    The First Ride !
I know this is something special for every rider. The feelings associated with it are very special. The nervousness, the excitment and the joy are unparalled. We all know these will not happen even again like this. We try to savor every moment of it. The smile inside the helmet when we first sit on the bike at the start is pure, the happiness is calming.*

All these happened to me. I recently did my first ride and was nervous for weeks before actually doing it. But i did it. *thank God for it**

The thoughts of some mishap were the most prominent, fatigue and what not were dominating every thought the night before the actual ride. I want to know what was going through your minds when you took your first ride!

Many of you have been riding for years, but the first ride experience, one cannot forget.

A pic from the ride: i had stopped to calm my nerves.

    Ride safe and have fun.
    Regards

Once upon a time, a guy asked a girl 'Will you marry me?'
    The girl said, 'NO!'

And the guy lived happily ever after and rode motorcycles and watched sport on a big screen TV, went fishing and surfing, and played golf a lot, and drank beer and scotch and had tons of money in the bank and left the toilet seat up and farted whenever he wanted.

    THE END

      Re: The First Ride!

^^^ I thinnk Nadeem was not talking of the first time one actually rode a motorcycle but the first proper ride out of the city.

Along those lines, my first ride was from Kanpur to Kanyakumari solo during the south indian monsoons
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

            Guys,

Why not include our first ride as in the very first time we learnt to ride. What mistakes we made and how we corrected those mistakes.. how many falls and who taught us or gave us the courage to ride and of course the very first bike we tried to ride.. of course we have different experiences with Gearless and bikes with gears..

That would be more like hilarious discussion.

The fails and the falls are what we all learn from and still do. We can sure post that. But also include about the first LONG ride.

              Ride safe and have fun.

                    Re: The First Ride!

Here's my story of how I learned to ride a bike.

It was 9 years ago; I was 14 years old and studying in class 9th. My best friend Anurag, had his uncle staying with his family. He was a college going guy and owned a pulsar classic. Both our parents were working , so we had lots of free time alone after school. Anurag's uncle taught him to ride his pulsar, and used to allow him to take a ride in the colony when his parents were at work. He became quite good at it with regular practice.

One such afternoon his uncle was visiting his parents and Anurag took the pulsar, came to my house and called me to take a ride in the town. I begged him to let me ride the bike. We used to ride bicycles together since kindergarten, so he trusted me and advised me to ride it on a downhill road with engine off, so that I could get used to the weight of the bike and using the rear brake with my foot instead of left hand. He also warned me not to touch the front brake (disc brakes).

It seemed like a sound advice to me and I sat on the saddle with Anurag as pillion. I was a skinny boy and the pulsar felt like a tank to me. But as the bike started moving the weight disappeared and we started riding downhill with engine off. It felt really good and I felt like a grown up. So after riding about 2 kms with engine off Anurag asked me to stop, kicked started the bike for me and handed it to me.

I was a gear head (like my father) from my childhood and used to help my dad service his chetak at home, so I knew everything - theoretically, and nothing practically, so needless to say I was nervous. I pulled in the clutch, slid the first gear in place, slowly released the clutch and JERK - the bike stopped. Anurag started it again and told me to give a gentle throttle as I release the clutch. I did and again the bike stopped with a jerk.

I tried again for the third time and voila the mighty pulsar started moving. But there was a problem, the bike was in first gear and if I opened the throttle, it would roar and move forward quickly with a jerk and if I released the throttle, it would stop with the same amount of force (engine breaking). The bike moved with jerks like this for a few meters, but luckily there was no wheelie.

Anurag sitting pillion shouted to shift to second gear, I immediately pulled in the clutch and engaged the second gear and ride got a bit smoother. Now I was getting the hang of it and continued riding at about 35 kmph in 4th gear for about 2-3 kms. Then I decided it was enough excitement for a single day and handed the bike back to Anurag.

As I got off the bike and handed it back to Anurag, I was sweating like a pig, my hands were paining and white, drained of blood(From holding the handle bars too tightly), my legs felt like jelly, shaking as I sat on the pillion seat, drying the sweat in the cool wind as Anurag rode us home.

I was jumping on the balls of my feet that day and my parents couldn’t guess what had made me so happy. After that day Anurag gained confidence in me and we used to take turns on the bike regularly. My parents never had a clue that I could ride a bike till 2 years later when I passed my 10th class and got my cousin brother's 11 years old hand me down splendor. Its 18 years old now and still with me, working like a charm.
I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being always by my side and my fingers; I could always count on them.

                      Re: The First Ride!

