There are thousands of accidents happening every day that involves motor cycles. Yet why do majority of the riders hate wearing a helmet. Why do riders use cell phones while riding. Cells phones would either be stuck inside their helmets or if they don't have a helmet, it would be balanced between their shoulder and ear.

Reading through this thread, I am reminded of things that I have seen on the road.

The most horrendous motorcycle accident I have ever seen was when I was in Hyd, in 2007. On my way to office. Location: Sanath Nagar railway over bridge. A rider was lying spread eagled on his back. No helmet. Skull split open. It was a hit-and-run.

One of my colleagues was thrown over from a fly over (also in Hyd, Patny flyover) after his bike was hit from behind by a car. He was wearing a helmet. But did not have the strap clasped. Died on the spot.

Another one (also in Hyd, Hitec City-KPHB Colony road, 11.30 pm), I was returning home from work. A Pulsar zipped past at around 90 kmph (our cab was doing 80). A few metres ahead, he slipped in a deep rut in the road and slid 20 metres onward on his side along with the bike. Even our cab hit the rut quite hard, as the rut was difficult to see. Our driver did not stop. So we had to demand him to stop. Luckily, the Pulsar guy was alive. One side of his helmet was totally gone. It was of good quality. Otherwise, the helmet could have broken into pieces with the impact. The helmet saved his life.

Recently, I saw another one, here in TVM. A guy was crossing the NH 47 on his bike at a junction near Techno Park. Wham... he was hit on his right side by a speeding Honda City. He was thrown onto the bonnet and his head hit the wind shield with such force that the wind shield broke and went inside.

There were incidents where my room mates and I had run out in the dead of the night, after hearing loud screeches, thuds and crashes on the NH 47. We had had to call ambulances and the police, to save those people. Some where found to be drunk.

Simple precautions like wearing seat belts and wearing helmets prevent people from getting killed.

We know that thousands of bikers die in road accidents.
But many people die by getting hit by bikes.
Two days ago, at Kazhakootam Jn a pedestrian was hit by bike. He was walking by the side of the road. He was seriously injured and passed away on the way to the hospital.
The biker ran off as soon as the incident happened.
God...I wish that biker would be caught. He must learn a lesson.

Simple precautions like looking before crossing the road could have helped this one.. Especially since the Honda City was speeding on a 'National Highway' and the bike guy was crossing it.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.
