  • First SR (Super Randonnuer) in new Season 2015-2016

The Audax India Randonnuers (AIR) calendar runs from November 1st to October 31st every year. One who finishes 200Km, 300Km, 400Km and 600 Km in that calendar anywhere in India is called a Super Randonnuer (SR). AIR is the all-India organisation of randonneurs, which is recognised by Audax Club Parisien (ACP) for conducting and overseeing all Brevets de Randonneurs Mondiaux (BRMs) and Audax events in India.

It all started as a practise for riding in Spiti, which lead to participating in first 200 BRM last year in June. Soon after learning about 300 brevet and above to become SR, I have practised well to complete all the four rides before October 31 2015 to achieve the Super Randonnuer title.I felt very happy about it. It made me mentally strong and increased enthusiasm to take part in more and more brevets this season.

In the new season that has started in November, I have so far finished 3 X 200 Km's and one each of 300,400 and 600. When the new calendar is released in mid of October, I have carefully planned to achieve multiple SR's this year. After finishing 400 Brevet in Hyderabad, I have achieved first SR of the season. I was glad that I finished all rides within two months, while it took me more than three months to achieve it last time. Also there are many improvements in riding style, food and hygiene during and post ride. Most important among them being saddle sore. There is no saddle sore at all in this season. I still have to deal with numb hands post ride for 400,600 brms.

I will pen detailed reports of each rides in the same thread whenever I get time. Till then here is a very short summary of each ride. I'm limiting it to only the four rides involved in becoming SR.

    Distances-Times
    200 Km – 13.5 Hrs | 300 Km – 20 Hrs | 400 Km – 27 Hrs | 600 Km – 40 Hrs | 1000 Km – 75 Hrs | 1200 Km – 90 Hrs |

(click on distance to go to event page in AIR website)

    200 : 14 th nov 2015 - Bangalore - Chintamani - Kolar- Bangalore :
Expected a challenging route from Bangalore ranonnuers as they said it is a new route, but it turned out to be a simple and nearly flat/easy rolling terrain. I felt happy that I finished it in 11 hrs 15 mins. No exhaustion at end of ride and I rode in another 200 BRM in mysore the very next day and finished it sucessfully.

Before entering 2nd CP at Chintamani.

    300 : 5th Dec 2015 : Hyderabad- Marketpalli -Miryalaguda - Hyderabad :
This is one brevet which I cannot forget for a long time. Chennai was submerged in floods. Transportation was not available to get out of city. My bicycle was struck at store for servicing. I have changed 5 vehicles to reach start point in time. I got a bicycle for rent, which I managed to arrange with limited communication facilities available at that time. To make things more terrible, I have forgotten my cycling jersey in Chennai as I left in hurry.

It was a night ride. It didn't get much colder then. Route was easy till 150 Kms. It became difficult from there with narrow state highways. At last control point near 270 kms, I got knee pain, due to which became very terrible for me to ride ahead. Last 30 kms took nearly three or four hours, else it was a decent finish at 17 hrs 30 mins.

    600 : 25 th Dec 2015 : Bangalore- Chennarayapatna- Arsikere- Shimoga- Bangalore : ( Ride report)

After finishing 3 200's and a 300, I was confident and eager to check myself in a very long ride. The route is terribly rolling and return being very touch as it is a climb all the way from Shimoga to bangalore for 300 Kms. The head winds from Shimoga made life so difficult and terrible. Riders had to fight extreme cold as well as extreme heat in morning. It was thoroughly exhausting. Also to add more miseries , knee started paining terribly at 300 Km. Around 480km, I met with a terrible crash as I slept on bicycle. Luckily there are no serious injuries, but I fell on ribs. It made very difficult for me to get on and off the saddle. Only the my eagerness to be at finish line has taken me there just 10 minutes before the clock stopped ticking. My confidence levels boosted exponentially.

At start point of 600. To my right is Mohan Subramanyam, who always rides on his MTB and is a inspiration for many. He is down to earth though he has achieved a lot. To my right is Shanmuganathan ( whom we call as Shun shortly). He is also from Chennai, and joined me in travelling to Bangalore for brevets. He is lightning fast on his roadie.

    After reaching the finish point

400 : 9 th Jan 2016 : Hyderabad- Kamareddy- Armoor- Pochampadu- Hyderabad : I was eager to be SR in this season, hence had to go for this ride even though there is a 300 in Chennai on the same day. It is a completely rolling terrain with fierce head winds and climbs in the return leg. Especially from Dichpally to Kamareddy. I rode with a group for nearly 75 % of the ride. Though we were very tight on time due to the extended breaks, we made it on time. I contacted a physio after 600, who suggested me to increase saddle height. Magically it removed knee pain. Also I managed well with food along the route.

