  • WTF moments while riding.

Not sure if there's a thread for this already. I wanted to share an incident that had me totally stumped, wide eyed with disbelief and involuntarily exclaiming WTF.

So, yesterday, I was riding along the rain lashed roads of Bangalore, trying to make my way home amidst the chaotic evening rush hour traffic, made more chaotic by the sudden downpour and its aftermath.

At one junction along my route, a usually busy intersection on Jayamahal Road, I was waiting for the signal to go green. Then the WTF moment happened, diehard 4.0 style. My signal went green, but so did the signals for the other 3 sides of the intersection! Actually, it didnt just go green, it lit up the red, yellow and green lights, all at the same time, for all the sides. WTF!

I was dazzled by the signal's impressive light show and applauded with a round of honking at the cops manning it. But 2 sheep brained bikers on my side of the road apparently saw only the green light (a fine example of selective thinking) and immediately rushed off into the middle of the intersection, only to be touche'd by a similar thinking car coming from the right. WTF x2!!!! Thankfully, they all saw the other and slowed down enough to avoid a crash.

The 2 bikers brushed it off like it was nothing and just sped their way on to the next signal. Following this show of 'bravado', the other vehicles in my road and the perpendicular road began strong-arming each other for the right of way. WTF x3!!!! 'My' side won due to the sheer number of vehicles blocking off the intersecting road and started marching forward along its hard won path. Not wanting to resist the force of the torrent of traffic behind me (and also to get the heck out of there ASAP), I also followed suit and couldn't stay around to see how this traffic management fiasco would end.

Does anyone else have any riding related WTF stories to share?

I searched for similar threads but couldn't find them. If anyone finds a similar thread, let me know so I can merge them. Thanks.

      Let's start with signals...

Signals are weird; once I witnessed this at Thirumangalam junction, when the lights were turned RED & still people were still moving like an ice glacier & all of us were stood frozen not knowing what to do. All this happened while there were 2 constables manning the signal.

Don't we witness this in the entire country?

PS - Want a conclusion of the above story? Finally when the constables managed to stop the flow of other traffic, the light turned RED for us & needless to say, people who were aggravated jumped the RED signal

          Bwahahaha!

No idea if this happens often or anywhere else, but for me, it was the first time that I saw all signals malfunction at a junction. The potential for a huge accident was there. Thankfully, none happened.

This happened once i was riding my bike to my office which is out of chennai to the north(near minjur) around 25kms from Anna Nagar. Anyways there is lot of truck/container traffic near the last 10 kms. On last Tuesday in the morning there was very less traffic. So i was going at 70-80kmph. Then at a distance i see a container on the road which was totally perpendicular to road. And guess what it had got faulty and stuck there. There was no place to cross it. A person was repairing something which one can spot in the pic below towards rear of the truck cabin.

Good it was morning and traffic was less, otherwise a big traffic jam could have been there.

I stopped and took a click of the scene. One can see how the truck had blocked the road. It looked as if some tamil movie shooting was going on and some biker/horse rider will come anytime and do a slide under the trailer.

Man you missed a great chance, should have tried your luck completing the stunt.
(fun intended bro, don't take it hard)

BTW, there is no limits for such instances on our Indian Roads isn't it.

Oh ya! Had one with the signal at the Goregaon flyover - SV Road junction.
The signals go clockwise so I just missed getting across in the previous round so had to wait for the entire circle to complete for my signal to go green. But lo behold! Sheepishly, my signal didn't turn green, it skipped and went on to the other signal. This went on for 3 rounds and by now the incessant honking and ensued and the traffic cops bemused and unsure of what was happening. But before they could realise, the lights turned green finally and the traffic started moving. Never have I witnessed this before but now that I think of it, its funny (Wasn't when I was stuck there for 15 mins only because the light wouldn't go green!)

Just came back after seeing a wackiest accident in front of my office gate...

