Day : 2 - 24th August 08
We had to get up reluctantly early in the morning to commence day 2 of HX 5, actually the real fun of HX started from day 2. the scenery outside the hotel room was very scenic, river stream flowing in between the marvelous mountain range. First time in my life, I saw snow on the far mountain peaks, I just wished we encountered snow somewhere in our trip. It might sound silly, but for people from the plateau, its once in a life time opportunity. Had breakfast then prepared to prevent AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) with the help of medicines and checked out of hotel at around 8:30 AM. We had to cover a distance of around 200 kms on day 2 to reach Sarchu. Pretty less compared to the 600 we had rode the previous day. To be frank it’s a shame to compare any ride with each day of ride we had from Manali. All of us started together (for a change J). Soon I realized pressure in my front tire is less and I had to fill air. I have been facing this problem since the time I changed to new tires. So I was carrying a foot pump with me. I stopped just 10 kms into the journey and used the foot pump and I was all set to explore again. But all this took me a good 20 mins and I was doing the catch up fun again. I caught everyone soon, reason – the infamous traffic jam because of landslides in the mountains. There was a landslide and oil tankers(these oil tankers carry petrol/diesel/kerosene to remote places in the Himalayan mountain range and are found in plenty ) were facing great difficulty in climbing the steep incline filled with slush, flowing streams & stones(pebbles would be an understatement). The situation was pretty scary when the lorry would just slide back downwards when they fail to climb and the brakes would not stop them from sliding backwards. Maintain enough room when behind a truck in these mountains. We all managed to somehow squeeze our bikes through the pile of vehicles and clear the jam pretty quickly. Then the journey began again. Roads started to first deteriorate and then disappear leaving us to make our way through slush filled steep inclines. I went ahead and was climbing the mountains in a good pace.took a stop after sometime. Did some photo session. To my relief After around 15 mins I saw signs of my fellow rides climbing. Then I was getting ready to take their snap and all of a sudden mysteriously they disappeared. 15 mins later, still no one in sight I stared to get a bit worried. All weird thoughts crossing my mind and most prominent one being “Did I miss a turn ?” I confirmed from a passerby that I was on the right road to Rohtang pass which was just 2 kms from the spot. Then finally I spotted the group. They told me they stopped for a break and enjoyed the corn by the side of a small road side water fall. We crossed Rohtang pass and stopped to eat a couple of kms later. We had yummy omlets , bread , maggi and chai. Little did I know this menu for food would stay for majority of next whole week. Roads after Rohtang pass got better by each passing km and soon they turned perfect. Tribute to BRO(Border Roads Organization – who maintain roads in the Himalayan range). Our next stop was a place called “ZingZingBar”, very curious to know the history behind the name of this place. The roads continued to be good and me and Bu tested our bikes performance pretty well in this section. Then the roads were back to their normal way (offroading stuff) till Jispa. We filled up fuel since there was no pump for next 360 odd kms. Next stop would be Baralach La (“La” in local language means “Pass”). As the sun set, we finally reached Sarchu, all tired and waiting to sleep. We found tents to sleep for the night. Tents – sounds cool ha ? trust me, they were freezing cold L Most of us couldn’t sleep. We almost slept with all the riding gear itself – except helmet. Being tired was one reason but it was mainly because to protect ourselves from cold. It was around 3 c inside the tents ! I had a little headache, I learned that it was the first symptoms of AMS…Thought we took medicines to counter AMS, it had hit us…later Bu also complained about AMS…we had some good dinner and slept. Never in my life I felt so reluctant to remove my riding gloves.. but I had to for having food. By now we started to get a feel of the toughness test we had to go through. Just by day 2, we told to ourselves – to our relief, day 2 is over. Horror stories of 7 more days troubled us as we tried to catch some sleep in near freezing temperatures(mind you that was inside the cool tents J). Kms coverd on day 2 : around 230 Kms. Total Kms for the trip : 830 Kms. Departure Time from Delhi : 8:30 AM. Arrival time at Manali : Around 8 PM. |

I read through the WHOLE thing. Must say thoroughly enjoyed it. Maggi, Omelet and Tea seem yummy at those places and altitudes only. When you are hungry after a long ride, almost anything is welcome. I used to like it for lunch. Though Ashish (Gasoline) and I would go in the evening to find something "better" "tastier" to eat!