I realised that riding in brevets continuously, for working professionals is not easy. Continuous travelling in weekends, managing work, attending daily chores is little difficult. Yet I'm happy that I'm able to manage things and was able to finish all attempted rides so far.

Congratulations. Yes spending your entire week in office and then travelling to the city where the brevet is being held and then cycling and then heading back to office. That does get pretty taxing.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

Thank you. Wow, I'm very glad to know that you are going to participate in a 200 BRM. Where will you be riding this? All the best, Practice well.

The idea of riding two nights under full moon sounded very exciting. That too, if it is Christmas and this coincidence with full moon happening after 1977, I felt it is a ride not to miss at all. Also this ride is very important for me to ensure my capabilities of riding above 400 Kms. Unlike usual scenario, I was not really excited or worried about the route this time. I was very confident that I will complete brevet as I have already completed three200's and a 300 in this season started in November. Only thing that bothered me is cold, as I have never rode in cold weather before. Also, I didn't practise at all, owing to Chennai rains and bad roads around. Combined with my laziness, I haven't ridden my bike for more than 5-6 kms any day for three weeks after 300BRM in Hyderabad. I brought a new power bank, packed the leg warmers I brought for my trip to Himalayas and set on to finish the first 600 of the season. Reached CMBT with my travel partner Shanmuganthan ( Shun, as we call him), got onto Volvo bus and reached Bangalore , well ahead of Start time. After some time organizers showed up, gave brevet cards and bike check was also finished. I was just waiting for clock to go past 4pm to start Pedalling.

One of the people who always inspire me, Mohan Subramanyam is also riding in this brevet. I know I will finish for sure, if I tag along with him. Without wasting any time or stopping anywhere, we reached Bangalore-Manglore highway. We rode with slow pace from there. I have witnessed the best sunset in Brevets I rode so far, I could see the sun completely submerging below the horizon. It is not very often that one gets to witness such beautiful sights. Sometime later, I pedalled ahead and reached Maurya hotel near Belur cross.

This is what brevet's offer. Serenity !the second control point with three hours buffer time.

I have mentally split the ride to three 200's. Reaching this CP means 1/3 of ride is finished. We have to ride 100kms further and come back here again which finishes 2/3rs and rest 200 Km is ride back to Bangalore. While Mohan stayed here, I continued as I was worried about my speed and uphill in return.

The 100 Kms to Shimoga/Sivamogga were strenuous. Especially with the unexpected very long speed breakers, unmindful traffic the riding conditions became much worse. As curtains were being raised for a new dawn, my energy levels were getting pumped up, while the moon was reluctant to set even after 7 am. I ate bread I'm carrying and pedaled ahead. Since 8 am the beauty of sun turned to wrath. He started to shine very brightly and decided to make the riders suffer. Luckily, since the heat is yet to reach full level, I managed to pedal a little quicker and reached Shimoga by 9.15 am. This is the third CP, and yet three hours buffer is maintained once again.

Buddy came out to provide some warmth and light.

After taking a selfie to record my time there, I hunted for a hotel which serves Set dosa as it is my favourite food in Karnataka, which I'm missing very much after coming to Chennai. I had to come out of town for having it. After breakfast I did a butterfly stretch, which caused some pain in right knee, since then whenever I pedalled down, I felt like someone is pricking on nerve with a pin. This happened to me in last 30 kms in 300 Brevet at Hyderabad also. I took three hours to finish those 30 kms then pedalling with single leg, but now thought of doing the same for 300 Km's caused some fear in me. I started again, since I didn't want to give up. I continued riding with Mohan who showed up again near Bhadravathi bypass.

Life seemed terrible with constant burning heat, head winds and uphill, the most unfavourable conditions for a rider. Combined my knee pain, my mind became restless and more I grew more anxious about reaching end point. I used volini spray, which has no affect at all and my woes continued. We stopped for lunch at Tarikere. We saw a two guys touring to Honnavara, on MTB's who were very lightly packed, in fact no luggage at all ! Also, they are not regular riders and this is their first trip!

