Not sure about other manufacturers, but in case of Bajaj bringin step thru is not as easy as making Boxer 150, coz, they have everything ready to make Boxer150. If they want to bring step thru, they have to go through the product cycle, which costs them a lot compared to Boxer 150, for which everything is already there. Take engine from disco 150.. tune it for boxer 150.. viola, you have a bike for rural folk.

Default Bajaj Boxer BM150 launched at a price of INR 43,000 ex-showroom Pune.

Bajaj Boxer BM150 launched at a price of INR 43,000 ex-showroom Pune.

Bajaj Auto has launched the Boxer BM150 utility bike. The launch was expected to take place on August 19 but, Bajaj decided to quietly launch the bike away from the media glare. We even brought you exclusive insider information about the launch and the bike itself. The bike is targeted at the rural customers who have been deprived of a tough utility bike for years. In past, this was not the case. Other bike makers were offering products in this segment.

The new bike from Bajaj will fill in the void left by the Yezdis and Rajdoots of the world. Bajaj Auto has also priced the new Bajaj Boxer BM150 at a very reasonable Rs 43,000 ex-showroom Pune. What Bajaj has done this time is come up with a crude 150 cc bike with better torque and power which has the ability to carry heavy loads. A high payload capacity is what most customers in rural areas want from their vehicles. It could either be for carrying produce to the markets or for ferrying passengers.

For 43,000 rupees, you get a tough bike with a 150 cc engine that has better fuel economy compared to the fancy, expensive bikes of today. The 100 cc engine of the old Bajaj Boxer has been swapped for a 150 cc unit without Bajaj’s DTSi technology. Thus, its a standard 150 cc engine that is tuned to deliver more power and torque for lugging cargo. Bajaj has compromised fuel efficiency for power when compared to the 100 cc Boxer.

Bajaj Auto expects to see sales of the bike pick-up in the rural areas than in urban, developed parts of India. The bike has been built keeping in mind the rural customers needs and offers carrying racks etc. The design too is not that bad and gets a plastic cowl over the round headlight. The suspension too seems to have been raised a bit to accommodate heavy loads.

Default Bajaj Boxer BM150 launched at a price of INR 43,000 ex-showroom Pune.

Pricing

43,392 Ex showroom
1196 Insurance
3217 RTO
350 Smart Card
48,155 On Road Pune

Important Points

- The bike is powered by a 150cc engine sans DTSi ie with a conventional single spark plug. Engine head is black colored with the remaining engine silver in color – resembles the Discovers mill.
- According to Bajaj, Boxer is targeted towards the rural crowd who want a no-frills good torque laden transport two wheeler
- Very conventional looking bike
- Round headlamp with a big (and a little disproportionate) windshield, round-oval orange side blinkers, basic tank, leveled seat, metallic grab rail cum light load holders
- Rear looks similar to older generation Boxer with a similar tail light
- Covered chain, commuter seating posture, spoke wheels.
- One good thing about Boxer is that self starter comes as standard. Also provided is the all important kick starting provision.
- Drum brakes both at the front and rear to keep costs under control. Though discs might have been an added advantage in most cases but considering the usage and riding habits of the targeted crowd, this seems to be a sensible move.
- Instrument panel consists of a speedometer calibrated till 140 kmph (reddened from 120 kmph) – highly optimistic..I don’t think it would have any crazy acceleration or top speed, odometer and a fuel gauge along with the neutral gear, upper and side blinkers indicators. Notice the absence of any tripmeter.
- Weighs low
- Electricals are all conventional with the light dependent on engine race. Also it was a little dim and difficult to read speedo-odo readings.
- Switchgear is all basic- light On/off switch (no parking light), electric starter, horn, side blinkers indictor button, upper/lower button and Pass switch.
- Tires are pretty fat from the conventional. Rear is 100/90 – 17 and front is a meaty 3.00 – 17 where the general convention is 2.75. Both tires are tube type and belong to some unknown brand called ‘MahaGrip’ (It might be a sub brand to some known company, however I am hearing it for the first time).
- Front suspension are the regular tubular telescopic whereas the rear are the Bajaj’s trademark Spring in Spring (SNS) suspension.
- Bajaj has kept its name away from the motorcycle. The only place which makes you sure that this is a Bajaj production is the small Bajaj moniker at the engine. At the tank ‘BOXER’ and side panels ‘BM150’ decals galore.
- Engine note had a ‘power’ cry to it.