                      Well,

it was the year 2001.. I was in New York doing my 7th Grade (std) as they call it.. I was a cute and chubby kid my dad sent my brother to Madurai (my aunt house) to do his 9th std in 1998 as he was to get transferred back to India in 2000 (which got delayed to 2002 after a few months) and getting admissions in India during 10th which is a public exam..

so my brother completed his 10th std in 2001 and moving to 11th std.. me and my mom came to India to visit him and help him get a house where he and my grandma can help him with studies and food..

One of our family friend from Chennai had moved to Madurai and somehow they got in touch with us.. their son had a TVS Champ Blue color (will never forget).. he was taking me for ride and I was quite excited about it.. he asked me if I wanted to ride and I said yes yes.. he taught me how to ride and i learnt in a matter of few minutes.. I had to pedal start the TVS champ and it went great

I was on cloud after riding that puny little moped

and after a month, my neighbor had a Bajaj m80 2 stroke..

One night, the uncle (as I called him) came back from work and parked his m80 outside the gate.. everyone in my house were playing cards so I asked that uncle if I can borrow the keys as I want to ride the moped.. he asked me "Do you know how to ride?" I said "Yes"

he lent me the keys.. (I have seen guys ride geared bikes) the ignition is on the side.. I inserted the key into the ignition and turned on the moped.. i sat on it like everyone else did (no practical riding experience on a geared vehicle) kicked the bike and it didn't start.. kicked it again and the engine roared to life.. i gave acceleration like the way I have seen the other do.. then i let go of the throttle and the engine idled.. then I remembered people holding the left side lever and turn the gear to 1 and so I did the same.. then i recollected how people leave the left side lever and the bike moves and I did the same.. the moped gave a jerk and stopped.. I kick started it again, gave acceleration, left the throttle, pulled the left side lever, shifted up and left the lever again.. another jerk and it stopped..

Then i thought for a second to see what I was doing wrong.. then i remembered how the TVS champ moved, by giving the throttle.. and so this time I decided to do the same as before, except this time I wanted the moped to move without the jerking..

I kick started, gave some acceleration, pulled the lever, shifted up and let the clutch go slowly while giving acceleration.. acceleration wasn't enough and it stopped again but after moving a little.. so this gave me the confidence..

I kick started it again, gave full acceleration, pulled the lever (thinking to myself last time I didn't give proper acceleration, this time I will give enough for the moped to move) shifted up and let the clutch go fast while giving full acceleration.. and boooom.. there was an auto rickshaw parked in front of me. the m80 pulled off a wheelie and hit the auto rickshaw.. I fell down unhurt.. not much damage to the auto or the moped.. but that scared the shit out of me.. everyone came out and my mom started crying.. i was so scared, I didn't open my mouth. I just went inside and slept

That's me standing and this is the m80 that I crashed ..

ever since that Incident, i didn't want to ride a geared bike.. my bro the same year got a hero honda splendor after i went back to New York and the next year was my turn to move back to India.. my dad insisted me on getting a geared bike and I kept saying no.. I don't want it.. I want only a TVS Champ.. please get me a Champ

my bro tried to convince me to getting a TVS XL Super and even then I said no and the lamest excuse I gave was (didn't want them to know I was scared) "In case the tank gets empty, I can pedal the champ and get home and I can't do that with a geared bike" later decided not to get anything though..

I learnt to ride the splendor later when i was in 9th std in madurai

                        Re: The First Ride!

Lovely thread ...who doesn't want to go down the memory lane to that scariest of moments. Let me share mine.

It was when I was in class 9. My friends came to school and tutions by bikes and I was jealous of them wondering when would the day arrive when I would ride one. One fine day, I asked my freind if he would allow me to ride his bike. He knew that I didn't know how to ride but being a very close freind he allowed me to ride. He gave me a quick lesson how to ride. Clutch in - engage gear - clutch out and accelarator on. It sounded so damn easy. I climbed on to the bike(the owner of the bike was sitting pillion), ignition on, clutch in...1st gear engaged but the bike did not move. My freind asked me roll the throttle which I did but still the bike did not move. The reason was I was still holding the clutch. My freind asked to release the clutch which I did and the bike jumped due to the amount of throttle given. I controlled the bike with great difficulty. It was too much of an embarrassment though my freind didn't say anything but I felt bad about it. I thought I wasn't fit to ride geared bikes. But another freind of mine had Hero Honda Street (clutchless, geared sccotrette). He encouraged me too ride it. After a few initial hiccups, I was able to rde it and as kept on riding it, my confidence kept on building.