After lunch, I couldn't keep up with Mohan due to knee pain and rode with slow speed on lower gears. The uphill rolling terrain seemed never ending, nor my woes. The mindless drivers who doesn't care about riders on extreme left of the road caused much worry but again, being helpless to control my pain or anger I rode ahead. Buffer time started to disappear. At a place, when I was completely exhausted, I started looking for a shade. Since there is nothing visible in vicinity I stood on side of road. A snake slowly came out from grass inside. It is thin and hardly 1 metre long in blackish gray colour. It is passing right in front of me. I had no clue, if I have to pedal forward or go backwards. In that utter confusion, I choose to just stand as I was. Snake went back in exactly the same path. I started breathing again while getting back on saddle to reach CP.

I reached fourth CP, which is CCD at Arsikere again, with two hours left. While it took, 12 hours to reach while coming, it took me 15 hours to go to Shimoga and come back here. I started again, after using rest room and changing to foam padded from gel padded shorts, which is causing chaffing. I have now 15 hours to ride back to finish point which is 200 kms away buffer time being reduced to 1.5 hours. I was reluctant to use medicine for knee pain before, but wanted to try a knee cap. Also someone at CP suggested the same. So I brought a knee cap in Arsikere town. It relived me from pain a little and I was able to pedal with ease again. But the uphill didn't end yet. There were no slopes to gain momentum at all. It became dark soon. I was not able to pedal at my full capacity and since some fatigue has already set in, I felt very dull and lonely. I took frequent stops. The darkness seemed never ending. I thought even Batman may fear such loneliness.

I stopped at a place to have Chapatis I made at home and brought along with me. Something went wrong and they became expanding and non-chewable. I managed to have a bit of it with pea nut butter and started again. As it became very dull and boring, I started to pedal little faster. Life might have thought to add some spice in the boring ride.

Riding fast caught the attention of a dog. It along with one of its mate started to chase me. I had no other option, except to pedal at my maximum speed. I forgot all uphill and my knee pain for a while. Survival is the only aim. I got out if their territory safely, but their braking echoed in my brain again and again. Knee cap is helping in supressing pain. Flat road showed up, which lifted my spirits, also it indicated that I'm nearing the highway. Lights began to appear in bokeh effect and soon they appeared clearly. At 9 pm I'm on Bangalore Mangalore highway again. I refilled water in the same shop where I had Pepsi yesterday and started again to reach my destination, which is 150 kms away with 11 hours in hand. Assumption is that I will reach there in 9 hours.

Life had different plans for me !

My intention is to reach Belur cross, where I can find good hotels. But all the factors already affecting me along with the increasing cold made me ride slow as well as feel hungry. I stopped at a food joint where only tatte idli is available. While having them the lady there offered to make Chitranna for me. I was reluctant to have rice as it will put me to sleep, but I was not sure if I can get anything to eat in rest of the way, which made me compromise and have Chitranna also. I started after having a five minute nap.

As time is passing by, it is getting colder. The breeze touching my face is too fierce. Also I started battling with sleep. As route seemed to be uphill entirely, it appeared that time is passing very slowly. Further two hours I was only partially awake. I desperately waited for a company as I believed that talking with someone will keep me awake, but I got no luck. I tried having two instant coffee which didn't work. Additionally, it has put me to 30 mins of unsatisfied sleep.

After sometime I saw some riders from 200,300 brms going back to Bangalore. I tried to tag with few 300 riders. I couldn't keep up with their pace, so I had to be alone again. This time not realising, I slept on bicycle completely, while continuing to ride! I was suddenly getting awake by occasional honking by heavy vehicles. I tried to stop but it seemed a bad idea to stop in open cold air. Moments later, I suddenly opened my eyes and I saw a pile of stones being hit by my bicycle!

        Damn!! A crash...

Congrats on your achievement. I got back on the saddle couple of years ago after a gap of more than 20 years (last rode a cycle in school). It was a real struggle but after a couple of months, I attempted my first Brevet (200 km). Though I completed the 200 km, I overshot the 13.5 Hour time limit by 7 mins and did not qualify. I will attempt again when the next 200 km Brevet in Goa coincides with my leave.

It was a real struggle but after a couple of months, I attempted my first Brevet (200 km). Though I completed the 200 km, I overshot the 13.5 Hour time limit by 7 mins and did not qualify. I will attempt again when the next 200 km Brevet in Goa coincides with my leave.
Thanks Peter. Very happy to know that you are back on saddle and rode in a brevet too.
You have Managalore,Hubli,Pune and Mumbai around you, just in case if you want to ride in a brevet again soon. Also you need not wait for someone to conduct. Go on your own 100 or 200 rides which doesn't effect your leave. Goa is no short beautiful landscapes , isn't it ?
