Default Hill station near Delhi to Superbike to?

I am planning to take the R1 to Rohtang Pass in the coming week. Can anyone update me about the road conditions/availability of snow over there?

I was there a few weeks back. We had the first snowfall of the year there. I really doubt how well a R1 will get out deep mud and ice. a stretch of 8 km is absolutely bad! The road widening is in progress as well.

@rahul: How about the road from Delhi to Manali as the first section?

We will then think about the road from Manali to Rohtang.

(Delhi - Chandigarh ) - Very Good - One can touch about 140Km

(Chandigarh - Kullu ) - Till Anantpur Sahib, fine after that average Indian Roads, but still on the hills one can maintain average of 40-50Kmph

(Kullu - Manali) - The roads starts to worsen here. Still manageable

(Manali - Rohtang ) - The worst of all, especially the last 6-8 Kms.

My verdict: Give it a shot, you can always turn back from the lat few km, and have friends to help you out if in case you are stuck in Ice/Mud/

I dont want to take too many chances before the big ride. How will be Lansdowne to ride down a R1?

The Delhi-Lansdowne route is a good one. It has a few rough patches, but really nothing that the R1 cannot handle. And the ride from Kotdwara uphill all the way to Lansdowne is surely a scenic, cool and real quiet one; something that you and the R1 - both would remember!

Also, there isn't any crowd to speak of at Lansdowne, so the R1 would be safe from prying eyes as well. But, do not forget to book your accomodation in advance or else that could prove to be a headache. I would anyday suggest the GMVN tourist guest house over anything else (the couple of hotels that are available).

All in all I totally believe that the Delhi-Lansdowne trip is doable for the R1, and in one day(!!) no less (if you are willing to).

The road from here to Lansdowne has been pretty roughed up. I am not talking about the plains section, from here to Meerut and after that as well. There are quite a few people who keep moving on these stretches. I am talking about the state of the roads from about a couple of weeks back.

Nobody is talking about Delhi-Shimla since it has been oft repeated and done and rehashed over and over again. But it still remains a good piece of tarmac and a fun ride. Why not do Shimla!
