Default Riding Gears

I started riding when I was 15 and I am now 59....I became aware of the Helmet only in the 80s, through a friend who was into racing, and realized it's Value...I bought my first helmet in the 80s and it is still with me..It is a Simpson make Helmet.I started using it at a time when Helmets were not compulsory and people used to ask me why I am wearing it,is it because of fashion ,or I am taking part in Races ,or trying to show off ? I used to patiently explain each time....the reason..?
I had met with many accidents due to speeding in city and not being able to judge the other road user's moves...every time i will had bleeding injuries to my palm, elbows, knees and hips(no body protection at that time)..but every time my Helmet saved my head from going to smithereens. No individual component of a safety gear is as important as a Helmet.
No amount of emphasis is enough in making the Helmet mandatory..Helmet has a purpose.....It is there to safeguard the Skull and the brain within....to prevent Death and to prevent people becoming a Vegetable through brain injury.

Well still the sad part is that people just don't understand, they see so many accidents on the road, still no fear is entering into their mind, wonder how that is possible. Heck, i'm in a situation where i cant convince my parents to get me protective gear, even if i stress its advantages.I'm not earning yet, so i'm saving my pocket money for it myself,as of now its still a far reach but ill get it eventually.
Some buy great helmets alright , but just put it on the tank or hook it on the RVM's, its just for avoiding the police they say, no matter how much explanation gets into their head to realize that its better to put it on to save their sorry ass head.Weird breed of people we have here in India.

Sad indeed, I had also noticed with many riders in Chennai the same thing....Why don't you ask for raise in monthly allowance ,what with cost of everything increasing,a guy got to have something to put into his pocket ...and Petrol price going high ...and save up to get your head gear...don't go for cheap ones..less than a 1,000/- .... and go for a full face Helmet. It saves your face totally if you should fall(God forbid) and you don't need to have early Dinner of Flies in late evening drives.

lol..!! Yeah, People wear helmets that has lost it inner padding and dont even put on the clip. So in effect hey have put on a helmet but it gives no protection at all.
About price rise and allowance thats all i have to say,
+1 on the full face helmet thing.I myself have half faced one and i rarely use it that way.

Talking my experience

reading through whole thread i can't stop myself to share my personal experience..i got into college last year & the bus service & even the condition of the buses are really poor..it took more than an hour to complete a distance of 23 kms(my college distance).buses could stop anywhwere due to overheating of engine or any other failure.me & one of my friend go together to college.we both decided to convince our parents to buy us a mutual bike so that we can use it for the college purpose..but they refused by saying that buses are more safe than bikes.i explain them that it dosen't take a splendor or a luxury sedan to put you in trouble..but they just refused even when buses consume a lot of time..it is also b'coz they are not aware of proper riding gear.events for awarness of proper riding must be organized even in small cities & towns..

There are thousands of accidents happening every day that involves motor cycles. Yet why do majority of the riders hate wearing a helmet. Why do riders use cell phones while riding. Cells phones would either be stuck inside their helmets or if they don't have a helmet, it would be balanced between their shoulder and ear.

Reading through this thread, I am reminded of things that I have seen on the road.

The most horrendous motorcycle accident I have ever seen was when I was in Hyd, in 2007. On my way to office. Location: Sanath Nagar railway over bridge. A rider was lying spread eagled on his back. No helmet. Skull split open. It was a hit-and-run.

One of my colleagues was thrown over from a fly over (also in Hyd, Patny flyover) after his bike was hit from behind by a car. He was wearing a helmet. But did not have the strap clasped. Died on the spot.

Another one (also in Hyd, Hitec City-KPHB Colony road, 11.30 pm), I was returning home from work. A Pulsar zipped past at around 90 kmph (our cab was doing 80). A few metres ahead, he slipped in a deep rut in the road and slid 20 metres onward on his side along with the bike. Even our cab hit the rut quite hard, as the rut was difficult to see. Our driver did not stop. So we had to demand him to stop. Luckily, the Pulsar guy was alive. One side of his helmet was totally gone. It was of good quality. Otherwise, the helmet could have broken into pieces with the impact. The helmet saved his life.

Recently, I saw another one, here in TVM. A guy was crossing the NH 47 on his bike at a junction near Techno Park. Wham... he was hit on his right side by a speeding Honda City. He was thrown onto the bonnet and his head hit the wind shield with such force that the wind shield broke and went inside.

There were incidents where my room mates and I had run out in the dead of the night, after hearing loud screeches, thuds and crashes on the NH 47. We had had to call ambulances and the police, to save those people. Some where found to be drunk.

Simple precautions like wearing seat belts and wearing helmets prevent people from getting killed.

We know that thousands of bikers die in road accidents.
But many people die by getting hit by bikes.
Two days ago, at Kazhakootam Jn a pedestrian was hit by bike. He was walking by the side of the road. He was seriously injured and passed away on the way to the hospital.
The biker ran off as soon as the incident happened.
God...I wish that biker would be caught. He must learn a lesson.

Simple precautions like looking before crossing the road could have helped this one.. Especially since the Honda City was speeding on a 'National Highway' and the bike guy was crossing it.
