  • Parkour - An Urban Religion

Recently I have been reading, watching videos, browsing through the websites about a new thing called as "Parkour/Free Running" and my interest has grown in it which has led me to start off a thread about it here.
Many of us might/might not be knowing about this relatively new art/philosophy/etc.
You must have seen a part of it in some of the Hollywood movies like "Casino Royale", "B13", etc.
Some Bollywood movies have also showcased this art like "Kidnap, etc". You might remember the Thumbs Up ad from Akhshay Kumar.

For those who do not know about I don't want to define it in my own sentences, rather putting the definition from the american parkour website:
    What is Parkour?

Parkour is a method of training the mind and body. A parkour practitioner, called a traceur (male) or traceuse (female), uses their surroundings to improve their ability to move in space. By interacting with obstacles, be they urban architecture or the natural environment, the practitioner becomes more comfortable controlling his body and navigating any terrain. The meat of parkour is the discipline of daily training, physical and technical, to heighten the body’s natural movement elements such as strength, speed, balance, coordination, precision, power, and endurance. The application of parkour is efficient traversal when circumstance necessitates it, such as being chased, or needing to reach a destination. While this is the practical application of the training, one could do parkour their entire lives and not ever have to use it in this way, similar to a martial artist never getting into a fight. Though it may never have to be utilized in this way, the benefits of parkour are far reaching. Being that parkour is made up of a lot of movements that are natural to the human animal, the body is strengthened evenly and synergistically, meaning all the parts of the body learn to work together. This helps to balance the body and improve all movement in general. Aside from the physical benefits, many people find training parkour develops mental clarity, confidence, self-discipline, the ability to deal with fear, and many other mental gains.

    What isn't Parkour?
Parkour is not acrobatics, tricking, stunts, recklessness, or jumping off high objects for no reason. It is not any movement or activity that doesn't fit in the above description "What Parkour Is". It is also not "What you make of it" ... it is predefined and has a purpose, if something doesn't suit that purpose, it is not Parkour.
Source: American Parkour - Parkour and Freerunning - What is Parkour?

Just wanted to share this thing with you guys and also try knowing people who already know about it or like it or may already be a part of it.

I first bumped into the American website, American Parkour - Parkour and Freerunning - Connect
In India also parkour is being practised:
    PARKOUR..INDIA..info...index

This is a great way to be in shape along with doing yoga, going to Gym, karate, etc.
You can search for the video of the same on the youtube too.

So guys do share your knowledge or views on this.

PS: One humble request, please do not give unnecessary comments without knowing about this in detail.

    OT Approved

Le Parkour has always fascinated me. One excellent example of it can be seen in the movie District B13.

      Parkour is awesome..

District 13 (Barrier 13) is a great movie showing parkour (probably among the best).. On the net, it is still widely argued that Jackie Chan was the first to bring parkour to movies.. you can pretty much see examples of it in all his movies..

There are communities in India too.. google for it ..
some groups have even uploaded some vids on youtube..

Yup, District B13's lead actor "David Belle" is an icon in this art/sport.
The concept first originated in France and picking up very fast around the world.
Yes I also feel it was Jackie Chan who introduced this in movies but at that time there was no official name for it apart from being called acrobatics which is not parkour as per the definition of Parkour.

Yes I did see the videos on youtube by Indian Parkour groups. Wonder if there is any group active in Bangalore which I could join

The only parkour I have seen is on TopGear. A couple of years ago, I guess in a race between James May and two Parkour guys in Liverpool.. seemed fun though, would want to try someday..

I have just started training, slowly building the foundation. I am able to do some basic stuff like roll, vault which would be required when I start complex stuff.

I am emphasizing mainly on physical strength so that I am able to support my body weight and momentum. It would be suicidal to try doing the moves shown in the videos with your body not prepared for it.

The video shows only the successful moves but that guy must have fallen down several times before executing perfectly. So do keep this in mind.
