I think they normally go to the Cecil.

I usually stay at the Holiday Home by HPTDC. You can book in advance over phone, online etc... There is guarded parking. I have not faced any problems the umpteen times I have crossed and stayed there with Sbks.

Keeping road conditions in mind this year, better look for a different place.

I went to chail around 9th of oct this year.. the roads conditions:

1. Delhi - Ambala - Good as usual
2. Ambala - Zirakpur - This road is more or less completely 4 laned except for a bridge in the middle and one or two other small patches.. Still not as good as NH1
3. Around Zirakpur - You will find huge traffic jams here because of the under construction flyover.. We were lucky to have left delhi on dusshera for mohali and found this section deserted.. On our way back from chd, it took us around 45 mins to cross zirakpur - I was in a bus on the way back and reached mohali on a car.
4. Zirakpur -> Pinjore/kalka - This stretch was good with a few nasty potholes - Can be done on a SBK if you are careful and if you do not speed up
5. Around Pinjore/Kalka - There was some board for a bypass to parwanoo, which we missed on both the legs of the journey and while there was quite a bit of traffic, this was not very bad..
6. Kalka -> Somewhere after parwanoo - Very bad roads, but on our way back we found repairs being done and I suppose the road is back to its usual self by now. Someone who has gone there in past 1-2 weeks would be able to give you a good assessment of this road..
7. Parwanoo -> Somewhere before solan - great NH22 tarmac as we expect it.. One can easily do 70-80 on a car if one is careful.. The speed limits are around 60km/h for cars.. I would be careful on a SBK as there are some potholes here and there, but otherwise good tarmac.
8. Around solan - Again broken roads and some pretty bad stretches with effects of recent landslides visible.. I suppose this section would also have been repaired, but definitely not a deal breaker - Around 5-10km of slow riding and you are back to the good tarmac.
9. Solan -> Kandaghat - Good to great surface..

I do not know about the section of NH22 after kandaghat, but I suppose it would be in good to great shape with a few broken patches..

Kandaghat-> Chail stretch was more or less ok.. Nothing great, but you can very easily ride on a SBK at slower speeds..

You can consider chail as an option.. The palace is pretty nice and decent, although most rooms are pretty expensive.. The hotel where we stayed last year on our chail trip was also pretty nice and the parking there was good enough to keep a few SBKs..

@ambar: Thanks for the priceless info, I am looking for snow capped peaks and ultra low temperatures . Dont you reckon Hatu will provide more of that?

What time are you leaving? If my adrenaline pumps its usual levels, I might get better by tonight. Just in case... do let me know of the departure time and place.

I will leave from my place at 4.45 AM odd. I will be going via Jhandewalan to pick up a video camera from a TV office from my friend and then heading to Piragarhi Chowk. Final timing etc will be decided by today evening.

Ambala-Zirakpur section is 4 lane now.

I cover this stretch in 20 mins on a Zma.
So with a SBK it should be like 10 minutes
