Hi guys,
I was thinking of buying a Cycle for myself to get into shape. I shortlisted Firefox target or Viper, which of the 2 is better ? If there is any other alternative let me know about it too.

^^^In that budget you will get some decent hybrids. Schwinns and all. Since you live in Bangalore you might also get some good second hand deals. Also check with Venky from a shop called wheelsports. Good reputation he has of fair and helpful dealing.

I am looking for a cycle mainly for Offroad driving (in farm) and occasional short runabouts in city I have these 2 in mind which one is better? Firefox Dart 2.6 disc 21gears n Hercules Torrent 21gears

Thank u, Its slightly over my budget but I guess worth it coz it will be light weight without rear suspension, I would like to have the disc version, are the discs reliable?

I am a complete noob when it comes to modern bicycles. But, want to take it up seriously.
A question for Monk and others, what is my option if my budget is 10k and my purpose would be mostly on-road occasional off-road usage.
I am based in Gurgaon so even normal roads can be an off-roaders paradise sometimes

Any pointers on the make of bike and where to buy in Gurgaon would be of great help.

At this price point, personally I wouldn't go for discs. Regular v-brakes are safer, easier to maintain and just as effective.

If you want to take it up seriously, then you will have to seriously increase your budget!

I would suggest a Hybrid. If you are mostly going to be riding on roads, however bad. When you say off-road, do you mean hardcore trails or just getting off the road!!

Instead of Gurgaon, I suggest you ride down to Ghitorni. There are 2-3 shops there, including Firefox which sells Trek bikes. Though I have had a very good experience with Cyclofit. You can test ride different cycles and take your pick.

If you need a reason to convince yourself to buy a good bike, then you are welcome to ride my Trek 4300 (even though it is an MTB). There is a FB page for buying second hand cycles in Delhi, you can check that out as well. Second hand bikes are very good VFM.

Buy the latest issue of the xBhp magazine, available in Galleria and Vyapar Kendra in Gurgaon, you will get loads of info for a newbie cyclist!

Thanks for the pointers. I wish to do hardcore trail-riding someday(enjoyed it on the RockShox in the 90s during summers

) but truth be told, i am not sure if i will ever make the effort required to justify the money i would put in. Hence, was thinking about a budget cycle first and then maybe upgrade later on if i get into it seriously. Will check out the magazine and the shops. If not convinced, will definitely take up the offer to ride your Trek 4300

Well, where there is a wish there is a way

Then chuck the Hybrid and buy a MTB.

The reason why I wouldn't recommend buying a cheap cycle first and then upgrading, is that if you buy a cheap cycle, you will ride for a few days and then give up. If not you would have wasted money since you would have to scrap it and get a proper bike.

On the other hand, when you spend 30k to buy a bike, you damned well will wake up every morning to ride. Just remembering the price tag will be motivation enough!! Also the better bikes are so smooth to ride that you will never want to ride an El Cheapo ever again.

This thread was an eye opener - specially for guys like me whose last cycle was around 2k Rs in the late 90s.

Finally, bought the Firefox Target - 21 Speed. Was swinging between Schwinn Frontier and this, but finally, went for the cheaper and better looking alternative

At less than 12kg, its very light too.

Initial experience:
Scary in gurgaon traffic. Apart from all the motorized bullies, the lack of a rear mirror is really a big problem, with me frequently checking my "non existent" mirrors to understand whats behind me. While turning, i actually felt around for indicators

Took a small off-road detour and loved the composure of the bike.

Upgrades planned
1. Rear view mirror
2. Head and tail-light
3. Alloy pedals (supposedly the plastic pedals are not very reliable)

@Monk: Thanks for your inputs. Biwi would have none of the second hand business. "Cycle !! Secondhand! "

Congrats sir. Today I had gone for the g2g at the xbhp dhaba cycling. Got a chance to hop on after many days. One person even asked me for my 'keys' to ride my cycle

Mirrors, horn, indicators are some of the things a biker looks for. The Pahadi Raasta in Gurgaon is a good place to pedal early in the morning in Gurgaon.
