The riding pattern was as such:

    1. Keeping between 50-60 kmph. No variations in Speed, unless really needed.

    2. If I leave the throttle due to some reason, I raise speed back very slowly. Very soft handling of the throttle.

    3. Minimal usage of brakes. Leaving the throttle whenever I need to slow a bit.

    4. Kept the bike in the 4-5 krpm zone for top gear and 3-4 for lower 4 gears. Don't know why I do it, maybe for psychological advantage... Just did it anyways.

    5. Crouched down mostly/ wherever I could. It works!
Ride at a good speed, say 60 kmph or so, and then crouch... Your speeds will increase despite the same throttle input.

Now, I have double the pocket money, around 3500 but this time, I'm paying for my fuel by myself. Hence, the recent over-thinking about fuel consumption problems.

But on Sambhar lake trip, the mileage dropped back to 39 kmpl. Riding? 75 kmph most of the time and 50 kmph on bad roads. Some off roading on sand tracks too. Well, less mileage was obvious but 39?

very same riding style in my case to...and thats why i am getting the same mileage figures from my 180 ug4...but, nowadays i dont like to tell this to anyone, just will say company saying mileage, 45-50. because nobody will believe after saying this. and i feel it little bad...so now my current mileage figure lies in between 45-50..
    sigpicmy bike is my sign

Mileage also depends on the healthiness of the engine and age of the bike

        Thanks for the thread.
The below is how i achive the peak mileage.

This is what I do in my ZMA is

Ill keep in top gears 3-4 KRPM

Traffic ,will try to avoid but Bangalore wont allow me.

Will switch off the engine if I have to stop for More than 30 Sec[Im not sure how ideal is this,NOTE : on starting process engine waste some fuel]

In Banglore no point in speeding because you have to slow down / stop on signals and jams. So keep speeds down.

I will check tyre pressure once in two weeks.[I use stock tyres].

Will keep Ideal speed of the engine to the least. So in in signals and jams it wont consume much Fuel.

My battery is also well charged.[It does effect a little]

Now I'm getting peak mileage of 43 Kmpl on a ZMA[2006-Well maintained].

          some more tips :
          1. Dont ride above 50 km/hr - you will have minimum air drag at this speed. (everyone knows it but no one here will do it)
          2. Do not wear loose clothes which swell up during a ride and increase your air drag surface area.
          3. Crouch at higher speeds to reduce air drag.
          4. Choose lower viscosity oil when recommendation is like 10w30 or 20w40 or 20w50.. Go for 10w30 (keeping ambient temp in mind)
          5. Dont change lanes unnecesarily at high speeds(at any speed for that matter), have seen guys overtaking a vehicle and then changing lanes extremely fast to come in front of the vehicle they were overtaking - when their own lane was clear and no other vehicle was visible in the rear view. (explanation- dont do it very fast.. When you can easily take 100-200 meters to change lanes, when you change the lanes fast and slow down you actually encounter more airdrag and also slowing down and then accelerating - and putting more load on the engine. Release the thottle gradually after an overtaking manouver and gradually come to the lane you want to ride/drive in(when the rear view is clear)
          6. Lastly, choose the bike as per your riding style.. Buying a 220cc just for keeping a higher cc engine is worthless unless you give the bike the feel its made for! It will curse a rider not going above 60.. He deserved a 110 cc!. Conversely a rider pushing a 110 cc at 90 km/hr is getting cursed by the machine for overdoing it.

            I. Have just shifted to biking... I have got bullet classic 350 8 days ago.. the problem with me is that I use lots of clutch and forget to change gears or sometimes change it very soon... this way I don't think I will get above 30-32

Any specific advise for me please...

            Thanks

              Nice bro! Thank you.
I heard that while in running if clutch is pressed with no acceleration, fuel consumption is decreased, is it true? Pleas clarify

yes , riding at 40's KMPH would strain and makes over heating issues , resulting low average , riding at midrange say 60's is advisable , Hence more air flow , better cooling , better milage

Brother even this can cause you to change your clutch plates very early and the fuel consumption will also be more so try to try the optimum gear shifting

I want to know...why does the mileage of a old bike reduce?
what should be done to enjoy the same mileage which the bike used to give when it was new from the showroom?

Wear and tear of internal parts, bust clutch plates or chain-sprockets, clogged filters, bald tires, accumulation of dirt in fuel lines due to bad petrol, change in riding style etc.

Say after 1 lac kms, you redo the entire engine from scratch, replace old tires, put new spark plugs, replace clutch plates, replace chain sprocket, change carburettor and air filter etc ; you'll get 95% close to brand new performance.

if clutch plates, chain sprocket kit, oil, air, fuel filters, spark plugs are changed regularly then does mileage and performance issue come?

i never knew carb has to be changed...is it so?

Every part requires maintenance. If you keep all possible parts in top notch condition, you can expect it to perform almost as good as stock.
Carb usually doesn't require replacement, but my room mate had to replace his 6 year old Platina's carb.

                                For usual conditions:-
                                1. Air filter must be replaced every 10k kms
                                2. Spark plug must be replaced every 12k kms
                                3. Fork oil must be replaced every 15k kms.
                                4. Rear shocks must be looked after every 20k kms
                                5. Oil must be replaced every 2k-3k kms (depends upon type of oil)
                                6. Chain sprocket must be lubed every 500 kms to ensure max life.
                                7. No improper usage of clutch ensures max life.
                                8. Keep track of tire tread and air pressure.
                                9. Carb must be cleaned every 15k kms.
                                10. Fuel lines must be cleaned once a year.
                                Got a $5 head? Get a $5 helmet.
