Re: Need a Suggestions for a New Bicycle Under Rs.15,000

WARNING: NOOB QUESTION!

Ok, i used to cycle a lot when i was in school, that was 10 years back.

I want to get back into cycling again, and need pointers, because the cycling scene back then was ruled by hercules and BSA, and my knowledge on the current products are next to zilch.

I'm, 6.1", weigh 105 kilos (all blubber and no muscle), and my usage is going to be 100% on roads(no need for suspension). I'm also looking at something which doesnt rust or wear out as fast as the old hercules products used to.

What sort of budget should i work up? I'm not looking at those exclusive bikes, just something easy to live with.
Did some basic recon on the internet and found different frame sizes and builds, i.e Al and Fe (Any advice on these?)
I live in Chennai, so if any owners in Chennai can point me to a good store, I'd really appreciate it. TIA!

EDIT: Will be checking out the Decathlon store this weekend. Advice still welcome though!

I feel Btwin My bike is L frame size is the best bet. You can get it below 5K and needs very less maintenance. I rode it over an year in Chennai, before buying a MTB.
Even now when I ignore it for many days, it will be ready for the ride anytime after cleaning the dust.

If you are keen on low budget and gears, you can try Btwin Rock rider 7. They both come without suspension. PayTM website has some cool offers on these bicycles.

There are other models in fire fox and Montra, if your budget is below 25k. You get good hybrids of other brands in higher price band, not to forget the cost of accessories.

In Chennai, Just buy cyclces elite at Velachery and Pro bikers on OMR, near perungudi are the two stores where people usually flock to, for getting a new ride now a days. Go have a look around in those stores, before heading to Decathlon as you will come to know the available models and price bands.

If your budget is low and want a good bike, try looking for used ones in Cyclops facebook group or in OLX/Quickr.

Paytm is giving some attractive discounts on Kross bikes. Any idea, how built quality of Kross is in general?

Hello guys,
I have been a noob researcher like you, and ended up with Cosmic trium 27.5
I actually was about to go for La Sovereign or Btwin RR , but the frame shape attracted me more in Cosmic ones. I can say that i took risk in purchasing the bike which generally has no brand presence.
Now after 15 days of my new love, My Trium i am an extremely joyful owner. It is no doubt a head turner, and got it at a good price from Kavitha Cycles.
Although it have had few glitches like the grips which were not comfortable ( i have upgraded with Btwin Grips though) , the bike is a solid fist and surely sturdy enough, with a fantastic road presence.
Now i do daily trip of 15-20 km and i feel pretty much comfort in my ride.
Loading the bike with accessories , definitely a childhood dream to own a bike with gears come true.
I would love to post a story with my experience.

I had bought this hybrid Montra cycle for my daughter about six months ago from track n trail here in Pune for 14k. Shimano 21 gears, shock absorbers, normal brakes though. Hope this helps

Cosmic and Montra too are good quality bikes. You can go for it.

Check your comfort level with a test ride. Decide on the Bike you buy.

So it's been a month and a half since i started cycling, and the need for speed was felt throughout! Most times i would curse myself, that i should've not been a cheapskate and shelled out more for a hybrid. I hate being one of those people who sell their cycles/bikes as soon as they're not happy with it.

Solution: Tyre upgrade!

The new low profile look with retroreflective tape on the tyre sidewalls (lovin it!)

I used to attain a max speed of 21km/h on the old tyres, now i'm easily able to hit and maintain 27 (checked in decathlon's parking lot, need to road test)

The tyres cost Rs. 2382 for a pair (expensive i know, but hey, i kinda got a hybrid now!)
Acceleration has improved too.

Which tyres are these? And let us know how puncture prone (or not) these tyres are after using it for a few days.

Also, even after this, you might still be calling yourself a cheapskate and wanting to upgrade your bike asap

They're Btwin Resist5ATC 26" tyres. Been ridden on no roads and good roads. The speed/acceleration gain is instant, almost on par with a hybrid. Top speed attained was 39.6km/hr according to Strava. Heck lot of weight loss for the bicycle (and hopefully for me!), easy to manoeuvre and according to the specs, it's puncture resistant, but need to check to what extent. Been riding 30 kms everyday, and loving it! need to upgrade the drive train to get a higher top speed, but i guess that's in the back seat for now...

Lol, The Monk, yeah, even though i didnt spend that much on a hybrid, i might end up spending the same on upgrades! I'm indian, i am a cheapskate!

Fomas Road bike - Single speed/Fixie at Rs 11,800

I'm in hunt for a fixie which costs less. I have seen firefox flip-flop but somehow I didn't feel like riding it.

Also by seeing this post in forum ,I got inspired to weld my rear freewheel to make my Btwin my bike as fixie, but I was advised against it as fixed wheel hub has a lock nut which will prevent the cog from unscrewing when you try and pedal backward. Which means that there are chances that if I get it welded it may unscrew from hub when pedalled backwards resulting in a accident.

While thinking about this, I came across a bike called road/city king made by FOMAS. It's official website mentions it as a road bike, but in store, it has a flip flop hub . While I have seen it with drop handle bars, onwer told that he can give with bull handle bar also. It is very attractive. I was told that frame is a steel alloy.

So does anyone have info about this bike ? Is it worth spending money on it ?

P.S : Purefix cycles are an option, if I don't get anything I may go for it after some time.

Fixes are quirky bicycles & great fun at the same time! but it's better to try it out first before plonking money into it. For now the best way I could suggest you is the way I started out, get a Flip/Flop Fix/Free or Fix/Fix Hub from any online bike site, build up a rear wheel locally & use it on your current bike. IF you current bike has either Horizontal or Semi-Horizontal rear drop-out.

to better illustrate your rear end of the frame should look like either of these.

This is so that the chain slack can be managed.

If your bike has a vertical dropout / none of these dropouts then simply buy any old Hero-Hawk/ Mach One, since they have semi horizontal drops.

Once you know which bike you'll be using the hub with then you can decide whether to build a 700c wheel on the hub or a 27inch wheel or 26inch wheel.

So it you wanna use it on a MTB (indian or imported) then the wheels are 26inch, imported Hybrid & road-bikes, cross bikes then 700c wheels & Indian Roadsters like Hero-hawk & Mach one then 27inch.

Enjoy yourself - You can look at my intro thread to check a new fixe I had bought after I experimented like above, since I converted the fixe into a retro roadbike.
