• Beginner level: Help me in buying a bike under 15000

I am a big follower of this site and almost go through its forums daily. Recently i have developed a interest in cycling and want to buy one. I am complete new in this regard. I don't even know how its gears work. So let me give you few more details and then you guys can help me out.

Physique: Height - 5.5 feet without shoes, weight - 75kgs

Budget: 12-13k max

Usage: Daily morning rides of 10-20kms. I will start with less kms as i am not used to cycling, but will build up on it over time. Will also go on longer tours on weekends. I live in pimple saudagar, pune. So lonavla hills are close to me in 50kms distance.

Questions:
1. steel frames and alloy frames - How important is it at my level?
2. I have heard that cycles under 20k are not good and their gears get broken very often. How true is that?

So please with me all this and any more tips/advices apart from this are also welcome.

1. Check out Decathlon in your city

2. Increase your budget
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Thanks for quick reply.

1. Surely i will check out the decathlon store.
2. Regarding budget, i have read that there are beginner level ones available under 15k. I can upgrade gradually, right? Like a bike, you start with 150-200cc then go to 500-600 then litre ones.

My intention for first year of cycle will not be for very long distance rides. Once i get hang of cycling then i will see if long distance on a cycle is for me or not.
Also please help of steel or aluminium alloy frame from a beginner's use perspective. How important is this?

I have seen a lot of people buying 'entry level bikes' and then trying to sell it off within a week Either because they have given up on the hope of cycling or because they want to buy a better bike.

Yes, you would want to go from a 150cc to a 600cc and then a litre class. But would you want to go from a XL100 to a Splendor then to a Discover 125, then a Unicorn 160 then a Pulsar 180, then a... ... you get my drift

If you can up your budget i would suggest the Psynyde Oxygen from Pune itself! A bike I just recommended to another xBhpian on a different cycle thread. It will be incredible value for money at the pre-order price.

If you cannot increase your budget then i would suggest going to Decathlon and pick up whatever feels right for you. Do ensure you get the correct size though. Most Decathlon bikes are good VFM.

You can also check out the Mach City within your original budget.

Whichever cycle you buy, i hope you pedal your heart out

Thanks Monk for you reply. I will be checking trackntrail and few more shops in my area this weekend and also decathlon. Decathlon is very far from my place. Ofcourse i can buy it from there but will my local cycle repair shop be able to do any repair on cycle if required. Minor stuff i can do diy but for complex stuff i am not sure. Please advice on this front.

Nothing on a cycle is complex. Any cycle shop can repair any cycle. It is a different thing that they might refuse since you didn't buy it from them. Honestly though i haven't heard of any shop which has refused to service a bike, at least here in Delhi.

I went to lots of cycle shops today and have zeroed in on montra downtown. Here is link to the site for your reference.

I am getting it for 12.5k. Size and height suits me nicely. Also i will get the perfect fitting done during delivery which will be on diwali.

I am planning to get a helmet and lock for now and will add accessories later on. Any other accessories that I should get immediately. My intended purpose will be completely tarmac based for starters not going beyond 20-30kms for atleast another 3-4months.

5-6K as of now. Can invest more with time after putting some miles on.

Congrats

Do tell us how you find the bike after you use it

Helmet is most essential. Lock you only require if you are planning to park your bike in public places. I haven't ever used a lock because my bike is always parked right under my nose Or inside my house!

You can start off with sneakers and regular shorts and tees whatever you have at home. You can go on adding to that.

One other thing that i do recommend getting with the bike are lights front and rear. Especially the rear.

monk: I have read that we should not use running shoes for cycling as it might give pain after a while because of its soft soles.
How about woodland shoes? They are a bit on heavier side though.

Yup. Running shoes are not the best for cycling. Cycling has dedicated footwear. But for starters you can use any kind of shoes which have a hard sole. The stiffer the sole the better. The reason being, if the sole is too soft, the pedal presses against certain parts of your foot and over time it will hurt. But if the sole is stiff, then the power from your leg is diffused over the entirety of the sole and not just on the contact point.

But for a commuter, if you have nice big broad platform pedals, then even sneakers will do the job. You can always upgrade when you start clocking some serious miles.

Woodlands would be too heavy. You want the lightest that you can find.
