Ravi Kiran is down in the dumps after a 160-km ride today. He just took a tablet to sleep.

                    Day 4 Log & Pics

                    Day : 4 - 26th August 08
Today, our schedule was to ride to the worlds officially highest motor able road – khardung La and ironically it turned out that Day 4 was the most relaxed day in the entire trip of 9 days. We cherished the soft bed after a demanding two day ride and ended getting up late. Our destination was just 40 odd kms from Leh. We all got ready leisurely, enjoyed the breakfast. We decided to pay some attention to our bikes today before we try the highest pass. I had to change the engine oil. Is & Ch had some things to be sorted out with their bikes as well. All done and ready to leave by around 10:30 AM I think. As we started climbing, we could see the snow filled mountain peaks at a distance. The view of Leh on the way to khardung la was marvelous. Roads were good and we didn’t fell we going to try the highest pass. Soon we encountered army convoy. These trucks were carrying kerosene to stock in Siachen for the winters. The army trucks, which were around 50 in number stopped and we had a very tough time to cross the parked trucks since the road was so narrow that one slip and we are down the valley, back to Leh !! the roads started to deteriorate. We were still around 15 kms from the pass. We finally crossed the army trucks and reached the top of the pass. We had a small photo session. There was temple which had around 100 steps to climb. Me and Ni decided that we will go even higher. I was amazed by the difficulty we faced just after climbing 10 steps. At this height, air is very thin and body’s oxygen supply is not met. Just 10 steps and we had to sit down for 5 mins, relax and then start again. We did this a couple of more times and we decided that’s it !! We didn’t wanted to risk since we had a tiring trip ahead. We really have to appreciate people who work as laborers in this part of the world, I can only imagine how tough it might be to indulge in hard labor – all for food & shelter. There was sovereign shop and some of us picked up some stuff for memory. Had some chai and started back and reached to our hotel in Leh at around 3 PM, I think. All of us had some or the other plans for the evening. All of us went out to explore the evening life in Leh. Is & Me went on his bike and we had 5 things listed to be done, and in the end none of them were completed J Then we all joined back to view the lights of Leh Palace as sun went down. We waited for quite some time and the lights never turned ON. Disappointed, we all turned back to hotel rooms after having dinner. Day 4 was a very short day indeed.

Kms coverd on day 4 : Just 100 kms
Total Kms for the trip : 1130 kms
Departure Time from Leh : Around 10:30 AM
Arrival time at Khardung la : Around 12 PM

View of Leh enroute to Khardung La

                    Spot the army convoy contest

A closer look at the small mighty trucks.

                    Awesome snow filled mountain tips.

View from Khardung La. The highest show filled mountain peak to the left side on the mountain range is the Mt. K2 - worlds second highest mountain, after Mt. Everest.

Officially worlds highest road conquered - 18350 ft.

Ni Bhai, feeling of being on top

Another shot of the mighty Mt K2 mountain range. The track you can see goes to Nubra Valley.

Army trucks carry on with their journey. The road goes to Siachen through Nubra valley

                    Evening life at Leh.
