By the way, is there a good online trail finding site like singletracks.com that works for india?

While I'm a purely Rodie I think I can add my 2bits to the conversation.

1) Don't go by specs purely, it misleads you into looking mostly on components and not much beyond that.
2) Frame & wheels is where attention is usually lost which actually makes the biggest difference. as Components can be upgraded later.
3) Fix your requirement atleast for the next 6months 1yr, what type of riding will you do, how far you think you will go... this will help you choose what kind of bike is required.

And I'm totally lost on MTB bike models I can suggest you a brand called "Furan" which is launched by a person who's made some pretty decent Roadbike Steel Frames by the name "Psynide" You can check it out, He's also highly experienced in making special components for MTB races so his breath of experience is wide.

I'm almost decided on the scott. One question... the scott user guide states that the bike is meant for jumps lower than 0.5 meters... will i void the warranty if i do something higher?

I'm having second thoughts on the scott... it seems to have lower specs than the others... I'm constantly scouting cyclop and I'm looking for better bikes and also on raising the budget to 30k. What do you think? Isn't the tourney too low and i have heard TERRIBLE reviews on some zoom forks. Are all zoom forks bad?

And psynide's site is down.

Kaushik...THANKS A TON... i called psynide with the number from their Facebook page... the specs are top of the line.... the base price is 36k but they offered a 20% discount so I'll pay ~29k.

I don't think there is a website like that for India. None that i know of. Your best bet is to find people in and around your area who can guide you, both for routes and for general cycling knowledge.

Here in Delhi, i found a couple of groups called PedalYatri and Aravalli Trail Hunters. Best find till date!

Congrats in advance on choosing a real good bike I didn't suggest the Psynyde because it was way out of your initial budget A friend of mine driftjockey bought the Furan with the Deore build. So far he has liked it!

From the experience of seeing quite a few hapless souls on the trails with a Tourney equipped bike. That would have just broken up on the climbs as you gained leg strength. Like i mentioned earlier, trails can be brutal for the bike and rider

What is the waiting period for the Furan? Have you booked it yet?
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

I haven't ordered. Waiting for may. Need a wee bit more money to the bike fund. Sticking to just a bike, helmet, glove and toolkit for now.

And psynide doesn't have any distributors in kerala so they will ship the bike themselves.... i might even get it signed by the designer praveen. I called and spoke to him. Great guy

And anyway...
Till i get the bike i guess it's a game of waiting and daydreaming i suppose.

Another thing: psynide is offering a 20% off on the furan. I don't know if it's available for the other states though.

Thank you all for helping me...

Forever indebted

I have an update
And unfortunately it ain't happy

Mom got into a high Court case challenging her asst. Prof. Appointment.. so i had to give my bike money to her to pay for the lawyer's fees. So I'm delaying the psynide purchase. But i still need a bike for commutes so I'll get a mach city munich...

I guess it's more savin time... by the way... the furan is still my target... and sometimes soon I'll try to meet up with the psynide team when they come to Bangalore to race...
