You have tread on more uncharted 'One avenues than probably even the Yam guys themselves.
Few can guess the preamble behind the simple phrase: 'the R1 is a bike after all'.

Looking forward to that 'chilly' Narkanda trip log.

Naah. Look at Nick. He is phenomenal. And now you guys are going there as well.

As for the black ice and snow trip to Himachal on the R1 some years ago... here is a reminder...
Some old timers will remember this photograph here

None needed till the temp drops substantially below zero. The coolant has anti-freeze, fuel injection allied with 12+:1 compression ratio ensures easy starts and black ice needs something like 5 below to actually form and stay. So we are safe. Only possible weak link: the batteries. They usually underperform when cold but again it will not be THAT cold.

And then as Ken says, even the One is a bike, not an aircraft. And downhill starts dont even need the initial push.
NOTE : This knowledge has been filed away in the set of neurons, that have been earmarked to trigger the day i buy a One for myself

Does the term Black Ice refer to frozen coolant OF sir..?

And Ken da.. We are eagerly awaiting the aforementioned thread

Black Ice is frost on tarmac, difficult to walk on let alone ride a bike with near slicks!

You can check Vivek's posts on the Raid de Himalaya thread in the Motorsports section to see what Black Ice can do to experienced rallyists.

In the meanwhile, the old thread will be up soon (I hope).

Well.. chail around dusshera was cold enough for me.. Not that I mind the snow or anything similar..

Hatu is going to be better for sure, but then you can also consider the fact that it is easier to catch a proper snowfall if you go to rohtang area these days..

Personally I preffer the ride to manali over the shimla ride.. The roads are less twisty, the scenery is better and if you want snow/ice, then it is kinda guranteed thru the year if you go to rohtang.. On most years, after diwali, there should be a good amount of snow around marhi so no need to take the bike all the way to rohtang if you want snow.. The real trick is to get a stay at the PWD resthouse at gulaba
