• Graduation to Zero BHP

I have been riding two wheelers for quite sometime. Recently i have owned a Joeled P220 and currently owning a CBR 250R ABS. Motorcycles makes you lazy to be very honest. Hitting the gym is not always an option when you have a busy IT Job. So i went for running for a few days. But i have to admit it is BORING. I just had to loose some weight not that i am very fat but i have been fitter before. So cycling it is....

Folks you can have a question on why the title is termed as "Graduation to Zero BHP". In my opinion switching from a vehicle which leaves behind a carbon foot print to a non polluting vehicle should always be called a graduation.

I was planning to buy a cycle in few months. I still missed my Hercules MTB 9000 from my school days .Shared this idea with one of my dear friend. He already had Hercules Top Gear in his stable. It was left in dire straits as he was living in Pune to pursue higher education. He told me that i can have it if i did all the repair work. Gladly i accepted his offer.

The bike was around 12 years old. I took it to a nearby repair shop. They have changed the tires (normal nylon tyres), serviced the bike. Checked the Shimano 6 speed gear system.. It still rides well. I am taking it slow as i will be on a bike saddle after a longggg time. Currently i am riding it for 5kms daily in the morning. Once i get some confidence with it i will increase the distance.

I am 6.1 feet tall and i weigh 87kg. So i had to adjust the seat height after doing some research on the internet. Currently only my toes are touching the ground.

Problems- 1. Firstly the brakes makes a squealing sound when i press them. I took it to a mechanic. He told me that there is nothing that could be done to stop the noise. It will dissapear after the brakes wear off a little. I also asked him about "toeing" the brakes. He did not have any idea about it. Guess it will be my DIY job for the weekend.
2. The lower gears, 1st 2nd and 3rd works very smoothly. Gear 4, 5 and 6 has some vibrations to it. Would appreciate help on what to do with this.
3. The saddle is rock hard. It is really a pain in the place where the sun doesnt shine. So my question is, will it get better with time as i am cycling after a long time its a process of just getting used to a different dimension of saddle or should i get myself a gel cover. The original bike i think came with a spring seat but currently the seat does not any springs.

I am really elated to be back to cycling. Well our good old monk has been really an inspiration towards this. Please treat me as a novice when it comes to cycling. Any comments or suggestions are most welcome.
I will be riding this bike for atleast a year or so before I upgrade to a better one so any suggestions for upgrades for this bike to make it Road worthy is welcome.

Firstly congratulations and welcome to the world of cycling

Secondly at your height you are WAY too big for this cycle!

Thirdly, it is what it is, you cannot expect a splendor to be a busa no matter what you do to it!

Now coming to your problems -

1. DIY is mostly the way to go with cycles. It is a simple machine and easy to maintain at home itself. Those brakes and rims will squeal, quality issues and will need to be adjusted frequently. Again price point issues.

2. Gears at that price point are absolutely rubbish. I would recommend you to do away with the gears completely and ride it as a single speed. Kolkata is flat, you don't really require gears. And on that bike it would be more nuisance than useful.

3. HTFU is a term used by cyclists. Google it Also don't use any gel cover. You will get used to it and understand the true meaning of Iron Butt
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

Thanks Monk for the quick approval.

I guessed it the very first time that i was way too big for the cycle that i got. But since i got it for free i want to get used to cycling all over again on this. I will be upgrading soon.
I was planning to clean the rim with rubbing alcohol to get rid of any debris that might have accumulated in the rims hopefully that will take care of the brakes as for now.
For the gears i hardly shift them as i didnt find any need. i prefer to ride it at gear 3 most of the time.

Nice upgrade man! I have been thinking of doing this for almost a year now. Can't give up motorcycling completely (I will cease to exist ), but thought of atleast cycling to office by parking my bike at my Dad's office which is not too far away from there. But everyday I realize this is a bad idea as even cyclists are not spared by the horrendous traffic of Hinjewadi!!

First of all, congrats.
Secondly, you have somehow brought back sweet memories. I had a Hercules Top Gear way back in 2002 till 2005. My father had gifted the same to me after I passed my 10+2. Price-wise, the bike might not see itself way up the ladder but it was a priceless gift as my father could afford that much only. Rode it extensively before it got stolen while I was one of my friend's place.
Bike used to perform pretty well even pothole oriented roads of Northern Kolkata. As the gears are very basic, maintenance was minimal. But I would not suggest you to further invest on the gears. Instead, ride it without gears and later upgrade to a more premiere bike. Shifting gears through a marketplace can be irritating initially.
All the best!
A bike on the road is worth two in the shed.

Deathmate.Zed I did not leave riding Motorcycles. I still ride my CBR. The bike is currently for Fitness only. krishna77 Thanks, I will be upgrading to a better bike in few months time. So i would not be investing in the Top Gear. I hardly shift as Monk rightly mentioned that there are less numbers of Inclines and declines in Kolkata. I mostly ride it in 3rd gear. It also suits me well.
