Default New 150cc bike come January

Hello there, I am looking to buy a new 150cc bike come January. My current ride is an Rx135, which I’ve been riding for the last 9 years. My requirements are good acceleration, good handling, reasonable riding comfort and 40 plus mileage. I would be using this new bike for next 2-3years. Thanx to xBhp, I have read most of your impressions and experiences with the bikes available in the market. I have narrowed down my choice to these four bikes (not mentioned in order of preference) 1. R15 2. FZ16 3. RTR(carb) 4.GS150R. I know all these bikes have their pros and cons. I’m looking to select the one with more favorable pros. Below, I have expressed my concerns (model wise), would like to hear your thoughts too.

1. YAMAHA R15 & FZ16
I have a special affinity towards Yamaha products (as I even own 1 now) but I am let down by some of the practical problems with R15 and FZ16.

a) Both these bikes lack a kicker which I feel is very essential for Indian conditions.
Can any of the R15 or FZ16 owners tell me how ur bikes have faired in torrential rain conditions. With incessant rains in Chennai for the whole of last week, Chennai bikers can contribute more.

b) How is the pillion seat comfort in both FZ16 and R15? I have seen the bikes in showroom and I personally feel it is not all that suitable to take my family (mom/wife). Any contradicting opinions ?

c) The build quality of R15 is kind of ok but for sure the FZ16 is sub standard especially the mag wheels. I’m not sure if its worth spending 1.1 lakhs or 74k on these bikes. I can stretch to spend over a lakh on a bike provided I know if it’s VFM.

d) From what I have heard & read, on an average both the FZ and R15 return a mileage between 35 – 40kms. Is it possible get more ?

2. TVS RTR
As far as the RTR is concerned I am happy with the acceleration, looks & mileage. Ppl talk about vibration after 6k rpm, think I can manage with that as I’m used to riding a 2-stroke for 9 years. But I’m more worried about the clunky gearbox and TVS’s engine reliability after 1 yrs usage. I have been advised not to opt for the RTR by some TVS racing team members as it engine quality deteriorates drastically after a year’s usage.
As far as the eFI, I’m still not convinced about TVS ability in dealing with FI technology.

3. SUZUKI GS150R
I had a look at it in showroom, but no test rides given in Chennai. The bike looks good but it’s bulky (feel its bulkier than Unicorn). Gotta wait till January to know more about the bike. Anybody got any tidbits on this ?

hey donarun, regarding rtr, I am riding one for more than a year now.. I have faced no major problems till now.. its still my darling
regarding vibes, a good synthetic oil like motul/power1 should solve the problem to a great extent.

TVS racing team members comments are scary though

I have a r-15 too.. I guess it will be a bit hard to ride on it with your mom/wife!

And I am not a qualified person to speak about FZ and GS150 since i have never rode them.

Looking at your requirement I think the best suited bike for you is RTR but since you already blacklisted the bike I think there are no more choices remains there.

GS150 wouldnt be much torquey if compared with FZ/RTR, you can look for P200 or wait for P200Fi (launching soon).

Fz16 is a good choice but small pillion space seat.
RTR is good but can't say about reliability.
Wait for P200 fi january launch.

a. I think those times are gone when a kicker is needed. Even I don't "USE" it in my P180 anymore anytime.

b. FZ's seat is soft for short rides. Long rides may bother though. Can't comment on R15.

c. I test drove both these bikes & as general I don't think this was an issue in either. Build quality seems great at first opinion. Maybe an owner can comment...

d. Well, I suppose the Fz can return from 45-50 if driven good. Reg. R15 I say it will give 35-40, but if you are on highways, you may well get 50+...

2. Dealing in Fi is not a real issue, as they get it outsourced from Delphi Engine Systems. This particular company supplies all 2 Wheeler Fi's in India, including P220, Glamour Fi, RTR Fi, etc.

Reg. Gearbox, maybe you should test drive it. I couldn't spot this problem in my TD.

And also reg. engines losing power, There is a member named "Joel" in Xbhp. He owns an RTR, which is heavily modified for Race use. He is the best person who can help you. Send him a PM. As far as I'm concerned, this is first time I heard such a complaint.

3. I haven't test rode it. When I do, I'll reply here ... ok?

Can't comment on 1 & 2, though I think spending 74k on FZ16 is not a wise decision, it can't justify the price when other 150ccs are available at 8-10k cheaper.

GS150 is one hell of a machine. I really loved the way it sailed, nice torque. In fact, I was about to book one, and I am still planning my finances for it. Make sure you take a test ride of GS150R before finaziling. Specially for carrying family lady members, it's great. Only thing is it is bit heavy, but only 3 kgs heavier than Unicorn.

Cool Had a Test Drive of Suzuki GS 150 R in Bangalore

It is typical Unicorn with the goodies of Pulsar. Yes the only -ve I found in a very short Test drive was its weight. But it is only 3 kgs heavier than Unicorn.

I've booked both Suzuki GS 150 R and Yamaha FZ 16. FZ 16 is ready for delivery, but I'm waiting for a proper test drive once again of the GS 150 once again. Then I'll decide on which one to go for.

Before this I was tempted to go for RTR Fi, but because of the waiting period of 60 days, I just postponed my buying and now there are another 2 new bikes. We are really spoilt for choice.

THE Engine of GS 150 is very smooth and the gear shift is good. The Electricals are excellant. If your build is below average, then I would suggest RTR only. I'm yet to take a TD of FZ 16 - once I take that I'll give you the details on that Bike.