                  Participants (actual sequence on road):
1.Rickshaw 1 (trying to zoom-off from a stand still position),
2.My colleague in his Honda City (trying to enter the office gate),
                  3. Rickshaw 2 (at speeds a rickshaw can run at but cannot be controlled/braked-to-halt),
4.A family in Swift (enjoying their drive)
5.What happened?panchnaama, and guess what, my colleague driving his Honda City was declared as guilty for irresponsible driving (WTF !?)

The police must have thought your friend is the only guy here who is rich enough to pay a bribe, so lets put the blame on him...
Some time back i was in an accident and the police let the drunken driver go, and seized my bike instead... ass holes...

Bribe ! But why !? For what reason !? For driving sensiblly !? For not running from the spot of action !?
If they (the police) can't find the guilty, why punish innocent !?

PS: He is not my friend. Just a colleague from a different (i don't know which) team.

This happened to me around 3 weeks back when i was out on a Sunday Morning Ride.

I met up with the other riders which included KTM and Ninja owners and we were heading towards Kolar. On one particular stretch, the highway opened up and i was last in the line of bikes so proceeded to accelerate and overtake the others. The traffic was sparse, almost no one else apart from us and another bike or two on this stretch at around 6 or 6.30 am.

As i accelerated, i glanced the needle climbing and going past 145kmph. I was on the fast lane (right most lane, just next to the median/divider) and suddenly a dog stepped down from the bushes on the divider onto the road right into my lane. I was barreling down the road and immediately applied the front brake. After 2 track days and lots of riding, practice taught me not to grab or jab the brakes but apply pressure consistently to avoid a wheel lock.

Yet, the front wheel did lock, albeit slightly. Two screech sounds from the front tire and the bright headlight of my bike scared the dog and it immediately vanished into the bushes. Luckily for me the dog was few feet ahead of me. WTF moment for sure !!! My heart was pounding. If I had fallen i would have got injured badly inspite of my gear cos there was another bike behind me at triple digits.

I can still visualize it. Freeze frame moment it was. Phew. From the time i saw the dog and to the time it fled it was only two seconds at the most, but to me it felt like time had slowed down drastically. I was seeing this in slow-mo.

I have to admit i was target fixated on the dog for a wee second but no way i could have swerved away to avoid hitting it. God saved me that day. Phew! I'm sure the dog also is thinking the same.

                        Ride safe guys.

The most scariest nearmiss i had was on my way from mt.abu . I was coming back from Palanpur-A'bad-Mum road and was riding behing VW Vento , we were cruising around 142-143kmph and i kept a good dist between us . Soon i saw there were 5-6 truck driving close to each-other in center (middle) Lane Vento guy zipped past them @ 145+ and then i too decided to do same , But all of sudden a Truck jumped into fast lane to overtake other trucks . I was doing more than 140+ . I braked hard as i could Rear wheel got locked few secs and somehow i managed to drop my speed @ around 65-69kmph. After that i overtook that truck driver and then we had nice friendly talk for good 2-3mins and then i moved on .
Its not enough to know how to twist the throttle; you must have judgement to know when and where to do it.

I remember one of the incidents that I had while returning home from the GIR2 meetup at Kamsheth. We were 5-6 riders riding and i was the second last one with one of my friends trailing me. We were following a Santro doing speeds of around 90-100kmph.
I am not sure what happened but the left rear wheel of Santro got locked in middle of nowhere and had a screeching halt in the middle of the road. The driver somehow managed it to take it to the left end of the highway. But man that was damn scary. Fortunately both of us were at a comfortable distance from the car so nothing much happened expect from a WTF moment!!!
                            Expect The UnExpected!!!

                              My WTF! moment.

This happened 3 months back in Rajainagar 6th block bangalore around 11PM while coming from office, thanks to BBMP(Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagar Palike) for putting a hump without any white paint. Daily i travel on this road, So i know each and every hump and patholes(big ones ). Since there was very less traffic i was going at 60kays and was dark even though my bike headlight was on i could not see the hump then i hit the hump with that speed and was in the air . Thanks to this stupid hump which was ready to grab it's first victim. But nothing happened i landed safely on both wheels and cursed bbmp ppl's mother and grandmother and some relatives(you know wat i mean). Surely it was my first WTF moment.
