Night Riding Tips

Night riding should be avoided. Ride only if it really necessary. I seriously don't understand why people would want to ride at nights, fully knowing the dangers involved. If you ask me, riding at night without an accident is 50% luck and 50% skill. I did a Goa-Bangalore at night in winter a couple of years ago and I had issues with the mist/fog. Also, the trucks/buses just blind our eyes with high beam always on. Bad roads/sudden deviations/stray objects all add to the danger. At one point, even I was very excited and thrilled to ride on lonely highways at night, that too solo. But, soon I realised that it was plain dangerous. So, IMHO, avoid riding at night and ride only when it is absolutely necessary. Also, bunch up in a convoy and ride, at a safe speed.

depth perception there? ^+1Originally posted by atulaherwar View Post.... i read some where that a brown-turnin yellow visor maintains the death perception capability even at nite.... help here
I haven't tried a brown bordering on yellow-amber visor yet. As a generic observation:
1. Fog lamps are yellow,
2. ski, boating, sport shooting googles, are brown -yellow.
3. men in armored vehicles & tanks wear yellow goggles.
Somewhere in the Helmet thread I read that Silver visors are next best thing to clear visors in the night.
Update: Morning Mist & Brown-Amber tint. 11:23 AM 2/23/2009
We started driving in the morning, dawn light conditions in Kodagu, 6.30 am. Sunrise is at 6.45 am.
Without glasses: The glare from the fog is harsh, pierces the eyes, made us wince.
With the typical dark glasses: Felt like 5 A.M.
With Ray-Ban Aviator brandy tint: Wow! Crisp vison. Could spot the silhouettes in the fog better. Static objects appeared like they'll come to life & walk towards us. So yellow can only be better than brownLast edited by TomSawyer; 02-23-2009, 12:25 PM. Reason: Morning Mist & Brown-Amber tint. 11:23 AM 2/23/2009Kaveriappa

When I went for my trip from Manipal - Delhi I made sure every side of my bike, front, left, right, back had some sort of reflective markers on it. The First Kit even had a + Sign in reflective. I cut out more pieces of reflective material to glue them to my helmet also. Very important @ Night. To be seen. I wasn't driving @ night but twilight is just as important.
Get a proper jacket with reflective strips if possible. About the douche-bags @ nights with high beams this is what I have to say to them. Can;t do nothing, just focus on the side.
Nice list. The Yellow glasses help a ton. BUt the visor thing is really a prob. Esp when it's raining.Kanwar @ http://kanwars.blogspot.com

Visibility is of paramount importance in dusk. The aircraft carrier deck marshals seen on Discovery wear yellow, orange vests. & watersport lifejackets are of same color.
I'd rather dress like a clown & get noticed
, than being passed of as a background object. Some research finding said the following color attract the least attraction: [unverified source, no heated debates pls
, but appears true.]
a. Black
b. Dark green
c. Navy blue
These three colors are the 'recommended not suitable' for personal automobiles as they attract the least attention, and are likely to be regarded as `background clutter' by other people.Kaveriappa

Very very true guys... night driving requires more concentration...
A little from my side... i got my FZ16 on 16th feb 2009. on the same day i went to my home which is 300+kms from the place were i am staying and working... on the way which is almost 200+km... i felt a little sleepy and tired so i rushed to reach the home as soon as possible... i increased the speed and overtaked many vehicles on the drive while i was overtaking a lorry i saw another vehicle from the other side coming which has only one headlamp on... i mistook it was a two wheeler and rushed through the right and suddenly saw it was another lorry which has only one eye on...
damn... a lightning went through my throught and applied the brakes and turned to the left... i was in between the the two lorries and it passed just to me... if i have turned my handle a little bit i will be no more... i felt like i was in between two beasts...
The biggest comedy is that after that my tiredness and sleepy was gone and got a good concentration... ha ha ha...
The long drive was quite superb except this incident...

My Take!
some one just said riding in night without an accident is 50% luck and 50% skill or whatever.
well, Mate...when you are riding a two wheeler, you are already at 100% risk so no fun in debating it over.
Riding in night is again a sheer matter of choice.
Yes, there are a lot of down sides of night riding but then again, lets look at the brighter side.
At night, you generally wont see people crossing road with a LOTA in hand to reduce their weight( read-POTTY TIME FOLKS!), also, there would be little or no slow moving traffic.
yes, it involves lot of concentartion but then again, who says that you dont need to concentarte on raod during Day riding.
I have been enjoying solo night rides/drives for some 13 odd years now. I dont ride/drive too fast at night but yes, I manage decent enough speed. I would anytime love to Ride at night in comparision to Day riding though nothing against people who are Totally -ve about it. Cheers! Its not about the BHP or the CC, its about one common religion called Biking!!!

I have had the worst possible accident at night time&due to that I avoid it most of the time. However, when absolutely necessary, I use a plain visor perfectly cleaned before starting the ride. No use dipping for trucks etc.they just don't care. Best is to slow down&move to the left side if they are oncoming to avoid the blinding.
Even then, potholes are almost invisible once the speed increases, so best is to go below 60. I recently lost a whole bunch of keys due to a pothole which was not visible at all at around 5:30 a.m.
I would say, as far as possible, avoid!

There is only one tip for night riding. Avoid it !!!!
In Noida, the predators at night are the Rickshaw wallahs who will be coming at the opposite direction in the high speed lane. I try to be aware of my surroundings while driving, but at night, its very difficult and things get left to chance.
Faced with high beams, i go through a three step process.
1. Frantic use of my dippers.
2. Get to the middle of the road.
3. Slow down and try to peer ahead beyond the beam.
Though i do wish i could drag these pathetic car wallahs out of their cars and give a good kick or two to those who dont understand the concept of dippers.

P.S. wats a reflective lens visor.... n is photo-cromatic visor worth all the money......
and also yellow-orange colored visors seems to intersify the headlight we see since its of same intensity n color.... rather it has a blinding effect... id say..its better to see things n then nt to look at it directly...

Mik,
Interesting but over-cautious thoughts. There's a pleasure of night riding, which is quite honestly indescribable and is much less hassled by traffic.
Lights are important. The only submission is to try a different tack - ride till the FIRST sign of fatigue and pull over asap. Thereafter a good nap. Preventive naps don't work for me.
And NO food etyadi. Glucose in my system is like a sleeping drug.
PS: Each one to his own. I have done over 20k km of touring on my caliber in postgrad days - pretty much starting out everytime at 2-3am Saturday, and back by Sunday dinnertime. I'm a major time fan of night time travel
PPS: Avoid unsafe roads
PPPS: Take good care of your visor/eyes. Like OP said, never ride beyond your luck/vision
