Smile A 2750km Solo - round trip to Home for Christmas and New Years on my Duke 390!

The very first time I set my foot on Mumbai soil 4 years back I thought I would go back Home to Coimbatore one day on my bike may be after I get a transfer back to Tamil nadu or it would be just a trip home for some holidays. For the past one year now on every Sunday when I’m returning to my place after roaming around the whole day I would just feel I should take the eastern expressway and head to Coimbatore but the fact that I had an Apache RTR 180 never made me feel comfortable to do it! I have always felt Apache wouldn't be a comfortable bike for such a long journey (my personal opinion, I know guys who do very long trips on it). It's brilliant in the city though. I have done short trips (~250kms) but never really felt it’s meant for long rides. I always had my back hurting and the bike feels strained at speeds above 90kmph. I badly wanted a bike which can do speeds around 110kmph all day long without breaking a sweat!

Just when I was getting really desperate for a decent sub-400cc bike, the news of the launch of the Duke390 broke out and I had my whole focus on that even though the Honda 400/500 trio really attracted my attention. I booked the Duke soon after its launch knowing waiting for the Honda is no good and no way will they price it as competitive as the Duke since it’s a twin. After a 3 month wait I finally laid my hands on this beauty on November 1st 2013 and I immediately knew I was going home (Coimbatore) on this one day but dint know it will happen very soon!

Come December, I had to plan my trip home for Christmas and New Year but it wasn’t possible till I completed my “tasks” at office and by the time I could even plan, the air tickets had sky rocketed!!! That’s when I thought this is it! Both my brother in law and my nephew started to talk about it and every time I spoke to my nephew he just had one thing to tell me, “Maama, come on your bike”. So that’s how I finally made up my mind to do this trip which would be 2750kms in total!!!

Once the decision was made, lot of doubts started arising like “Would I be able to do such a long trip since it’s been quite some time now that I did a major trip, my best being ~500kms in a day”, “What about the windblast” and the list went on. But with inspiration from riders like @Sachinnair, @vbarnabas, @aargee, @J.Ravi, @harikeshpk to name a few and able guidance from other seasoned riders I just thought I just have to hit the road and everything will fall in place!

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
    The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

    THE END

The starters seemed interesting, waiting for the main course..

Onward Journey: Day 1 (Mumbai to Bangalore 1015kms)

There was no doubt that I would be taking the regular route but I still wanted to get it confirmed with Sachin and even asked him for advice on how to do a 1000km ride on a single day. As expected prompt came the reply which was very useful, thank you once again @Sachinnair.

Trying to pose with my Duke

On December 23rd, I got up at 4:20am, had a quick bath, coffee, breakfast and I started my journey at 5:25 am on a chilly morning with no idea what was I in for!!! Thinking that the inner lining (for rain) of my riding jacket would be good enough for the morning chill and I set out! As soon I hit the eastern expressway it was very cold and I could immediately feel that Ive got it completely wrong. Just went on since I dint want to go back home and felt that it is a matter of 2 hours before its going to be alright. Again I was wrong and the morning chill wore on even on the highways after pune, it was very foggy and cold.

    During my first stop

I had to put up with this till it was 9 o clock and by that time I had got used to the cold and riding was helping since stopping was making me shiver and I was shivering when I made my first call home! After Satara I started to maintain a steady 110 120kmph with short bursts of more speeds.

I made the common mistake of not hydrating myself enough and in addition to that the fact that I had to brave the cold during the morning gave me a head ache by the time I wanted to stop for lunch. All that I wanted is a secluded place on the highway and decent food. After riding for a little more at around 1pm I set my eyes on Kamat restaurant just before Dharwad.

    Duke at the parking lot

While parking the security asked me where am I coming from and hearing that Im coming from Mumbai he kept a hand on his head and murmured something in Kanada and when I said Im on my way to Bangalore he just shook his head in disbelief and said Sir please go and have lunch still shaking his head . After a nice South Indian thali and coffee I set out for the remainder of the trip with slight headache, but all that I could feel at that moment was I was better off riding than doing anything else. The bike was perfect, roads too good and the heart willing to just keep riding!

My lunch break was about 45 minutes, soon after I started and just when I was settling into a soothing 90-100kmph cruising mode I saw another D390 behind me flashing his lights and came over to my side after acknowledging each other I was just trailing him for sometime before he pulled over. He had the Viaterra saddle bag which was hanging on to the bike precariously. We spoke for a while and I learnt that he is from Bangalore and he was returning from Kolhapur after his friends wedding. Since it was soon after my long lunch break and I dint want to lose any more time I told I have to get moving since I wanted to hit Bangalore as early as possible.

I still had another 420kms to cover and it was already around 2:30pm and the direct Sun wasnt helping. This is to me the loneliest times you face during a trip like this: Direct sun, just you and the roads (you hardly see another vehicle) with the constant sound of your bike, You tend to get into a time of musing over the past. I just did that and I chose to muse over things which had happened in the recent past and I had lots! Another hour and half of riding on pretty good roads I stopped for another Fuel stop. It was around 4pm and my head was aching badly, drank lots of water popped in some chocolates and started once again with just one thought in mind I had to complete my mission! Surprisingly my back wasnt hurting, only the neck was paining a bit but nothing compared to the headache.
I stopped at a bakery somewhere before Chitradurga and had coffee and biscuits, applied lots of amrutanjan on my forehead and neck before I started once again. The roads were just too good after Chitradurga and I completely forgot about the pain and started thoroughly enjoying the ride and was doing good speeds and in no time I reached Tumkur but it was then I realized what a guzzler the bike is above certain speeds. I had to refuel in a span of two hours and had covered only around 180kms, any speeds above 120kmph the bike is a guzzler.

    Almost there

Well past Tumkur and around 50kms from my destination I stopped one final time for a coffee. The following pic was taken during this stop

It was 7:30pm when I entered Bangalore, stopped at a place called yeswanthpur and called my friend with whom I had planned to stay with to ask for directions. It was exactly 999kms on my trip odo, I dint know it will reset to 0 then thought I should have clicked a pic on 999. Then started the most painful stretch, it was just 16 km to his house from that point but with so many one ways, bad roads, few roads blocked and in addition to it I took the wrong route couple of times. Finally reached his place at 8:15pm and my odo read 1015kms. Mission accomplished!

    Stats of the day:
    Total kms: 1015km
Time taken: 14hrs (Not considering the time to get into the city)
    Petrol: 39ltrs
Toll on the body: Only neck pain and head ache, No back pain at all
After a sumptuous dinner at a restaurant near MG road, went to sleep feeling accomplished and happy J
