gs after that had a lot of active participations including many new members and very old members . It was when we came t the dress code, we thought about the xbhp tees. Immediately we collected the money and ordered for it, but everything wont be right all the time right? Unfortunately we couldnt sport it as the shipping is taking its time here in india!! Finally we decided to go with black tees . When the guys started talking about the media buzz for the event, sidharth confirmed the coverage by ‘The Hindu’, as his relative was the chief editor here. Then came the next newbie Noel , who himself is a journo also helped us with some more media buzz and agreed to be the official photographer for the event with his D50. Before the final stages of preparations, some guys also approached the FM stations who broadcasted the details of the ride and whereabouts even from 12th !!

Thus the D Day arrived and we expected a bunch of around 25 bikes , but ended up with almost 34 bikers decorating the roads of trivandrum. Two xbhpians , ranjith and swaroop also accompanied us driving down all the way from cochin for the campaign. In the last moment our member Wish came along with Joe and Hari with their smoker and doper a.k.a RD350 and NINJA250 ,adding colour to the existing flock, which was also their first offline meeting with trivandrum xbhpians even though they were online members for a very long time. By the time they reached , we headed to the palace for the royal flag off. Junior Jayamohan Welcomed the ACP and Prince Adithya varma with roses and we started the official ceremonies with a small sweet distributions. After an interacting session with the media . All the camera eyes were focussed on the green Monster. The flagging off took place.Lijo was asked to lead the group, which he did flawless. The ACP was generous enough to provide us with 2 Escort vehicles to pilot and trail us .after almost 4 hours on the roads riding and distributing the 3000 pamphlets in 4 pit stops, we reached our final destination, shanghumugham beach to mark the ending of our first ever "Ride for a cause" . We saw a mixed response from the people on the road but we are hoping for atleast a 1% change in the mindset of people about safety and effective usage of safety gears.
Junior Jayamohan welcoming the prince..
On behalf of xBhp, i thank one and all who took part in this campaign and encouraged us directly or indirectly for this to happen and making it a big success. Thanks to all the readers who went through the whole story, simply could not resist to pen down the whole event from the start till end and hence took a little time.Last edited by VarunRTR; 02-14-2010, 11:11 PM.My New Blog : http://ridesaferidelong.blogspot.com/
