@ Hitanshu: I understand your concern. True you are in saying that we perhaps can not send the stuff by road owing to the conditions. Furthermore, I am not sure, how we can Airlift the stuff and deliver it in Leh, we need to seek a lot of assistance from the concerned department. Point well taken and let me see for an alternate plan.

@ Mik: I really wonder if it will be worthwhile for any of us to go to Leh on a pleasure ride at this moment. The situation there is no good for sheer tourism.

@ All: understanding the fact that perhaps road is not the right way to reach Leh this point in time and Airway might be out of question due to budgetary constrains, how about giving non-perishable things in the likes of Clothes, Tents etc which can be shipped once the roads are any better. Further more, owing to the wonderful attitude of WE people towards the people in need ( we don’t forget to mint money sitting on people’s grave either), I would not suggest Cash Donations. I know I am being cynical with this but lets not forget that Cash tends to be used in not-the-right-direction. Hence, Clothes, Tents, books etc. can be donated after packing them decently, so that they do not get worse by the time they reach their destination. The BRO and the Army are putting their best foot forward in reconstructing the road links, though it may take some time. In the mean time, like minded people can collect the stuff to be delivered to Leh and once the roads are any better, the same can be transported to the destination. The money toward the logistic part can again come from the volunteers, but I would suggest no cash donations.

P.S: I might have sounded offensive to some, but its hurting to see large amount of public money going into constructing palaces for the bureaucrats. Hence, my suggestion of not giving help in CASH. Rather, give things that can be utilized by the needy.

Not to promote my company, but this is an extract of a circular which was sent out to all employees.

So it looks like they need blankets, tarpaulin and hygiene kits.

As far as collecting money or the logistics involved in actually sending over some stuff is concerned, I think lets thrash out how we will actually send this stuff.
Maybe we could concentrate on hygiene kits (considering that they are small and wouldn't be too tough to ship) But who will look after the logistics in Leh. We need some people there who can ensure that it goes to the right hands.
Guys, considering that we come from different backgrounds like pharma, medical, transport, software, business.. do pour in your thoughts as to how to procure this stuff and ship it.

In addition to acting as per the suggestions above (once we conclude on the 'right' way to go about it), I've also made a video in a bid to raise awareness on the issue.

            Good job there Alankar.

Lets plan a G2G for this effort. But first, lets find out about logistics. I will try and contact a friend of mine in the army posted in Uddhampur right now. Let us see if Army can help in transporting stuff and add our donations to the material they are supplying.

Guys, last-mile delivery to the needed is a challenge in such an activity. Unless we can have a confirmation with someone who can get the last-mile delivery done in time and appropriately, we'd better donate our collective fund to one or two choosen NGO's who are doing the task already.

Just my two cents. I did not go through the whole thread... so, please excuse my ignorance.

Just a few weeks back I was drenched in the serinity of Ladakh. I am feeling pretty bad for what happened to Ladakh. It is a very very fragile eco-system.

I have few blankets and cloths..not woolen though..if we aren't going to donate cash, I can send it to the reponsible person after we decide how we are going to transport the material..

However, I think we can donate both funds and other materials (blankets, cloths, hygiene kits) depending on the user's preference. For those who want to donate funds, we have a senior xbhp's member's account, to which we can transfer..and for those who wanna donate other material, we can have one xbhp member's address..then the collective funds can be handed out to a NGO or to a Ladakh official directly if we are gonna transport the materials ourselves..

DCS, I sent you an email with details I got from a NGO.

Though I understand that the efforts here are not to collect cash but things in kind, I think that whatever we donate in kind should be of good and usable quality. Please do not donate clothes, which are torn. Just send stuff which you would wear yourself. I am not saying new Levis jeans but a Rs 500 new jeans is better than your old and torn levis.

I am attaching a list of things that organisation 'Save the children is providing'. I have asked them if we can donate such stuff directly i.e. you buy these kits and give it to them. Waiting for their reply.

@Tarc: I appreciate your offer but do you think blankets which are not warm would be of much use to those people? Just a thought. Though if you do send across good and usable stuff, I am making efforts to find out who can get it delivered to leh.

PS: Let us not start to fight over little stuff over here.

Whatever efforts we have to make, lets make it quick. How about doing it on Feb 15th G2G?

Our company is also working with the same charity "Save our Children"
If anybody wants to donate in cash, they can do so on the link

Donate Online to NGOs in India. Donate for all causes in all Indian states with many donation options

I believe that the logistics involved in sending over usable stuff is not easy for individuals and considering that the stuff is needed there asap, its best if we could tie-up with an NGO(A reputed one) and get this done.

There are some reports of diseases breaking out(a common fall-out of natural calamities) so if someone here has any contacts with pharma industries/wholesale then please work out if cheaper medicines can be sourced out. Of course, this should be done only if we have the logistics in place.

                              +1 to that.

Please donate in cash or kind (new stuff).

Are you guys collecting in kind? Because kind donations from xbhp can be collected and added to what your organization might be contributing and I will get it all delivered to Save the children

I have pledged my 1 day salary for this cause. But there appears to be a problem. When I click on Save The Children NGO link the site throws an error. Kindly ask concerned person to look into the matter as it may send wrong message. I think it is because the NGO is still not registered on that website.

I have even circulated an email regarding this in my office. Hopefully my colleagues will respond to it positively !!
